Some great posts here tonight concerning marginal situations - great for learning. I think it's a fascinating event, maybe the cold air is not completely done yet?
Sometimes the vertical depth of cold air and the inversion of above freezing temperatures will be near the cusps of a change in precipitation type. This produces a wintry mix, precipitation type changes from one type to another or even sleet, snow, and cold rain all falling at the same time. Evaporative cooling also plays a key role. Monitor the wet bulb temperatures from the surface to the top of the inversion to monitor possible changes in precipitation type (if wet bulb is at or below freezing at all levels, precipitation type will eventually change to all snow, until or unless warm air advection again changes it back to another type.

yep, here we go rain has got heavier and I'm getting sleety blobs .....come to Mummy
-
Rain here but oddly it's not melting the snow...Temp and DP have risen...
Temperature 2.0 °C Dew Point 1.0 °C
I guess we just need it to get heavier now and see if we can get some evaporative cooling but it's unlikely to settle on the roads etc now as everything is wet, the grit that was down will have washed away though so if temperatures drop now it could be lethal!
NOTE: Weather station symbols are back to snow but it's still raining !

Just had a message from a friend in Sutton Coldfield (Midlands) and it's snowing heavily there
-
First ever post, although I've been following the chat for a while
Welcome NC74
Raining in the center of MK also, everything to the west seems to be rain as well. Unless you have height or evaperotive cooling takes place it appears it may be a bust for snow tonight. Temp here is 1'c and a dew point of 0.4'c appears to be rising too
Nothing here...not even rain !
Temperature 1.8 °C Dew Point 0.6 °C
My precipitation alarm has gone off but the weather stations symbols have changed from snow to rain

The warnings overlay is terrible, wheres the amber warning lol?
Amber Warning of Snow for London & South East England :
Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes valid from 0005 Sat 26 Jan to 0330 Sat 26 Jan
Amber Warning of Snow for East of England :
Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Luton, Essex, Norfolk & Suffolk
Valid from: 0005 on Sat 26 Jan 2013
Valid to: 0330 on Sat 26 Jan 2013
Snow will continue across parts of eastern England during the early hours of Saturday morning, although it may turn briefly to rain as it clears. Some heavy snowfall may occur, particularly towards the north of the Amber warning area, and across the Chilterns, where 5 to 10 cm of snowfall may accumulate in just 2 or 3 hours. The sleet and snow will ease, then clear before dawn.
The public should be prepared for some disruption, particularly to travel, within the affected area.

According to the radar there is an area of light snow towards the north of MK and over Northampton, anyone up there confirm that as it seems rather early unless some snow is breaking out ahead of the main front.
The social radar function on the netweather radar does have posts saying it's started snowing in Birmingham, so it could be correct.
That would explain why my 'rain alarm' has just gone off then....however my weather station is now showing sleet not the snow symbols like it was earlier

Amber Warning of Snow for East of England :
Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Bedford & Norfolk
Valid from: 1100 on Fri 25 Jan 2013
Valid to: 2359 on Fri 25 Jan 2013
Further snowfall will continue to spread from the west, as another weather front slides eastwards across the UK. Snow will be concentrated in Scotland on Friday afternoon, before extending to much of northern and central England during the evening, clearing towards midnight.
4 to 10 cm is likely quite widely within the amber warning area, with a low risk of more than 10 cm locally even on lower ground. Accumulations of 10 to 20 cm may occur in some upland areas of northern England and Scotland. Strong winds will also lead to drifting and blizzard-like conditions, particularly over higher level roads.
This update adjusts the boundaries of the amber warning area a little further west and south across the Midlands, and just intersecting the corner of northeast Wales near Wrecsam, as well as extending further northeast across Borders and Lothian.
