  1. I'm struggling to see where tonight's rainfall is going to arrive from...large lump of stuff heading NNE over Wales, and a couple of weenie ones passing over Normandy (Brest actually, ooh er missus) which could be heading our way. Quietish night ahead, for a change? Would suit me as I'm doing the Heathrow run tomorrow to reunite Max the Westie with his returning owners. He's lost a couple of kilos through longish daily walkies and the fact that the retrievers are on a semi-permanent diet to avoid problems with their joints and keep them near their target weight. Doesn't seem to work for me, regrettably. I blame the low calorie tonic water.
  2. That nasty lump of showers which has just left the Channel Islands looks to be heading for the far SE corner. We have missed most of the rain so far today, so I suppose it's only fair. The wind is definitely picking up too. Probably won't be here until close to midnight.
  3. Very wet. A reverse Kent streamer, coming ashore at Brighton / Eastbourne and heading North-east to the North Sea via Herne Bay. Lovely. I think I prefer the one in the other direction.
  4. It's overcast but dry here with some occasional gusty bits. Not too bad overall. Looks much nastier to the west on the radar. The more active blobs coming up the channel seem to be aiming for Dorset / Hampshire which will then take them to the west of London. Have a good and a safe day all.
  5. And we may need to keep an eye on Tamara who appears to have being freezing last year's snow. You can fool yourself, you can fool your friends, but you can't fool the NW legal adviser.
  6. Is that the stratospheric warming thing which drains the heat out, or have I got totally the wrong end of the stick (as usual - also confirmed by the dogs who wanted to continue their walk even when the heavens were about to open, again)?
  7. Looks like the extreme SE corner is missing the worst of it, for a change. Some squally showers but no hail or thunder so far. The sun's come out now, which has the unfortunate effect of making the dogs arrive mob-handed (mob-pawed?) and demand the walk they didn't have earlier. Trouble is, the woods are just filthily muddy, and the missus is getting most upset about constantly following them around with a mop.
  8. Happy New Year to all. Just started raining here but luckily I had time to take the doggies out and cut a few logs for the woodburner. Wind is picking up too. All in all an underwhelming start to the new year, but at least it can only get better.
  9. Not quite sure where the middle of the area is - we need to include the south coast from Brighton to Dover, plus as many Kentish northerners who want to play, and a bit of Surrey (sorry, you may have further to come). Anyway, something to think about in the New Year.
  10. We're well above SL so only have the wind to contend with, luckily, though the clay we're on is fully saturated. Bodiam flooded again, as usual. when the Rother expanded onto the flood plains. I think we get some of the aeroplane wind dynamics (Bernoulli? I while since I did physics) when SSW winds catch us as we're just downhill from the main part of the village. If you're still in the Firehills, that must be pretty exposed to the coastal winds with the added impetus of some height. No flooding, presumably, but some hefty breezes and electrical activity. We need a very south-east version of MK's get-togethers....quite a trip to anywhere north of Watford!. A Kent and Sussex version would be lovely
  11. A couple more trees came down in the woods behind us early yesterday morning. Annoyingly, we had not long paid to have them thinned out as they are spruce which were planted in the 70s/80s when there was a tax benefit for owning woodland, but nothing had been done with them since, leaving them too tall and too closely spaced. Certainly has cleared the area now. Enough wood to last us into the next decade I think, though we need to wait a couple of years to season the coniferous stuff to stop the chimney gluing up.
  12. Merry Christmas to all. That was certainly a fierce storm - lost 5 or 6 tall trees in the woodland at the back of us. Tried to get to a camping shop yesterday which is 5 miles from us as the power was out from about 2am onwards, but many roads were closed and even the open ones were flooding. Where the River Rother had burst its banks, the road was under 2ft of very fast flowing water. We abandoned the journey and went to the pub instead which has a generator. And beer. Our power came back on at 3pm and has (touch wood) been stable since. Heartfelt thanks to all the network engineers for what must have been a nightmare of a day.
  13. It's quite calm here now after yesterday's wind and rain, which cleared to blue skies at about 11am today, shortly after I'd finished taking the doggies out for a walk in the woods (they missed it yesterday because it was just too inclement). The poor Westie we're looking after for a few weeks while their owners are visiting family in America is not really white at all any more - I hope he doesn't mind being bathed. The retrievers just get their legs a bit muddy and wipe it off on the sofas and rugs, so that's OK then. Almost everything done for Christmas - just a quick Sainsbury's run early tomorrow and pick up the bird from the local butcher (though she's actually doing the shopping :oops). Mentioned that she should probably aim to get home by lunchtime, as it may get a bit breezy.
  14. Seems odd that London is getting more than us. We are just below the crest of a hill to the South of us though, so that may be sheltering the house. Any Westerlies tend to hit us, mind.
  15. It was rather breezy and rainy about an hour ago, but relatively calm now if still a bit damp - I'd be amazed if any of the gusts were above 30mph. I'm quite surprised as we're only 10 miles from the south coast. The raintoday radar suggests that we're about two thirds of the way through it. So, apart from the anticipated very muddy dogs in the morning, all relatively unscathed given the very large trees and saturated ground. Phew.
  16. Still a balmy 5.3C here. Hoping for a cold clear day tomorrow as the log-chopping was delayed a bit by trapping my little finger between a couple of ash logs getting their revenge. A&E was effective though, pleasingly. Entry to exit via X-ray and consultation a fairly impressive 2 hours. AS, I've not felt myself able to participate in the Mandela sanctification, despite growing up in the same era (I think I'm a few years older at 51). But everyone to their own. One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist, etc. Edit: You cant't leave, AS...we need you for your poetic rambllngs...the only person who even attempts to describe meh murk and make it sound OK.
  17. It's humbling to see how the east coasts were affected by the high tide and surge, and I was impressed by the emergency services, by local volunteers and by the beefed-up defences which finally seem to be doing the trick. It certainly could have been a lot worse. Too easy to overlook when inland - it was actually quite a nice day here, with the sun shining up until about 2pm, though it was cool with a start at 0.7c and only making it to 7c warmed by the strange yellow bright thing which has been absent for a while now. Snow still looks quite a way off, but a few cold bright days in store, hopefully.
  18. Quite a lot of orangey stuff inland from Hastings too - I can see the Romney marches etc getting flooded, but really surprised how far inland it goes. Hopefully, they're preparing everyone for the worst and it won't be as scary as projected.
  19. An evening in front of the fire with a glass of wine and music allows the mind to run free. I'm disappointed that you have already seen the potential drawbacks. Maybe in another few years you can reach my level of irresponsibility and then overlook the consequent unintended consequences. Because it's fun. Edit: Too many consequences, in more than one way. Oops,
  20. Working my way through the £120 of wine which came for (sort of) free from Tesco's after accumulating loads of clubcard vouchers, courtesy of ridiculously high utility bills. Nice set of savings....double your vouchers, 25% off for >6 bottles. Err, and 4.2C, just in case anybody's watching
  21. Luckily, AS has put another log on the fire and is currently resting his eyes, as the missus says when I tell her she's snoring.
  22. DAILY EXPRESS: HURRICANE HORROR TO HIT THE UK John Pike of Netweather (and Croydon) provided evidence that a huge hurricane will hit the UK next week. The 950mb low will hit Scotland on Friday and create winds somewhere between the pressure we have now and the Philippines typhoon. Asked to comment, legal whizz Abruzzi Spur said "pass me the Merlot and turn up the Floyd. Where do I send the bill?"
  23. Bound to snow as my beloved Frontera didn't make it past the MoT and has gone to diesel heaven. The family estate has 4WD in a rather low-profile tyre sort of a way, so is OK on slightly salted roads, but is rubbish on hills and going up the drive. Colder tonight...4.8C. Good omen for a cold sunny day tomorrow. My favourite. Apart from snow of course.
