  1. Some weather on the way here Thursday afternoon into Friday, 40-60cm of snow and blizzard conditions with 80kmh winds forecast. Not something I've ever witnessed before if it's as bad as they're thinking.
  2. Green green grass in St Johns at the moment, just some dirty snow piles left from a storm before Christmas. The East of the Island missed out on the snow from 2 recent storms this weekend one which bought alot of snow to parts of Nova Scotia. Looks like turning colder this week plenty of ice days and maybe chance of a decent snow storm.
  3. Big storm currently on the go around Montreal, warnings out for 25-50cm, looks intense on the radar.
  4. Had a storm over the weekend, widely 20-25cm in the St Johns area. Sort of come out of the blue as a 2 or 3 days before nothing really forecast then the day before looked liked 10-15cm though chance of it mixing with rain on the East coast so wasn't expecting much, then as it progressed warnings put out for 15-25cm with no mixing which turned out to be spot on. Those are the best ones with all the upgrades to surprise than see something bigger forecast a few days before only for it not to happen.
  5. I would say nice but not as you had to drive in it. Here still pretty snowless since the small storm towards end of November, some flurries since giving the odd dusting sometimes. Generally been cold though (for a Brit anyway) around or below freezing probably around the seasonal average with the odd mild day thrown in. This week looks another snow to rain system tonight/tomorrow (more rain than anything) bringing maybe 12 degrees tomorrow briefly before the cold is dragged back in for the rest of the week.
  6. Good link for Newfoundland webcams (if anyone is interested!), the whole island looks like it's had snow. http://www.stormpost.com/cams_nl.pl Mind, the St Johns ones are blanketed in fog half the time lol
  7. Impressive swings. It turned real stormy again last night, the rain went back to snow was very windy and snowed for a couple of hours, widespread power outages. Wasn't too bad here though only had a few cm's, the further west on the island faired much worse. We have a frigid few days on the cards then back to mild next week.
  8. I think they mean snow plows? Or are they the same thing. Pretty standard to clear snow. I must admit I was expecting it to be more than 12cm when i read the headline, we had around 15cm ourselves on Wednesday which is fairly common in November though was the only real snowfall all month, Novembers even Decembers here aren't that snowy compared to Jan/Feb. Continental climates are different though, deeper prolonged cold but not the snow volume but as it stays generally so cold with little snow melt so can build up that way even with smaller falls. Here we get alot of snow but milder interludes that can often clear away the snow....like the UK I suppose here just a bit more extreme and guarantees of plenty of snow.
  9. First real snowfall of the season here yesterday, looks around 10-15cm, the forecasters spot on. Not as big as the storm around the same time last November but was enough the roads were pretty bad for a time yesterday evening made worse with quite a few people not changed to winter tyres yet. Slightly milder today with a bit of rain about now so is all very slushy, will freeze tonight and stay that or below until Monday by the looks of things so all that slushy snow thats left going to be icy for a few days, might beable to break out the new sledge on the weekend if enough has stuck around after today!
  10. I call it the Moodel thread. Had our first dusting of snow this morning, quite slippy on untreated roads, you know just enough snow that gets compacted into ice always seems worse than when there's a few inches down. Looks like snow to rain tomorrow then back to snow as the cold air is dragged back in. The rest of the week then chilly with flurries, next week milder. Sort of thing you expect here at this stage of the year. The winter forecast for here has gone for above average temperatures and above average snowfall. I suppose it makes sense, I read the surrounding ocean is warmer than normal thanks to the warm spring/summer, more chance for battleground storms? These are what bring the biggest falls here with the right set ups.
  11. Impressive stuff. Looks more wintry here this week with first signs of some snowfall in the forecast, yesterday we had the big Santa Claus parade in the city temperatures pretty balmy for everyone that lined the streets! Wednesdays system looks like maybe snow to rain event though I've been trying my amatuer best to watch the models and it looks like the low pressure going to take a more southerly track which I think is better for the snow prospects here, think the track of this system is going to have an impact on cold prospects for the UK they've been going mad in the model thread recently!
  12. Around the same time we had the first storm last year, if it happens and makes it up here. In the immediate term it's wet, wet wet here, rainfall warnings out for 60-90mm of rain beginning last night until tomorrow morning. Turned much colder though from highs of 17 the last 2 days, the weekend looks much chillier with below freezing nights and daytime temps not much above, maybe winter is about to kick in a bit.
  13. I have only been here just over a year so last winter was my first taste, was pretty great coming from a pretty snow starved part of the UK. You do get used to it quickly, when you see 10cm forecast it's kind of nothing really, saw some pretty good storms in the 20-30cm range, I am still waiting to witness a big 45cm+ storm though most of the locals hate the snow so am not too vocal!
  14. A lot of snow is still pretty much guaranteed last winter was classed as good here and we still seen around 2.5 metres of snow, the average is something like 3.6m, a bad winter could see 7m. November and December aren't really known for a great deal of cold and snow, though last November we had 30cm storm (was a record for the month) and December was actually pretty cold with regular falls through out the month, Christmas Day was white with snow on Christmas Eve and a big freeze after think didn't get above minus 4 on the big day. Jan/Feb/March are seen as the best winter months for big snow storms, though last winter did disappoint a bit once we got past early February, after we had 4 storms in the space of a week in late Jan/early Feb which bought about a metre of snow in a week it turned very marginal here the track of the storms meant St Johns region was on the warmer/rainy side with areas further west in Newfoundland getting the snow. We did see a couple more storms in March and even last day of April but by then any snow soon vanishes once the sun comes out.
  15. I would have thought overall this year here is one of the warmest on record, Spring, Summer and Autumn continues to chuck in temperatures well above the norm: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/storm_watch_stories3&stormfile=Record-breaking_warmth_in_Atlantic_Canada__but_rain_on_the_way_for_Newfoundland_13_11_2012?ref=ccbox_weather_category1
  16. i do like a prolonged freeze up. Here it does seem you can get a lot of snow some winters(isn't St Johns the snowiest major city in Canada?) but like you say there are milder interludes which melts a lot of it. The weekend was colder here but back to mild and even sunny today clear blue skies, 16 degrees out feels almost like summer!
  17. 16 degrees here today, snow looks a long way off at the moment though looks like a chillier weekend coming up before mild again. Unlike last year I think we may be in for a quite a mild and snow free Nov/Dec, apparently this happened 2 years ago there was barely a flake in December before the heavens opened early January that winter and barely stopped till the end of March with metres of stuff and plenty of Nor'easters. Last winter gave regular smallish falls from end of Nov to early Feb then not much else really, a real lack of Nor'easters. Wonder what winter will bring though come March, last winter was my first winter here and by Newfie standards it was a good winter....by my English standards it was still a great deal of snow (must of been arounf 2.5 metres in total) and cold. I have yet to experience what would be classed as a bad winter here.
  18. Looks like bringing us alot of rain here tomorrow and Friday, up to 3 inches maybe. Rather it be snow though we'd be rather buried, the locals here don't agree with the crazy Brit!
  19. Barely had as much as frost yet and doesn't look like dipping below freezing over the next 2 weeks. Not that November is known for being too cold/snowy here. The UK has had colder snaps thus far this Autumn. Got rain and wind warning out for this morning, gusting a fair bit now,
  20. Still very un seasonly mild here, 15/16 degrees past couple of days, night time temps barely dipping below double digits and pretty fog free for a change, seen some sunshine! Looks like we might get a bit of rain from this much talked about Noreaster later in the week? Rain tomorrow too turning to snow up in Labrador,
  21. Utter devastation along much of the East Coast. Kinda glad (well not glad) the storm didn't take a more usual path up past the Maritimes and towards us, though had it done so probably wouldn't of evolved how it did. The weather here has been very stagnant over the past week, not that cold, a constant 6-10 degrees by day and night with a thick blanket of cloud/fog/drizzle almost 24/7 bar the odd few hours where it's tried to clear up, it's meant to brighten up later which will nice for the kiddies out for Halloween. Looks like getting wetter here into the weekend with what's left of Sandy moving through? Wonder what November will bring, starting to look for snow in the forecast now!
  22. Still getting some days of oddly warm weather: It was like a summer day in the fall yesterday in many parts of the island. In St. John's the mercury got up to 20.8 degrees, breaking the old record of an even 20 set back in 1970. It was warm this morning as well - 18 degrees at the airport at daybreak.
  23. St Johns since June has probably had one of it's best ever summers on record with not much rain and day after day of temps well into the 20's and by and large it's still continuing (the odd hurricane day aside!), all week dry with some sunshine and temps around 19-22 all week. Summer can be dire here most years apparently often never really arriving, I would say what the UK has been experiencing the last 4 months is more akin to what people normally get in a Newfoundland summer. I suppose come the winter we will pay for it though I'm expecting a bad winter this year.
  24. Tropical storm Leslie is edging nearer to Newfoundland, thankfully looks like it wont regain hurricane status now but still going to be very wet and windy!
