  1. Slushy morning here, was snowing heavy when went to bed, lots of yellows and reds on the radar, was expecting around 15cm at least of fresh snow with a little bit of rain this morning but must of turned to rain earlier than forecast. Some dissapointed kids (and adults judging by facebook comments!) waking up expecting a snow day lol, further west they seem to have got more in the way of snow. Not liking the look of Sunday with 7 degrees and 40mm of rain forecast, do some severe damage to the snow cover though it's about 2+ feet deep with the bottom foot like ice so may hang on although could do with getting rid of some to make some room for the next batch. Though looks like our run of cold and snow is over for the time being anyway
  2. I see interesting, makes sense as long as you can get the water drained away and not let it freeze up. Apparently we've seen 183cm so far this winter, lagging behing Terrace BC with 331cm: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/storm_watch_stories3&stormfile=Newfoundland_braces_for_another_powerful_storm_03_02_2012?ref=link_poll_thanks Got a warning out for a further 15-25cm overnight, sounds quite a quick intense storm heralding a milder coupleof days with rain on the cards for Sunday.
  3. Lol genius. It would certainly be easier to deal with the snow if it could be melted somehow then disposed of as water in drains, rivers etc, as we all know snow is around 10 to 1 times of greater volume than it's water equivalent. I suppose it would use way to much energy though. I know city centre area they come in overnight and load the snow onto trucks and tip it in the harbour, everywhere else though it's really building up everywhere else, haven't seen a sidewalk for weeks here and the roads are about 4 feet narrower each side. Everyones expecting the big council snow blowers to be around soon to start firing all the snow off the roads and sidewalks into gardens, was told if it gets really bad and they will also remove it completely with trucks but needs to be right bad for that.
  4. It was just over 10cm in the end from the weekends storm. Disappointing in the end considering 20-30cm was forecast and maybe more,it stuck around well into Sunday with the high winds, just not the snow. Though I think a good thing it wasn't too bad, we've had around a metre of snow since January 20th and are starting to run out of places to put it. Remaining cold and more in the forecast later this week.
  5. I'm not sure what happened but it wasn't that bad here, the winds were and still are high so some deeper drifts but the snow was always light I can't see we got much more than 10cm, 15cm max but be interested to see the official readings for different parts of the Avalon as perhaps the St Johns region escaped the worse this time.It was worse here Tuesday and Thursday I think, Tuesday especially much more intense colours on the radar where we got 21cm and also high winds. I had a feeling it would go like this, everyones been on about this storm all week and it doesn't live up to 3 so called minor storms the previous week which delivered more snow.
  6. Thanks Roger. Yeh doesn't sound too big a storm, they've issued a blizzard warning and about 20cm forecast though they've been wildly underestimating the snow amounts all week so I would think 30cm possible. Strong winds though so expect deep drifts and we've allready had about 60cm of snow since last Saturday on top of 26cm from the week before which only partially melted so beginning to really pile up!
  7. 17cm we got in the end, another one in the eye for the forecasters. I make that just under 60 cm of snow in the past 6 days and around 90cm the past 2 weeks, it's really piling up now, with more to come Saturday though they seem to be saying the worst of it will be out at sea maybe 10cm now though going by the forecasters track record this week that probably means a direct hit and 30+cm lol Edit, looking good now for a big storm:
  8. Stormy here again this morning, 3rd storm in 6 days .Environment Canada calling for 10cm so maybe not too bad though is blowing again but based on their track record these past few weeks at prediciting amounts it will end up more like 15cm+. Everyone seems to be hyping up (therefore probably end up being nothing and bypassing us!) a big storm for tomorrow night/Saturday which would make it a very snowy 7 days.
  9. Have to say it's pretty exciting here atm, though I guess there's always some kind of weather be it rain, snow, wind (often all 3 together) or caked in fog, then if you do get sunshine it's also greatyl appreciated. I think official snowfall amounts was 21cm for yesterday and 18cm on Saturday (had 26cm the weekend before) with up to a further 10cm forecast for tomorrow and there was talk of a big "weather bomb" snow storm on the weekend but still to early to say for sure.
  10. Around 20cm we got in the end, they always seem to under estimate it.The bulk of it fell in about 3 hours so pretty intense.
  11. Surely can't be long before it turns colder?, seems strange seeing such high winter temperatures in some parts of Canada. We are getting plenty of snow now though being greedy I'm still waiting for a monster 40-50cm storm, plenty of time for that though!. Last couple of hours is probably the stormiest I've seen it in my first winter here, not in terms of total amount, just very windy a blowing snow warning in effect and coming down pretty fast for a couple of hours, reports of lots of cars coming off the roads with plows unable to keep up.
  12. Expecting another 15cm here today following on from simular amount 3 days ago, snow in the forecast everyday it seems, maybe a bigger storm Fri/Sat. Winter really starting to pep up here now with highs well below freezing all week. What's it like in other parts of Canada, I was looking at Alberta and they're looking like getting highs of 4-6 degrees this week, must be well above average? Edit: A stormy lunchtime here, sat right under the heaviest precipitaion as the low began to pivot: http://s1260.photobu...31-13-10-15.mp4
  13. Interesting to see what develops! We've seen some a couple of reasonable snow storms here this past week or so, 25cm last friday and around 15cm here in St Johns this morning, I think further west of the island seen more snow from todays system around 25cm, Was pretty windy here though 100km/h gusts so made it all the worse, For the first time it doesn't look like there's anything mild or much rain in the next weeks forecast so maybe we're heading into a longer spell of snow on the ground with regular top ups, as you would expect as we head into February.
  14. Generally been a nice chilly but sunny few days here since the 25cm of snow on Friday. All change tomorrow again with another storm but this time a mild incursion 6 degrees and snow to rain (mostly rain 20-40mm, going to be a messy 24 hours). I guess that's the end of our snow cover again, well at least for a few days till the next batch comes along. It's been the theme all winter so far, in a way it's good as you don't end up with silly amounts of snow piled up with no where to put it. Not sure who much snow we've had thus far though I think it's well below average in these parts, though probably about 1.2+ metres more than I would of seen in the UK (which by the sounds of it have barely seen a drop and the mildest winter on record far).
  15. Environment Canada reporting around 20cm so far here in St Johns with a few more cm's before the system moves out, 25cm fallen further South of Avalon. It's the wind and drifting that captivates me lol looks like a white desert, and the plow has left a huge pile infront of the driveway got some shovelling (no snow blower ) to do so missus can get in the driveway later, can't wait till I see a 40/50cm storm http://cdn.nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.png
  16. Snow storm here this morning, not that great by Newfoundland standards but not something an Englishman sees very often! Very windy powder snow blowing horizontally, accumulations vary greatly from nothing to above the knees depending on where the wind can get at it, more like walking around in sand dunes out there lol
  17. Another mild day here yesterday, hit 9 degrees!! and very foggy which has just about melted any remaining snow piles though a few hang on. Almost like the weather gods are being kind to us in removing all the snow before giving us more to pile up as it's cooling down again now below freezing in preperation for around 15-20cm of snow tomorrow, biggest single dump since November if it goes as forecast:
  18. Hope so! Beginning to think my first winter here and we are going to go through the whole of January (and December) without any major snow storms. Since the 30cm one in November we haven't really seen anything major here, plenty of flurries giving the odd cm or 2 and several minor 10cm systems along with lots of milder days, nothing is sticking around. December has actually been better than January so far for snow which is unusual here. Snow in the forecast most days now but only small amounts atm.
  19. The weather is more up and down than tarts knickers here! Gone from highs of minus 10 Thursday and 15-20cm of snow cover to +6 now and everything looking green again, most of the snow cover has vanished overnight I thought it might hang on somewhat until the next freeze but no chance, must be the strong wind here it's a real snow killer? Basically a spring day here today, before it all changes again tomorrow and into Monday.
  20. Snow here this morning turning to freezing rain then rain later today. Going from minus 12 to 8 degrees in the space of about 20 hours! Wish I could see a prolonged freeze, sort of reminds me of the UK a bit with it's short 2 day Northerly topplers we keep getting, though is alot more snowy and colder in general here!
  21. Yeh I seen it on a Daily newspaper site, it's certainly being passed off as being from Austria but alot of the comments I read on the story were saying it wasn't genuine (from Austria anyway) so not sure. Amazing all the same, and the locals say they get alot of snow here nothiing compared to out there lol.
  22. Nice pic. Is beautifully snowy and sunny here today, and cold and crisp out minus 13 feels like minus 25. Had a couple more cm's over night and alot of blowing snow. Typically we've got a snow to rain event tomorrow so a short cold snap before something more prolonged next week?
  23. Is this pic from Austria? It's very dramatic but some people are saying it's not a recent pic from Austria but is from somewhere else (Tokyo? Do they even get that much snow lol)in the past. Amazing though what's happening over there, too much snow is a bad thing I suppose for a ski resort.
  24. Is winter about to really kick off for Canada? I read something about the jet stream beginning to weaken which will allow the colder air in from the North. Pretty wintry here with around 10-15cm this morning, heralding a short cold snap with highs of about minus 10 tomorrow, then we seem to be forecast another 10cm of snow Friday but with that comes in some milder air behind it and a milder couple of days with 6 degrees forecast for Saturday so goodbye alot of this snow, Then like you say into next week it gets much colder again with highs well below freezing.
  25. Snow here this morning as forecast the other day, windy blowing snow, pretty stormy out though looks like the worst is forecast to stay out at sea so not the big storm direct hit I was hoping for lol, we're forecast 10cm in Avalon with winds strengthening later on though I've seen conflicting forecasts with less forecast so will wait and see what we end up with later this afternoon when it's passed. Enough to shut all the schools in the region though according to the misses they shut at the merest hint of snow these days. Annoyingly the weather radar for Newfoundland seems to have been down all morning so have not been able to see the track of this system, I woke up this morning to check the radar with all this talk of snow and there was nothing showing, I thought at first they'd made a huge forecasting error till I looked out of the window seen the snow and it clicked the radar was bust!
