  1. I did wonder about that report as 80kmh shouldn't do that sort of damage! It's been cold here, below freezing since Saturday, had a few cm's Saturdays and flurries most days but generally blue skys and wall to wall sunshine. A bit milder from Friday with some mixed precip about, don't see any snow storms on the horizon yet? I suppose the fog will will start to roll in soon.
  2. 80kmh...sounds like a regular day here lol. Well not quite but how come it did so much damage to the power grid, is it not build to cope with a bit of wind? We only had a few minor problems with the storm last week with the storm which peaked at what around 100kmh and been far higher than that without any big problems...., a bigger problem here seems to be the stupidity of some trailer drivers who have too high a load on and end up ripping down power and telephone lines, seen several reports of that in recent months....witnessed the aftermath of one myself the driver didn't even realise till he'd driven about a quarter of a mile down the street ripping down about a dozen lines on the way, police everywhere, nice repair bill.....hate to have to explain that one to your boss!
  3. 10 degrees here now, big turnaround from Wednesdays blizzard that snow didn't last long! Very windy out though making it not quite as pleasant as it could be, warning of 110kmh gusts this afternoon. Then another cold snap beginning tonight below freezing till the middle of next week, little more snow on the way tomorrow. The up and down weather quite normal for March I guess. Edit: Looks like the peak temperature was around 13 degrees, some 5 degrees higher than they were forecasting, pretty warm for early March considering the average high is around 1 degrees.
  4. Nice pics, certainly the most picturesque type of snowfall more what am used to back in England (on the rare occasions it does snow not deep just an even blanket on everything). Most snow here tends to come with high winds, more so being right on the coast. Beautiful sunny day now but cold, short lived though with 2 milder days coming up tomorrow 5 or 6 degrees.
  5. So true!, back end of Jan/early Feb when we had those 4 storms in a week I think the first 3 they were forecasting around 10cm for each and we ended up with something like 26cm, 21cm and 18cm! They are saying over 20cm fallen now so maybe not too far out, the weather network were saying 20-30cm the past couple of days so would of been spot on had they not gone for 30-40cm at the last minute, they must of thought it looked stronger on the radar? It did take a long time to really fill in over North East Avalon. I've learnt in my first winter here with these blizzard type storms the snow only accumulates in deeper drifts in sheltered spots and depends on wind/location ,the side of our house/drive was waist deep in places yet next door neighbour had next to no snow on his drive. Edit: 25cm they're saying is the final total at the manned observation site at the airport, I say they (and Roger) called this one right.
  6. 9am and snow just about tapered off now though still pretty windy, totals right at the lower end of estimates think just touching 20cm here, certainly not the 30-40cm the weather network thought yesterday evening and Environment Canada were going with 30cm in total I know is hard predicting snowfall amounts but all winter they either under or over estimate it by quite a bit.. Was keeping an eye on the radar up till about midnight last night and it never really got going here till past midnight when initially we were forecast 5-10cm in 3 or 4 hours before midnight, the system was over us it just wasn't filling in early on.
  7. I think the St Johns 24 hour record snowfall is about 68cm April 1999, alot but thought might of been higher than that. Interesting to see what tonight brings, I see the weather network has upgraded it to 30-40cm now though believe it when I see it, will report back in the morning.
  8. Nice link, some amazing weather there, the ice storms look bad mainly due to their disruptive nature with over head cables...surprised they don't run more underground though I suppose the cost of that far outweighs the repair bill of a rare bad ice storm? Wonder what the list looks like beyond 1999? I was reading about White Juan that buried Nova Scotia in 2004 (not sure how much snow they seen here from it), a metre of snow from one storm in places like Halifax.
  9. Thanks Roger, the latest update from Environment Canada is about the same near 30cm for Eastern Avalon, less the further west you go, the winds look a big factor with gusts up to 120kmh and sustained 40-70, be deeper drifts. Not a huge storm by NL standards though potentially the worst of the whole season so far.
  10. Nice bit of snow, they've had around a foot in central/north eastern Newfoundland last 24hours, nothing to speak of here though just the freezing rain, looks like might be our turn tomorrow night just seen we've got a blizzard warning issued for 25cm snow (though given Environment Canadas track record at calling snow amounts on the Avalon this winter probably be either 5cm or 45cm lol), winter aint done yet! (though looks a bit milder towards the weekend)
  11. Well our 10cm of snow didn't happen, followed the same pattern as the last few storms, must of only been a dusting before turning to freezing rain....lots of that about this morning. Wonder what you think about tomorrow nights system here Roger, looks like it might be all snow here on the Avalon up to 20cm being called for, the system taking a different track you were refering to in an earlier post?. Be first time in a month if it is.
  12. At the end of the day no one controls the weather so you're just taking an interest in something that is going to happen regardless, of course can be a bit crass to wish for extreme events but still all the wishing in the world isn't going to make something happen. Mild here today after a cold week, 5 degrees looks like spring out but we have a bit of weather on the way tonight, nothing as scary as a tornado thankfully, 10-15cm snow before turning to prolonged freezing rain, will be some slippy roads about tomorrow morning if it goes as forecast.
  13. I know, the snow I seen forecast for early next week has gone, as I was expecting tbh I know it was too far out. Snow to rain not what I want to see, still hold some hope we might see a decent snowstorm before the end of March? Has there been a proper one all winter? There was one around the weekend of Halloween so way back in Autumn which delivered alot of snow (not here though) think people thought it was going to be a bad winter to follow? Our biggest single snowfall (30cm), was also back in Autumn towards the end of November, December was ok with regular smaller falls of 5-10cm but since then apart from a 2 week spell towards end of Jan/first 4 days in Feb nothing really in terms of snow.
  14. In the midst of probably the coldest snap all winter here, as we head into March and the 1st day of meterolgical Spring tomorrow may well be the coldest overnight and daytime highs we've seen from the previous 3 months. Is a gloriously sunny high pressure though, if you can walk with the Northerly wind behind you and the sun facing you it almost feels warm can really feel the sun now, till youturn around and walk into the wind is like a different world! Expected to warm up over the weekend back more average March temperatures with a system on Sunday bringing snow rain. Have seen a couple of sites forecasting us some more significant snow for around next Tuesday though I know is a long way off, anyone think the conditions here more favourable for snow next week?
  15. Nice bit of snow! We got a cold week in store for us anyway all week till Sunday, Northerly wind daytime highs of around minus 5 to minus 10, add another minus 10 top with the windchill, certainly one of the coldest snaps of the winter. Not really any snow in the forecast though besides flurries, really am wondering when or if the next big snow storm will happen, last one was Feb 2nd here!
  16. Not sure if this is allowed but as it's so quiet can anyone give their interpretations of the models for Newfoundland, specifically the Avalon peninsula over the coming weeks. I see you can usually see Newfoundland in the images people post but am useless at interpreting anything. I'm a Brit staying there if it counts for anything, we have become snow starved (like much of Canada this winter) over the past 3 weeks and everything is falling as mainly rain since early Feb in the Avalon now which is unusual here at this time year.
  17. Thanks Roger, this has been the story of the last few weeks in Avalon/St Johns area, snow to ice pellets to freezing rain or just all rain. A bit of slush about early this morning must of seens a couple of cm's over night before the rain. Central and Western Newfoundland has seen more snow from these systems, often it's the other way around, I guess this is all down to the tracks of the lows you are talking about. There has been plenty of precipitation about just not as snow. It's so bad now a winter activity centre in one of the parks that hires out skis and snowshoes has shut until further notice. I hope they see some more snow that allows them to reopen at least for a few weeks, though once you get into mid to late march time is running out for the very cold weather and any snow is likely to not stick around for too long. From Monday onwards it looks like turning chiller again though not sure what it means for our snow chances, greater than when it's +3 or 4 I guess!
  18. I wouldn't say let down, I didn't quite realise how snowy Newfoundland was, even in a "good" winter I still think we've seen over 2 metres in total (all be it in alot of smaller falls than big great storms so far) so far since November with I'm sure more to come, which compared to my part of England is something I wont ever see, aparently Nov/December was alot snowier this year than last winter (they had virtually no snow until mid January last winter but then the flood gates open right through to most of March) so it's balancing out a bit I suppose, it's never stuck around that long though I suppose that's a big difference here compared to parts of continental Canada. I do expect more snow in March though!
  19. I must admit when we were hit with the 4tth storm in a week at the end of Jan/ early Feb it was getting a bit tiresome clearing itthe 4th time! There's not really any snow here at the moment now, pretty remarkable I'm told for this time of year, literally is like a spring day out, sunny and 4 degrees (though back in England we would call that chilly, funny how quickly you get used to colder temps and feel like it's warm when it's 4 degrees!). Still got the piles around parking lots, edges of roads and driveways and some deeper sheltered pockets, all that stuff is like ice now, more rain tonight should wash away a bit more. What's March going to be like I wonder, everyones saying it's not the end of the snow as if it is it would be one of the best (or worst if you like snow) winters ever here. Our biggest single fall is still 30cm way back in November. Looks like turning colder here again from Monday though that seems no gaurantee of snow as we had the cold this week and didn't take long for the warm air to mix in and turn the snow to rain.
  20. Maybe I will bore of it once I've been here a few winters, though I have always enjoyed snow and cold weather, give me a walk on a crisp snowy day over a humid summers day. Summer here can be a blink and you miss it affair anyway. Once again though the overnight system hasn't produced what was initially forecast (10cm snow with a little bit of rain after), it changed to rain rapidly there was some very heavy rain coming down that has cleared any fresh snow that had fallen. I think more of the same tonight though they're forecasting basically all rain this time so given their track record in forecasting it will be all snow then ? I can wish lol.
  21. Bit of weather here tonight after a glorious chilly couple of days. Still sounds a bit marginal later though, 10cm or more of snow before changing to ice pellets through freezing rain and a bit of rain after maybe, last few times it's ended up turning to rain quicker than forecast, their is some pretty cold weather over us though so should stay more of a snow event hopefully?. Looks like the potential for more snow through Friday and Saturday but again very marginal, before turning colder again next week. Winter is far from done I think/hope
  22. Hard to answer but what do you think we will see Roger? The locals here are amazed at how basically snowless Feb has been since the storm on the 4th Feb (which failed to deliver much snow anyway), we've seen a few minor falls of several centimetres in the East here, further central and western areas have seen more snow, the 2 last big systems have basically been all rain events in the east giving us about 130mm of rain from 2 storms so the precipitation has been there but usually it's always snow events in Feb, they don't expect rain at this time of year so I think we've missed out on a couple of hefty dumpings of snow. We've got a colder few few days on the cards and maybe a bit of snow but looks like turning milder again from Thursday and further rain. Must say am a little disappointed with my first winter in NL though I hold out some hope for March? Maybe just being greedy though as compared to a English winter I've seen more snow in the previous few months than I've seen in the probably the previous 20 years.
  23. Yesterday morning when I went to the car there was a thin layer of freezing rain on it and was a touch slippy out but that's as bad as it got here, then just rained all day being reporting as 55mm fell in St Johns, on top of the 75mm Sunday....should be snow events at this time of year! though maybe too much to deal with if it was lol. Haven't seen any reports from the local Newfoundland media about bad freezing rain, though yesterday when I was checking the latest local conditions it was being shown as freezing rain falling quite often though wasn't any evidence outside in terms of ice forming on surfaces. Looks like conditions more favourable for snow here next week, maybe 10cm on Sunday.
  24. Whats the winter prospects looking like over the coming weeks for my area and other parts in general? Still looks well above average in many areas, we've got some snow in the forecast along with rain so pretty marginal, temperatures not really deviating much above or below freezing so not exactly cold or too mild though certainly above average.
  25. What a day yesterday, horizontal rain from start to finish. Water everywhere with 2 feet of snow cover and most of it melting, drains were more like fountains. If only it was snow I think we'd be digging out all day today so perhaps glad it wasn't. http://www.vocm.com/newsarticle.asp?mn=2&ID=20764
