  1. Interesting read: http://www.theweathe...ther_topstories We had around 1cm overnight so at least everything is white again and generally staying at or below freezing until the Friday with up to 15cm forecast over tue/wed so maybe a wintry few days on the cards, though I wont be holding my breath until I see it fall. Rain and milder forecast as we head into the weekend which has been typical of winter so far here ...some snow which lasts a few days then it's all gone, still waiting for these big storms in short succession the locals keep telling me about! Edit: Maybe I will get some of my wish Wednesday, potential for one of these Noreasters I hear about http://www.vocm.com/...=19906&latest=1
  2. Last night was a damp squib, literally. Woke up expecting some snow cover being forecast 5-10cm and was nothing, must of all been rain there's your marginality! Yesterday I was talking to one of the snow clearing contractors here, last year he was saying there was literally no snow through Nov/Dec and first half of January then it went crazy with something like 3.8 metres worth in 2 months and snowed every single day in February. They're crying out for it to kick off properly again, at least they did get some snow clearing business in Nov/Dec this time.
  3. I do remember reading something about it, interesting article. I know they can get some huge snow storms late in the season, apparently the record 24 hour snowfall for St Johns was in April 1999 about 68cm. We're forecast 5-10cm overnight before turning to rain for a while in the morning so more marginal stuff, the heavier stuff forecast for the weekend has typically disappeared from the forecast now as we get nearer to it.
  4. Yes it would appear so, the rain today is expected to lead to a few flurries over night as the temp drops and a much colder day tomorow with maybe 5cm of snow forecast, then rain is forecast again for friday and more snow forecast over the weekend. I would expect as we head into later January and February it to become less marginal and more likely more snow events? I know there will be some big snow storms often later in the season in April/May it's not uncommon, just being impatient I suppose want to try out my new snowpants I got for christmas lol.
  5. All green here again the remains of our new years day minor snow been washed away, lots of rain today. Think further west on the Island is seeing some significant snow accumulations (up to 35cm) from the low pressure currently over us. Still waiting for the next big storm, we had the 30cm in November but nothing that big since, would expect one to be round the corner soon.
  6. Nice one! The weather really played ball here, had the 10cm on the 23/24th followed by a cold high pressure taking over highs of around minus 8 the last 2 days, freezing all the snow on the trees etc a typical picture postcard scene and making it nice and crisp under foot, had a few flurries on the 25th just to add to the christmaseyness. And didn't even feel that cold either due to the complete lack of wind which is rare here. Looks like we have a milder couple of days on weds/thur though not much in the way of rain, and further snow forecast over the weekend.
  7. Well we got our white christmas, around 10cm max last night not as much as maybe anticipated we probably had more Tuesday when very little was forecast though that was gone by Thursday this at least looks like sticking around for a few days with below freezing temps on the cards till at least Wednesday. Not sure we will get anymore snow over the festive period but I suppose you never know. Merry Christmas everyone!
  8. Such is the nature of forecasting snow in advance...the boxing day snow has gone but todays snow has been upgraded to 10-15cm...that would be nice for christmas and not too much to cleanup!
  9. Yes it's been cold all week I think highs of below freezing since Sunday so a bit strange to see rain today, then back to tomorrow and into the weekend it gets cold again. I suppose the place is ideally situated to catch lots of preciptation, which will bring incursions of milder rain days like today especially in December...apparently the place didn't even see any snow until early January last winter. Tomorrow I'm not sure what snow we will get, says close to 5cm from flurries so may end up with nothing more than a dusting or be like Tuesday they said 2-4cm and it was over 10cm. Keeping an eye on what happens to the current heavier stuff forecast for late boxing day, will either downgrade/disappear or firm up.
  10. Rain here today doing a good job of washing away the snow, though I think/hope some will still remain when it eases off in a few hours. Further snow is forecast tomorrow (5cm) so hopefully this rain wont ruin my white christmas, looks like being a chilly but dry christmas eve and day with daytime highs of minus 3 and minus 7 on the day itself and looks like potentially another 25-30cm storm arriving late boxing day (though I know these things seems to change). I just love this place! Think last year in the UK I seen about 10cm from one fall in December and that was it all winter, was reading up on snowiest cities in Canada and looks like I'm in a good place (if you like snow): http://www.currentre...iest-cities.php
  11. We were forecast around 1-3cm yesterday afternoon and ended up getting 10cm in the space of about 3 hours, a nice surprise and shows how hard snowfall amounts are to predict? Even as the snow was falling the radio guy was still going with "2cm this afternoon from flurries", lol perhaps they should of looked out of the window! On top of the 5cm we had Sunday it's looking very christmasey thought a bit of a milder blip tomorrow (high of 6) with rain is going to get rid of some though I should think were pretty nailed on for a white christmas here now.
  12. Fresh snow in St Johns yesterday, nothing major about 5cm not as much as had thought it would be. Around 5cm forecast for tomorrow. Generally staying cold below freezing most days this week so good chance of a white christmas though looks like a milder day Thursday with rain forecase which wont help the snow though perhaps even more snow to come on the weekend, there was talk yesterday of a 30cm+ christmas eve storm but I've not seen it in the forecasts.
  13. I would say likely to be green anyway. Looks like they're having a brief flirt with some snow and cold this week and the press have gone into their usual "Day after tomorrow" reporting style over a dusting of snow, Gloucester has seen a dusting but only on the usual higher ground places in the County, no real snow to report on there. I was looking at the St Johns forecast for next week and it'slooking quite promising it will be a white chrimbo, after a brief mild and rainy interlude today it's back to colder and snowy from Sunday with 5-10cm forecast on 3 days from Sunday-Weds,maybe more beyond.Should at least stick around for chrimbo.
  14. Further down there's a table of stats covering more places, they don't seem to quite tally with the graphic...eg Calgary is said to have a 56% chance in the table and 47% in the graphic, so not sure what they've done there. It looks like anywhere outside of Vancouver and Victoria sees at least a 1 in 2 chance of a white one. Funny though in the UK the official meaning tends to be it's only a white christmas if snow falls on the day itself which was a bit odd last year as many places for the first time in a long time (first time I can remember lying snow on christmas for over 20+ years) had a few cm's or more of lying snow on christmas day but I don't think any fresh snow fell on the day.
  15. A few ice days here at present, some flurries yesterday giving a dusting and a chance of 2-4cm later today/tonight from heavier flurries. Nothing major (though would shut back home in southern England down, lol). I'm keeping an eye out for Fri-Monday which is currently being forecast a bit more in the way of precipitation around 25mm over those 4 days on my weatherpro app and all as snow with the cold staying around though here can often turn to rain. If it happens good chance of it sticking around to give us a white christmas, was reading this earlier showing what places are statstically likely to see a white one: http://www.theweathe...ther_topstories
  16. We had a couple of mild wet days wed/thur and was stormy/windy overnight (not a patch on what they got in Scotland by the sounds of things!). Much more of a chill in the air today is below freezing with the windchill and in general looking like cooling down here over the next week with snow on the cards again, I await the next big storm maybe in time for christmas, the foot of snow from the other week is long gone.
  17. Wet and windy, into December and 14 degrees...reminds me of home!
  18. The snow has all but melted here now, still got the dirty piles left over in front gardens and car parks and bits on the pavemments (or should I say sidewalks)from the clearance efforts. Though I imagine it will all be gone by the end of tomorrow with a high of 8 today and 14 tomorrow with rain, then it's back to highs of just above freezing into the weekend....that's how varied the weather can be here at this time of year, since the snow last week we've had flurries most days it's remained cold enough for that. I don't think its until we reach January/Feb do they generally see the snow stick around with regular top ups. White christmases are more common than in the UK though it's not gauranteed, they didn't have one last year like we did.
  19. The missus is from here. Cold, wet and windy is one way to sum it up! It's an island that gets plenty of rain, not too disimular to the UK really (much less people though the city of St Johns is quite busy, people are generally nice most of them originate from Ireland and the South West the accent is almost Irish) in some respects though experiences colder and snowier winters. Apparently was a November record, 29cm: http://www.vocm.com/newsarticle.asp?mn=2&id=18796&latest=1 I can see why the locals get sick of snow though, probably spent 2-3 hours yesterday digging out the drive and paths, the plow had been along early morning to clear the streets and shoved another line of snow about 2 feet high in front of the driveway which had to be shifted before you can get out. Can imagine it gets pretty bad when you get a few bad storms in the space of a few weeks, they run out of places to put the snow, when it gets too bad the council come along and load alot of it onto waggons with big snow blowers and dump it in the sea.
  20. I say had around 25-30cm, with 2 foot drifts and of course huge piles of snow everywhere now from the snow clearing. This time of year it wont stick around, meant to get milder into the weekend. Jan/Feb/March it tends to stick around with regular top ups from light snow and full blown storms.
  21. I will! I know how you feel, even when we had the cold December last year, my part of Glos missed out on all the fun with little more than 2 or 3 inches. I would say this is the most snow I have ever seen, I was around in the late 70's early 80's but too young to remember the snowfall back then. Where I am doesn't quite get the bitter very cold sustained very cold temps that they do on the continent but is a good location for lots of storms, still early in the season really though today was not that normal for here at this time of year.
  22. Apparently record November snowfall amounts today for St Johns, around 30cm I think, didn't seem that bad shovelling out considering something I'm not used to really in England!
  23. I woke this morning was around 10-15cm when I cleared the paths and dug out around the car, but is very windy so blowing snow with deeper drifts in places is about 2 feet deep on the veranda! Still snowing now the paths are covered again probably be an extra 10cm on top, meant to tail off in a couple of hours when will get out to start clearing it a bit, am awaiting the council to come down and clear the street with their plough and blower which is fired straight into gardens and driveways so been told not much point clearing it too much until they've done that! People still get out and about though the missus went to work though was a struggle, luckily managed to get winter tyres put on yesterday just in the nick of time!
  24. Am a Brit currently living abroad in St Johns, First big snowfall of the winter predicted tonight tomorrow (15-30cm), well I say big the locals don't see it as too big a storm!
  25. I'm not saying anything . Well ok just a little bit, how many times in the last 2 months has something been in the offing but just doesn't get close? This is what is must of felt like being a model watcher pre 2009? I only started taking an interest last winter, guess was spoilt up until the last 2 months! Seems like were doomed to a pretty uneventful February along with January, not sure the early March prospects look that great and after time is rapidly running out for any proper freeze up. I'm very a much a seasonal man, I love cold/snow and I love hot, just at the right times of year! Moving into March I shall be hoping for some nice sunny warm (well mid teens. ) When do we change to Spring discussions here by the old way (March 21st) or the new way?
