I remember one snow event from the mid 90s was decent. I was living in Denton and in the last year of primary school so must have been late 95 or early 96. I remember messing about with mates pushing each other out the door into the snowy yard. The snow was shin deep but unlike these days the schools stayed open! Now they shut for a couple of inches. Then we tried to play footy after school but the ball kept getting stuck in the snow
96/96 had some great falls in East Manchester

You're telling me. I'm nearly 60 and its never been any different! The classic snowy breakdowns are the worst. 10 minutes of snow then back to rain. Only 3 big falls in my lifetime and none from last nights type of event. I like our short but sharp snow showers off Irish Sea which I'm sure are happening more often now. 6 in last 3 years. Never leaves much though but pretty. When I was younger we could go 5 years sometimes with nothing. The 80s might have been cold but delivered little here. Anyone from Manchester that's says the winters were snowing then is rememering 79, 81 and I think 85. It was so cold in the 85 one but still turned to rain. I do remember though that the slush froze for about a week!!!
Interesting post.
I was born in 76 and lived in Stockport until 87 before moving to Mossley until my mid 20’s. I don’t remember 81 and in my infant years Snow was something I loved but we never got. Until one morning mid 80’s when I woke up to what was several inches for the walk to school. Spending my teenage years in Mossley was a different matter. Very little in the late 80’s but the 90’s delivered some beauties, even a Sunday morning in June we had a blanket of snow until the afternoon. Our weather is so extraordinary when it comes to unpredictability, places do have their own climate.

Where's our resident Geordie? Thought he said there would be no snow on low ground in our region? Looking at the reports from us on here he was wrong. I've said this before but he disappears when it happens
Low land England can’t get snow lying in March.
Just now, Frigid said:We had more snow during April 2021, though that month was exceptional. Glad many areas in the region had snow, especially the snow starved far west areas like Merseyside.
Yes I’m delighted the far west got some, shame it wasn’t earlier for them to enjoy the spectacle.

Well done mate.
Yesterday, whatever the outcome/frustrations, was a fascinating display of complex atmospheric physics in action.
Meteorologically fascinating if frustrating.
I’m hoping one of these days I do see a covering of snow in Manchester City centre, as it’s so so rare it will be all the more special.
I think we need a similar set up but in January, snow was falling just not sticking. Colder temps and the snow shield temperature rise would be negated.

50/50 on a snow day, I’ve been told to sit tight and await a decision.

Had a white out and the gritters just ruined it, must be bad at the top of this road now, very exposed.
Heavy snow here now.

Looking at the xcweather site winds are starting to have a northerly component now
Which is probably why the gap has gone and I have snow from the South feeding in on a little conveyor.

Well the heavy precipitation is close to the South of Manchester now. We still have snow here albeit wet and horizontal.
In the last two hours the showers we’ve had have been heavier and the ground does seem more conducive to sticking.
Im still hopeful.- 3

1001 ways for snow to fail in the north west, is a book we have all read.

Some bright echoes from that stuff crossing mid/north wales at the moment and for the moment at least, it’s heading in our direction.
hopefully no last minute changes in direction or loss of intensity and a decent dumping could be on the cards.
Those showers have smashed their way through Stoke. Now all that stands in their way are the Manchester snow shield and the warmer uppers being reported bringing rain.

Just passing Chester, the flow will switch with the pivot and miss us South.
