  1. As we approach the Equinox, the northern sky is remarkably bright up here throughout the night, as described earlier in the thread. To illustrate the point, here's a shot taken looking north at 00:30 this morning from outside a certain watering hole in the city centre, that I occasionally frequent...:
  2. UK Outlook for Friday 20 Jun 2008 to Sunday 29 Jun 2008: Rather showery on Friday, especially in the east, but some sunny spells in the west. Cloud and outbreaks of rain on Saturday, the rain probably heavier and most persistent in the north and west. Drier and brighter towards the south and east, where it will become warm or very warm for a time. Remaining generally unsettled into the following week, especially across the north and west with showers or longer spells of rain at times and some strong winds. However, it will be more settled in the south and east with spells of sunshine, but some showers possible between the sunshine. At the moment, it looks as though Low pressure will continue to dominate the weather towards the end of the week. Temperatures generally near or a little below normal. 3. Not bad at all! Enjoyed it - somewhere in between a basic intruduction and intermediate understanding I'd say. Although I do remember it didn't explain how there is more one jet stream and how they interact etc. That must be for the advanced students! iplayer only works from UK ip addresses John. My techie mates on holiday in the US couldn't even trick it through setting-up dodgy UK ips from the States. Copyright you see.
  4. Welcome to the voting to select the best photos of April 2008. We're down to three finalists in the weather related photo competition and three in the non-weather category. Thanks to all those who voted in the first round. So, as always, there can be only one winner for each category This competition was for photos taken during March 2008. The winning shot in the weather related competition will form part of the 2009 netweather.tv Calendar. Voting will end at 21h00 on Saturday 14th June. First-round voting on the May 2008 Photo Comp will then begin straight after - to catch up! Voting is as simple as simply clicking in the poll for your favourite picture. These are the photos that made it through to the final round (in alphabetical order): WEATHER ES K9 A WM NON-WEATHER K9 B MB SK
  5. As a neutral observer - can I just point out that to argue as you do above that to use 100 years of data in the history of the earth is ridiculous, and then say 10 months worth of data shows a cooling trend is a bit shall we say, inconsistent?
  6. How embarrassing - we're running late on the final this month. Will get it sorted
  7. I wonder if tonight's ECM is a spanner in the works for this Outlook or a model blip best forgotten by all? Looking forward to seeing tomorrow's effort at lunchtime.
  8. Have been away for business overnight - to Fort William. So took a couple of photos from the A82 of the mountains at the Glencoe centre. So nice to be paid to drive through that scenery!
  9. Let's go for 14.1ºC. Solidly average.
  10. 'Superstitious Peasants' - I know a few of them! What a good read Mr D
  11. That's really interesting eddie - food for thought. I'll leave it til the end of next week
  12. That's all the photos entered into the April Photo Comp loaded into the Gallery - so let the voting begin! WEATHER PHOTO GALLERY NON-WEATHER PHOTOS Voting is easy. Simply have a look through the two galleries and decide on your five favourite photos from each - so that's TEN PHOTO CHOICES IN TOTAL. Then post your choices by replying in this thread. An example - if you like JC 1.jpg, simply list JC1 as one of your top five photos for each category (ten in total) in your post below. As you will notice the numbers of all the non-weather photos are prefixed with an 'N' - please quote this. If I have missed your photo and it's not in the gallery - please let me know. The most popular choices with then be entered into the final, which will be held later in the month, after this vote closes on Monday 26th May at 18h00. The winning 'weather' category entry will appear in the 2009 netweather.tv Calendar. You don't have to vote in both categories if you don't want to - or you can do up to five at at any time on different days - that's fine
  13. So massive conrgatulations to mac for winning the monthly photo comp WS [ 5 ] [18.52%] WB [ 9 ] [33.33%] MC [ 13 ] [48.15%] And to Gibli for winning the non-weather shot final GB [ 16 ] [59.26%] DS A [ 3 ] [11.11%] DS B [ 8 ] [29.63%]
  14. Thanks WM - that's a good resource I'll pin this too. (ooooo - it's already pinned, someone is being very efficient )
  15. It's been proper raining here all morning Mike! 150m visibility earlier, although now, finally at lunchtime the low cloud has lifted to about 200m. But grey is the word of the day - and a stunning 11ºC to go with it!
  16. lol J07. If you ever used Central Trains to get from Skeggy back to Nottingham - you'd be forgiven for thinking it was 150 miles!
  17. It's fantastic PP - sat on a bus heading west going from murkyness and fog to clear blue skies in literally 3 or 4 minutes. Watching the whispyness of the edge of the fog bank - and all in the centre of a city.
  18. The haar is common here. Living only 3 miles from the Firth of Forth, we've already had mornings of it in the last week - clearing around 11am. Whilst the city centre sits in fog at 10ºC, the airport inland by only another 5 or 6 miles reports sunshine and 19ºC. I have even seen the east end of Princes Street around Waverley station stuck in 50m visibility fog - whilst the West End, around half a mile away behind the castle is in strong sunshine - such is the local nature of the effect of the haar - quite stunning B) As for its annual appearances, I noticed it was hardly a feature last year at all - but apart from that I can't remember a year when May/June hasn't been blighted by it in some way. And this year seems to be back to business as usual. Without any statistical analysis - but based on my own observations of the sea anomaly temps every couple of weeks - I don't think there has been a trend at all for the north sea to be sufficiently warmer than average to affect the weather in this way. Indeed it's bang on average atm. LINK (Interesting to hear northern English folk using the Scottish name 'Haar' - it was always called a 'sea fret' when I was young and growing up in Sheffield, holidaying in Cleethorpes and Skeggy B) )
  19. Only the second thunder of the season here - first was on Tuesday 29th April (forgot to report it then) and then about an hour ago - two very loud claps. Not seen any lightning yet though.
  20. lol - looks like a punk girl's legs with those stripey tights! Put it in the May thread btw. Tsk.

  22. No need to worry folks - we will have the final of the March competition first from tonight until the weekend, and I'll do the gallery and voting for the entries in this thread on Monday
  23. I'm glad you got those stats out Reef - as I too was thinking along the same lines as Richard. Now thinking about it, it was the chase to break the 30ºC barrier that was touch and go. And after previous years' summers it was a shock to the system for it to be such a struggle to reach it. Remember all those discussions about whether or not the London Weather Centre was a bona fide site? That was all tied up in the chase to 30ºC ps Will it snow here?
  24. <_< Well done Stu!! I'd have been there with you - *adopts Homer voice* mmmmm steak
