CME IMPACT: As predicted, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 9th. The impact was weaker than expected and failed to produce widespread geomagnetic storms. Nevertheless, some beautiful auroras have appeared around the Arctic Circle.
GROWING QUIET: Giant sunspot AR1944 has not unleashed a significant flare in more than 48 hours. The growing quiet, however, could be the calm between storms. AR1944 has an unstable 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class flares. http://www.spaceweather.com/

Reading Lorenzo's update in the stratt thread, the Polar Vortex looks like it's going to get another rattle soon which is good news.

The theme is still there, and still many small details will change so i would't get to hung up on them, especially past D5.

Yes Kayo, history tells us this time and time again, A very complex subject including lag times, the degree of activity, and also the fact that the sun has been very quite over the last few years for saying that we are at the peak Solar Cycle 24.
What i will say is, is that any immediate activity will have no effect on our weather.

It's sunspot 1944 that produced the CME Keith that is 7 times the size of Earth....

Was looking back over the threads from march last year with all the snow last night.....the hills around glossop did pretty well....my neighbour was saying the snow drifted over the hedges here and partially blocked the road i now live on..... Was feeling very much like i wanted some winter before going to sleep....hopefully something morewintery next week.... Your posts with derbyshire council etc were very interesting...bookmarked a few pages yesterday....
Yes some of the biggest drifts i have seen for years and years here, very unexpected... was snowed in for 5 days and drifts up to the bedroom windows. Pretty amazing and a Month i will never forget, i just wish all months were like that !

I find it amazing how fast some can post a new chart in the mod thread, if they were any faster they'd be posting it before it's out..
Some fantastic charts again, hopefully the detail will become a little clearer by the weekend.

Great program, will be watching tonight for sure. We need more of this on t.v to get the kids interested.

Absolutely SS, No point in comparing detail atm, as so much can happen in such a small space of time as we have seen overnight.

Are you saying "no need for a second bite" there Chio..? Do you think this first push is enough to bring something of note?
Maybe these are premature questions, but i like your confidence !

Fantastic wintry potential from the 00z runs..bitterly cold replaces bitter disappointment, only one thing left to say right now....BOOOOOOOM :-)
Yes Karl, It's nice to have that buzz back, it feels like we have been waiting an eternity !

Looks great for cold next week, looking at the charts has this got the scope to be prolonged cold????
Looks like it's not one that will last too long, plenty of time to change though...short cold is good after the start we've had...
I would not worry how long it will last, it's not here yet ! and once Europe has cooled the models will then get a clearer look on things. Like i said yesterday we are still waiting for the Atlantic to slow down, so lot's to happen in the real world yet, As LS, myself and others have stressed and is said year in year out, lets get the cold here first, at least that is a dead cert now !

Relatively quiet sunspot 1947 decided to give us a little departing gift before rotating onto the west limb. The active region produced an M3.6 solar flare.
Protons are sky high due to the X Flare yesterday...
