Using Mr_Data's formula to derive a Cleadon equivalent to the Manchester index, 2010/11 came out with a score of 116, which is about level with 1995/96 (117) which was the second highest of any winter going back to that of 1992/93. However, this is well down on where it stood at the end of December 2010 (193). 2009/10 (215) remains well out in front.
How is your Cleadon Snow events count doing so far?

The Winter had a classic cold spell in December and that is good enough for me. Here in Glasgow, we had a decent cold/snow spell in early January which was better than what we got from some of the winters in the past 10 years. Personally, I would have liked to have a consistently cold and snowy december rather than two prolonged spells and some cold spells in January and February (3-4 days) bringing large accumilations. For some, this winter may have overall been disapointing but for myself, it was one of the best winters I have ever experienced with the cold sell in December and decent snow in January which surpassed all snow events in some of the winters I have experienced before.

I am Going For:
March: Settle with occasional chills - Max Temps 16c
April: Showery with a brief cold spell. Quite warm in the middle of the month - Max Temps - 17-20c
May: Warm and Sunny First part with temps reaching 22-23c. The rest of the month is quite sunny with some thunderstorms - Max Temps 25c
June: Mostly a warm and sunny month. 30c in South Eastern England.
July: Dull, rainy and on the chilly side. Max temps 24c
August: Some Atlantic weather and thunderstorms though there will be decent warm days and sunny spells. MAX TEMPS 26C.
And a quick look at autumn and winter.
September: Quite sunny and pleasant to begin with though mid month I expect quite warm temperatures before the Atlantic intervenes. I also expect the first frosts. Max Temps 21c, min temps 1c
OctoberSome wet and windy periods followed by sunny and settle days. I expect a quite cold end to the month so it's a bit of a mixture. Max Temps - 19c, min temps - 2c
November: Foggy and quite dull to begin with and some Atlantic domination. I expect things to settle out and the first snowfalls from cold spell. Max Temps 16c, min temps -6c
December: Cold with some snow to begin with before things warm up slightly. I expect a severe cold spell to follow after mid month until the new year. Max Temps 11c, min temps -15c

If things develop in the right direction in the Models, hopefully a potent cold snap will round this winter off. I am content enough with having the best of the winter cramed into the end of November and most of December. I prefer to have cold weather in December because I tend to look forward to wintry weather around Christmas and it looks and feels its best during December when the nights draw in. I would have liked to have experienced two or three decent cold spells in and around January and February. Prior to the winter 2008/2009 and post 2005/2006 there were very little decent snowfalls. In January we had a spell where we had more lying snow than some of the dull winters in the last 8 years.

Very surprised to see you quoting the January's of the late 90's and early 00's in such high esteem with regard to snowfalls. From memory the Jans of 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 delivered very few snowfalls of any quality. Indeed Jan 2000 and 2002 I think were devoid of snowfall around north england. Jan 98 saw one brief snowfall on the 18th delivering a couple of inches and that was it. Jan 99 saw lots of high level snow but apart from some wintry showers around 9-12th I don't recall any snow. Jan 2001 saw some snowfalls in the middle week, I was in Stirling at the time, but again I don't remember any appreciable falls. Feb 2001 however delivered alot of heavy snow both early and late to eastern parts of Scotland and NE England, less so the west of Scotland.
Of the three winter months over the past 20 years, Jan has been the poorest in terms of delivering appreciable snowfalls for these parts it has to be said. Feb has delivered much more than Jan, and in recent years Dec unusually has become the star month.
Perhaps some of these snowfalls happened in February instead of January.
-
Favourite Snow events for each month:
January: I can't choose one particular event but my favourites occured around late nineties and early naughties and 2010
February: I remember an exceptional snow event in 2001. Feb 2009 was also decent
March: Without a doubt 2006. My largest snowfall
April: Snow showers in 2007
May: Snow showers in 2010
November: The great snowfall of 2010
December: December 2010 and 2009 had brilliant snowfalls though I have good memories of cold and good snowfall in 1999/2000 and 2001.

I'm not sure why he is going. I think it's to do with the Met Office. I quite liked his forecasts during cold spells (I guess he likes the cold weather). Sky Weather has replaced most of their forecasters with an incompanent lady who seems to have been taken off the street to do forecast.
-
I assume Scotland should have a half decent CET. If we can get a good cold spell in February, Scotland's Overall Winter CET should be pretty good.

What ever you do, don't say the winter is over. We have got more than two months of winter and I think we have had the biggest freeze of the winter as the rock landed in the pond (atlantic) sending waves of cold to our shores and throughout the winter ripples of cold weather will come to our shore. The models are suggesting the idea of high pressure which would keep temperatures on the cool side and some charts and synoptics are indicating either an easterly or for the high pressure to move westwards to allow nothern blocking and cold air to flood down from the Artirc. This winter ain't over. Even the great winters of the past have had mild spells. Besides, we have had a great winter already.

how do we find out if snow is repoted at the designated weather centres?peter
I think later in the day, the met office will publish something. Anyway, it has definatley snowed in Glasgow and Edinburgh and I would not be surprised to see it reach nothern England.
It looks like snow has been reported in Castlederg and Trawsgeod.
-
Just had a look outside and I found a fresh covering of snow on my car. With lying snow and falling snow it's another white christmas.
-
Well it was only a few days ago and it looked increasingly unlikely for a white christmas and here we are on Christmas Eve with a further 10 cm of snow expected for Western Scotland on the Big Day before spreading south eastwards (maybe reaching the north of England). You can post if it has been snowing in your location or the troubles lying snow has caused.
It looks like many areas will see lying snow on Xmas morning but that would not count as a white christmas (personally I believe lying snow and/or falling snow is a white christmas).
Merry Christmas.
-
0.1c but will probably be changed nearer to January.
That's very low. For that to happen you would need a very potent cold spell. If that were to happen we would have a classic winter on the cards.
-
Just thought I would start this. I've heard over in the Weather Outlook that Nothern Blocking could happen again in January. I'm going for a cold month but nothing spectacular.

Very interesting. I wounder what caused it.

I think Positive Weather Solutions are insane for saying a White Christmas is certain. I bet it won't happen and instead everywhere in the UK has a green christmas, gale force winds, pouring with rain and 8c temperatures. By the looks of things, the Atlantic will arrive on the 23rd. Unless high pressure holds on or a Scandi high develops, I see this being a disaster for PWS. Also, the gullible newspapers think this blast will cover the whole UK. They also are more excited about this one than the last blast. I only think remote, exposed areas of the UK will get any lying snow on Christmas Day. I doubt it that it will be a Widespread event and even here in Glasgow I feel I might miss out on this one. Perhaps we might get more snow when the Atlantic arrives and melts it all again.
-
I think there is a good chance of a white christmas. The models underestimate cold, so I expect the cold to last past christmas.
-
It looks like today, the Big Freeze has come to an end across the United Kingdom. With more than two weeks of excitement with watching radar and lamposts and checking temperatures nationwide, this snow/severe winter event has certainly been memroable. For snowfall and even temperature for my location, this cold snap has probably beaten last years, however having lying snow with the clear skies during the Christmas and New Year period was perfect.
The first snowfall which fell in my area came on Friday the 26th November and what a snowfall it was. It brought 5-10cm of lying snow, however it was one of the best blizzards I have ever seen (almost on the same level as those in the early 00s and late 90s). Easterlies consistently brought snowfall right up to Wednesday/Thursday the 1st/2nd of December. A totall of 15 days of lying snow and 11 days of falling snowfall. Maximum snow depth was 25cm between Monday 6th December and Thursday the 8th. Lowest minimum was about -14/-15c on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
So in terms of snowfall, how has the period been for you and where does it rank.
For me, I have many favourite snow event; some short lived, some not, however this year's big freeze and December and January last year would top the table. March 2006 was the deepest snow event.
Temperature wise, this was colder than all of last winter.

Prior to the snow in Feb 2009, my favourite snow events and winter memories were from December 1999-Jan 2002. I have memories of Christmas Shopping in beefy snow showes, being stuck on the mate during a Blizzard wth snow depth over a foot, vertical snowfalls and plenty of other deep snowfalls. I can't quite remember exact dates, but I believe that this period was had some quite exceptional snowfalls tha even the past 3 winters have not quite surpassed.
http://www.personal....ther_dundee.htm, http://www.met.rdg.a.../diary1999.html, http://www.met.rdg.a.../diary2000.html, http://www.met.rdg.a.../diary2001.html are links which can show snow events.
I'd like to ask how where these winters in your region as I've heard many people say that this period was dull whereas in my opinion I have lost count of many deep snowfalls. Some dates that I can remember include 4 Dec 1999, Christmas - New Year 2000, 18 Feb 2000 though I have some real uncertainties with dates with snow in Dec 2001 and memories of heavy snowfalls between Dec 2000 and Feb 2001.
