  1. In terms of the mountains it's -0.5c at the Summit of CairnGorm. Wind still gusting over 70mph, left trouser leging it down in Aviemore apparently, webcams support that as does the radar, so blizzards on the Cairngorm Plateau seems likely!

Unfortunately something appears to have happened to the Vodafone mast on Meall a' Bhuachaille, as the mid station webcams and weather station went down offline about 4.30pm today, the system auto restarts at 6pm and it didn't come back online. Hopefully the Ptarmigan webcam from CML is working in the morning, you could only see the inside of a cloud when it stopped updating for the day today!

The above webcam is a zoomed in view of Braeriach from Mountain Spirit in Aviemore, if the cloud parts tomorrow morning there might be white tops! good.gif

Yes hopefully the summits of the mountains will be all white tommorow. It certainly has been a very autumnal and to an extent "wintry" day over the North.

I am quite interested to see how cold it gets in Aviemore and Altnaharra because snow could fall at quite low levels and perhaps some wintriness in the settlements of Strathspey.

  2. An incredibly cold day up in Altnaharra with temps failing to rise above 9c!.

With night time still to come perhaps there could be more in the way of sleet and snow in either Altnaharra or Aviemore that currently sits at 7c!

I'll check the met office observations tomorrow morning to see if snow has fallen up there.

Aviemore is still at 6.6c and many other places are at 7c. Temperatures should drop in the 4c region (or below) and there is still some preciptation in the region. I would say the Aviemore is still the best bet for snow during the night as the low pressure leaves Altnaharra and Aviemore is already at a distinctly chilly 6.6c. It really has been more of a November day up there rather than late August!

Autumn has well and truly begun and so has the snow season!

  3. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/he/altnaharra_latest_weather.html

Take a look at Altnaharra at 7pm. Sleet was reported!!!!!!!

If a single snow flake had fallen then we are looking at the first Snowfall of the Winter in any UK Town.

Last year I joined Netweather and posted about how the first snow arrived in Altnaharra on September 27th.

If it had snowed or a single wet flake had fallen then we should celebrate.

First Snow, First ramp for a cold and snow winter!

  4. Currently around 7c in many settlements in the Highlands. We may see temps drop below 3c and any shower in the area could bring snow down to quite low levels.

Keep an eye out for an outside bet of first settlement snowfall of the winter!

    6.6c in Aviemore at 8pm.

Hopefully below 3c or 2c by morning are really hopefully below freezing with a wee shower of snow!

From the Scotland Regional Discussion Thread:

Doctormog "I see that Altnaharra was reporting sleet at 7pm . Surely some mistake?"

If there was sleet in Altnaharra there would surely have to be some snow flakes. Therefore, if that's the case, we are looking at the first Snowfall of the Winter in Any Settlement on August 28th 2011.

Last year it was around September 27th when I started my first topic on how snow was reported in Altnaharra. There's still time to see if we do get a confirmed snowfall so fingers crossed for a definite First Snowfall of the Winter!

  5. I'd imagine some of it did - probably most, but W'lies can reach Falkirk after smashing the central belt aswell - perfect snow position.

Yes Falkirk is in quite a decent position for snow and better than my location. Not until the past three winters have we seen snow events smashing the central belt.

  6. Christmas Day 2010 started off bitterly cold here in Glasgow with temps sub -10c. However during the early hours an area of showers arrived and brought snow showers which dumped a few cm and also meant another white christmas. I remember spending some of my time in the morning watching radar and temperatures and couldn't help resist worrying over 6c temperatures in Tiree. Then came the showers and despite temperatures still below freezing, the precipitation fell as rain.

The thaw was on and I was no longer interested in the prospect of further snow as I travelled to see family in Argyll. I believe that the area of showers that initially brought snow to Scotland on Xmas Morning managed to raise upper temperatures and therefore cause a thaw. Considering temps had been below -4c for many, many day, for the temperature to rise to 0c to -2c seemed like the end of the Big Freeze.

My first question is, if that area of low pressure had never arrived in Scotland or failed to bring temperatures up, would we have seen an incredible battleground snowfall on Boxing Day with an incoming front meeting very cold air. If there had been a battleground snowfall, we would have experienced an extra 10-30cm of snow ontop of depths of 5-20cm. However, there are other factors that may influence the final outcome but I believe if the slushy breakdown event over Scotland had never happened, I believe conditions would be favourable for one helluva snowfall.

Although the Big Freeze had ended in Scotland on Boxing Day, some parts of England and Wales were still under pretty cold air. However, a forecast that warned of yet another battleground snowfall completely failed to materialise.

During the past two winters, we have seen incredible Big Freezes, however this historic events came to an unispiring end with a strange breakdown on January 13/14 2010 and Christmas 2010. During each of those cold spells, I hoped and expected a dramatic end to the cold spells. I was very surprised when the 2009/2010 big freeze came to uneventful end, however in December 2010 I really expected a dramatic end.

I'd like to know why our Big Freeze's never had a proper battleground snowfall and why so many promised battleground snowfall events came to nothing. It just makes you wonder how December 2010 would have ended and of course how long January 2010 would have lasted as the breakdown was not forecast at all and the Big Freeze was set to continue.

    Locations so Far...

North York Moors, Derbyshire, Scunny, Durham, South and South East Wales, Leeds, Dunbartonshire, Stafford and Cambridge.

It would be great if we can get some depths from NI, Scotland, Wales and other parts of England.

  12. There was at least two feet here last December, which resulted in many large span farm buildings suffering structural failure.

The unusual thing was relatively light winds allowing it to accumulate rather than more typically being periodically blown off structures.

It was the deepest snow I've ever seen here in 40 years.

I find it quite hard to imagine who communities would could with two feet of snow. With 20cm of snow here, we barely got out of our drive.

I think plenty of places got quite a bit of snow with the East of Scotland and North East England atleast 30cm and of course some snowfalls around December 19th dumped quite a bit over the South aswell as the Porlar Vortex that brought at least 30cm of snow across Northern Ireland. The snow that arrived here came from showers driven by an easterly wind, however parts of Southern Glasgow got larger amounts when winds changed to a North Easterly which saw very heavy snow showers miss our location just by a fraction. I would quite like to Do a Map of the Snow Netweather members had last year.

    So Far:

    4wd - North York Moors - 60cm+

    A Winter's Tale - Dunbartonshire - 25cm

  13. Simple Question.

But interesting to hear the answers.

It would be great if you could post the following:

    Snow Depth (e.g 5cm)

    Location (e.g Penzance, Cornwall)

    Date (e.g 19.12.10)

Extra Details (What type of snowfall, how long it stayed and the impact on the local area...)

My Highest Snow Depths for last winter was 25cm on the 6th December 2010 after a front stalled over the Central Belt of Scotland and dumped a further 10cm ontop of accumilations from previous snowfalls in Torrance, East Dunbartonshire, Central Scotland. Cars were just left in the snow all over the place.

Winter 2009/2010 highest snow depth was on the 20th December 2009 which saw low pressure out to the west bringing heavy snow showers and dumping more than 10cm of snow. There was some distruption but nothing compared to next year.

Highest Snow Depth ever occured here in Torrance on the 13th March 2006 with a battleground snowfall that dumped around 30cm. There was no traffic at all that day as the snowfall was forecast which meant people didn't go out and get caught. The snow melted quite a bit the next day.

  14. The December 2009 to Jan 2010 cold spell overall was more severe in terms of longevity....

    jannu.png

The spell started on the 17th of December and lasted till the 16th of January. Equating to a length of 31 days where temperatures were below-significantly below average.

Compare this to the November/December 2010 cold spell, which lasted for a relatively short period of time of 16 days.

    novemberdecember.png

December was split into two distinct cold spell, between the 10th-16th a milder spell occurred where temperatures never dropped below 1.c and maxes were up to 7.c (mostly below though).

This meant that the cold spell wasn't sustained enough, the first cold spell lasted 16 days vs the 2009/2010 cold spell which lasted a record breaking 31 days. While the second cold spell of December lasted 12/13 days.

Anyone know what the longest sustained cold spell is?

2009/2010 was great and snow cover lasted around a month. However, there were not much snowfalls, max depths of 10cm that turned to ice, plenty of milder spells with slight thaws. Min temp of -12c.

November 24th to December 9th was better in terms of snow with fantastic intesity of snow showers and max depths of 20-25cm. We had a min temp of -15c which beat the second spell although that spell was consistently colder.

The second spell certainly didn't live up to the last one in terms of snowfall, however it was pretty cold overall!

31 days of the cold of 2nd Severe Cold Spell of December and the intensity of the snowfall of Nov-Dec cold spell would be insane and the country would be in an uninmaginably attrocious state.

TEMPERATURES OF AVERAGE OR BELOW AND DAYS OF SNOW:

    November 20th: 8c, 3c

    November 21st: 6c, 3c

    November 22nd: 7c, 1c

Around 20 days of slightly below to well below average temperatures.

Now Let's Take a Look at the 2nd Spell:

    December 16th: 9c*, -3c, SNOW

    December 17th: 0c, -5c

    December 18th: 0c, -12c, SNOW

    December 19th: 0c, -12c, SNOW

Around 12 days plus the 20 days in the first spell is 32 days with below average temperatures. Some temps are pretty low with the Top 10 being:

    MAX, MIN

    -8C (DEC 7), -15C (DEC 2)

    -5C (DEC 22), -14C (DEC 23)

    -5C (DEC 21), -14C (DEC 7)

    -1C (DEC 1), -12C (DEC 19)

    0C (NOV 27), -10C (NOV 28)

In terms of cold, December 2010 was umbelievable and 25cm of snow certainly is up there in the top 3 snow depths of my life. I have never seen so many great snow showers before during the Nov-Dec cold spell.

    Let's Look at Dec 2009 - Jan 2010:

    January 14th: 2c,0c, SNOW

    29 DAYS.

Pretty Good, some pretty cold temperatures and sustained periods of lying snow. Overall, I will have to say Novemer/December 2010 was better though December 2009/January 2010 was exceptional aswell.

  15. I still can't quite believe that people are comparing Winter 2008/2009 to 2010/2011?

Earlier today I had a look at some of the reviews and weather events of the winter plus my own memory. Here is my Verdict.

October Snowfalls was a very decent start to the snow season in the South.

Late November and Early December Cold Spell - The first snowfall of my winter was hours before the end of November. I recall one snowfall in early December that was probably the first lying snow we had since 2006, albeit the snow was very icy and was barely 3cm. A failed Battleground snowfall kind of spoilt things.

December in generall was the coldest month for a while was some really low temps, a cold Christmas and cold end to the year.

January was pretty un eventful was a frustrating cold spell that failed to bring the snow. Any snowfalls only provided depths up to a cm.

Overall, January was also pretty cold but no that snowy.

Febuary was somewhat of an improvement with the best lying snow since March 2006 on the 2nd. However a low pressure system from the south failed to fall as snow and melt any accumilations. We would have to wait til the weekend to see the best snowfall since March 2006 with 10cm of lying snow lasting quite a while. One or two snowfalls followed.

Overall, Winter 2008/2009 was a major improvement from previous winters and it saw some pretty cold weather and there were more snowfalls than often, although snow depths were often restricted to dusting except in Febuary. Winter 2009/2010 would completely blow 2008/2009 away hands down. And to an extent the cold spell in November/December 2010 was more consistent and better overall than the Big Freeze of 2009/2010.

If this winter is mild overall with a repeat of a Feb 2009 at the least or preferably a December 2010 with January like a December 1999, I would be really, really happy. A few years ago, I would be happy if max temps dropped to 6c and I would be stunned by mind blowing temps of 2c. In all honesty, my perception of cold and snow has completely changed since 2009/2010 and particulary December 2010. I will no longer think -2c is cold and will be praying for the temps to go down!
