Anyway to my untrained eye, GEM and Ukmo still good in the short although both look flatter later next week and probably won’t engage the plume of really hot air to the south. Gfs is better than the 18Z last but it’s still nothing like the previous half dozen runs. Still the ensemble mean has made a marked recovery the mess that was the 18Z

Feels like we’re in that period where the pattern gets sorted out. Just like in June when initially the Friday to Monday looked especially hot, ended up being just the Friday with doubt over the Saturday up until 24hrs out. Wouldn’t be surprised to end up in a similar situation next weekend. Very brief plume, one very hot day maybe 35C before a rapid, messy not thundery breakdown.

    Let’s hope so

    Evening all

I'm going to disagree with a few of the more recent posters - there's been a significant shift toward the colder outcomes on tonight's 12Z suite compared to last evening's.

GEM is a thing of beauty if you want spring cold at T+168:

JMA is decent and ECM just about gets there. UKM is much slower and may not get there - the profile of the LP to the south is very different from GEM for example. GFS OP has a brief cold interlude but rapidly becomes very unsettled and wet with the jet tracking just to the south of the British Isles.

The main message is this benign spell of fine and warm weather isn't going to last and the next phase of spring is going to be more "interesting" in weather terms.

Interesting? As in cold and wet? I’ll stick with the benign

Bit blowy and wet here just outside Basingstoke but not expecting the strong winds until late morning/midday ish.

I was in Edinburgh a couple of months ago and took a quick day trip up to Glenshee- only a couple of hours and very scenic.

    Plenty of snow up there!

Hows it in Basingstoke? Not overly far from you and it is very very gusty here now... I think one gust that just went though was easily a top end 40s I fear the Thames Valley is going to act as one big wind tunnel!

I’m in Edinburgh for the weekend, woke up at 6am hoping to see a blizzard but just slushy mess and it’s now raining. Snow further north. Trying to convince the wife Perth is lovely for a day out.

Seems the BBC have sent their reporters to Cumbria, first time I've seen them actually take the weather and report on a storm for more than 5 minutes. Seems to be one of the main headlines right now, a small win for the weather community, a big shame that it took a massive red warned storm that could kill lives for it to happen.

Awful reporting, making out there’s going to be days of snow in Cumbria when the reality is it might snow on the hill for the next hour or so and that’s it

Odds are the train is still going to get hit by the 70-85mph region of wind on its way up through jone counties.

Given Scottish rail have now cancelled all services due to Dudley, I fully expect most if not all trains in the Amber zones to be cancelled, especially long distance ones.

    Cheers

LNER, who run trains out of Kings Cross, have already advised customers not to travel due to expected disruption on Friday. Trains often suffer during high wind events due to trees next to the lines and damage to the electric equipment.

Cheers for that, looks like we’ll be driving up.

-6C this morning, hard to see it getting any colder than this for the rest of the winter down here without a much colder airmass. Still this is a great spell of weather even for someone like me that dislikes the cold. I can handle a few frosty mornings if we are compensated with sunny day. Little change for the rest of the month looking at the models. Could be the most unremarkable January on record.

    -6 in Bournemouth? That’s exceptional
