  1. Just read this one from GP:

"Yes, the GWO takes a bit more work, but the rewards are potentially a whole lot greater !

We can use MJO forecasts to help us understand what the tropical component might be 'adding' to the GWO. At the moment the general trend is for the MJO to head into phase 4 (avoiding the +NAO phases 2/3), which couples us nicely with the GWO signal, extratropical and tropical signals as one. With the heat content in the middle part of the Equatorial Pacific really quite high, conditions are ripe for increased cloud cover and tropical forcing on both the western and central tropical Pacific.

This would be consistent with net addition of westerlies, and, in conjunction with previous westerly wind propagation, we should see the whole dynamical synoptic model driven towards the high AAM base state (MJO phases 4-5-6-7- 8 ), where mountain and frictional torques are generally positive. That gives us a reasonable signal for the next 2 weeks to be oscillating between phases 4 and 8 given that overall angular momentum has fallen but generally levelling off."

No I haven't got a clue either, but he's been pretty good so far this winter

    Excellent, all explained then! :D

  2. Exactly, I actually find it quite annoying that people slag off snow amounts in UK compared to America.

If your that bothered, then move!!

I haven't seen anyone slag off the amounts in the UK, it's just that if you are in this forum you clearly have an interest in snow, and as such a huge event is happening, it is perfectly natural for people to comment or be in awe of it.

Truth be told If i had the choice i'd pull my funding/tax payers money for the met office, I'd hate to think what they'd forecast if we had the type of event that the ne USA is having. Would probably forcast a chance of snow, then loads of people would've died

The current storm in America was from two systems colliding that had already formed. It was clear to see the systems and the track they would take. The situation in the UK is different as the LP system hasn't formed so it's impossible to say precisely where the snow/rain will fall, hence why there has been many changes in the forecasts for it and it will no doubt still throw up some more surprises. That's why the MetO have struggled to be more precise with the current forecast for this up and coming event. I don't think the MetO have done too badly this winter at all smile.png

  3. I wonder if we'll get scenes like this on Monday when we open our front doors rofl.gif

That's one serious snow storm they're having in the US! I do hope we get to see some snowflakes fall in the next couple of days, especially as it's so unpredictable at the moment. I think it's so much better to have this scenario whereby we are hoping rather than expecting, so much better than expecting only to see a downgrade and nothing!

  4. he's just great, reminds me of the crazy dutch bands of the seventies, I don't think he would be out of place in Focus or perhaps more appropriate Golden Earring - Radar Love! smile.png

I agree, DRW is fast becoming a legend and as much as Radar Love should be an anthem for us on here, we must accept that it is in actual fact.... Pants. Perhaps, we should come up with our own (totally weather related, region specific and on topic) song!

  5. Not being funny there is a warm sector crossing us in the SE as temps are marginal for snow it only means one thing!!

    Too much consumption of alcohol?

    Black pavements?

    Sledges left destitute in sheds?

NW forum members reduced to public humiliation as they snow dance?

Frankly, we, here in the SE are coping with it very well. YES, we were forecast a snowbomb, YES, we've watched it almost fizzle out before detonation... But.. And this is a BIG but.....

Us South Easterners, would rather have proper full fat snow than any potential awkward mix. And on that note I shall say goodnight and take residence on the 'step' for the duration.

... Oh, okay, we'd probably also celebrate a sighting of a flake.... Which may be followed up with pictures and a couple of whoops. (ok, I'm totally on the naughty step now, me and the naughty step are one)

  6. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself as a newbie!

been reading this and the model thread for a few weeks now and you guys in here seem a lot less scary to say hi to!!

I can't read the charts for toffee (im in the lampost watching club) but im trying to make sense of them and I really appreciate the posts which explain things in detail.

I'm in north Kent so I've got my fingers crossed with you guys for an exciting weekend!!

    Hi,

    Do you......

    1. Stare so hard into the garden sometimes that you start to see dots in front of your eyes and convince yourself it's snowing?
    2. Whoop with delight when a white feather floats down and catches your eye, only to then pretend that you were whooping about something else entirely as it clearly wasn't a snowflake?
    3. Flick from channel to channel watching the weather and only believe the one suggesting snow for your area?
    4. Stay up to silly hours (probably drinking) watching the snow fall in the light of a lamp post, blatantly refusing to go to bed for fear of missing one flake?
    5. Peep out of the curtains when snow is forecast but cover up your obsession to family and friends by making ridiculous excuses as to why you need to take more rubbish out/check the car/pop to the neighbours house etc?
    6. Head over to the model thread and ignore all of the negative posts but get excited about all the snowmaggeddon ones?
    7. Have more than one weather app on your mobile phone?
    8. Get more than just a little bit excited when anyone mentions pink blobs?
    9. Find yourself in the garden measuring snowfall and taking an unprecedented amount of pictures when it does settle?

If you can answer yes to any of these, you will find a strong family of like-minded people in here tease.gif

  7. A very awkward mix of hail and liquid snow...'Slurricane' anyone?

Add some cordial and you'd have a slush puppy!

...Well, without getting too technical on y'all, I'd have to say it's chuffin' cold here, that wind sure has a sting in it's tail.

I told my youngest daughter to keep her vest tucked in to stop the draughts getting in, she has just been on the phone to her nan telling her that she has to keep her vest tucked in because of the giraffes!

  8. A little tune to brighten up this dreary day......Beach Boys anyone?

Well South East girls are hip

I really dig their charming flair

And the Essex girls with the way they tan

Who needs the sun when you're down there?

The Kentish gardens daughters make the rain seem warm and light

And the Sussex girls are all snow obsessed

They watch the lampposts late at night

I wish they all could be South and Eastern

I wish they all could be South and Eastern

I wish they all could be South and Eastern girls

The South East coast has sunshine

But they'd trade it all for snow

If you threw in a blizzard, just for a laugh

The South and Eastern girls would glow.

I've been all round the UK

And I've seen all kinds of girls

    But there's never a place,

Who thinks an inch is just ace,

Like the South and Eastern belles

I wish they all could be South and Eastern

I wish they all could be South and Eastern

I wish they all could be South and Eastern girls
