If you spend too long in their you can easily become obsessed by computer model prediction to the point where you think computers generate weather rather than nature.
Well said!! I think you nailed it with that, however, I am partial to a bit of drama, so I do pop over to get my fix ;-)

Good pics of the waterspout! No rain here yet but it's getting very blustery. Just moved the bins as one got blown over.

Hmmm, 1987 I was a typical 13yr old and I slept through the whole thing. My dad woke me up in the morning with these immortal words I'll never forget, "I don't think there'll be any school today love, it was a bit windy last night"!!

I don't have any weather related equipment, but I've gotta say it feels warmer now than this afternoons bitterly cold school run!

As we're on a bit of a lull in here, I just thought I'd write a little something....
Firstly, whilst I have scored this winter (so far) fairly low on Paul S's scale, what it hasn't taken into account is the excitement factor. I'm just an enthusiast, so whilst I realise that the synoptics have been incredible, what has really made this winter so good is this forum.
The mods have all been incredible and YOU lot have been everything from informative, funny, cheerful, sarcastic to depressed and even argumentative (which I see mainly as passion) at times.
It's nice to have such a warm place to go to on a frosty day, somewhere to share my (some say irrational) love of snow and cold weather. A place where no one judges me, because you're all as nuts as I am (some of you more so......). You happily share your information, pictures and enthusiasm, and for that, I thank you!
And whilst I also appreciate this is a weather related thread, it's been nice to share some laughs and banter without getting shouted down for it.
I know we are currently awaiting some mild weather but I'm still intrigued to watch it unfold. Will the North get walloped? Will the snow make it to the South East? Will we have the heaviest snowfall that suddenly veers towards us without being forecast to? Will the rain be hammering on my window whilst the wind gusts? Who knows.....? But that is the beauty of our unpredictable British weather. This winter so far has thrown up so many surprises, I wonder how anyone doesn't have any interest in what will happen next.
So thank you to all of you for making me feel welcome, putting up with my inane questions and banter. I have been a member for a few yrs but it's really only this year that I have contributed (nonsense) to this London and SE thread. If there are any other lurkers out there (yeah, you know who you are....), I'd highly recommend you come and get involved and up the excitement factor of your winter (we still have plenty left).
A word of advice though, don't ask if it's going to snow IYBY (In Your Backyard) because that is what we have radars for. Read the fantastic posts from the experienced members and make the decision for yourself, because at the end of the day......no-one ever really knows for sure!
So bring on the wind and rain, bring on the mad change that we'll see unfold in the next 48hrs and keep smiling because who knows what we'll get next in this funny little corner we know and love as the South East.

I'm a bit torn over this imminent snow to rain event. As much as I love to see the snow fall, I'd be gutted if it's the best so far, only to have it washed away by the rain.
Then there will be the inevitable hope of the cold front pulling something out of the bag and giving the finger to the Atlantic air and the models.
I think I may keep the curtains drawn, stay away from the radar and drink copious amounts of vino instead!
I still don't think we've seen the last of what winter has to offer yet.

Having crept downstairs for a peaceful cuppa before I wake the kids (yes, it really is worth setting the alarm earlier for that sole reason), I can report some fresh snowfall in Haywards Heath. Probably between 1-2cms,even on the pathways from what I can see.
It looks very pretty.

I have been a snow fan since I was about 3 but it is only this last week I have really got into models, maps and all that, I am still learning the trade, still a weather apprentice so am bound to get things wrong at first, I bet TEITS, Steve Murr, John Pike, GP got things wrong in their first week too but didn't have a 10,000 audience to nitpick their mistakes, just their wives.
My somewhat wrong efforts are pure guesswork/opinion and plenty of enthusiasm, if I get things wrong so be it, better to get on a horse and fall off it a few times than be too scared to get on the horse in the first place
Well in that case I shall continue to read your posts with enthusiasm, admire your bravery and applaud you when you nail it :-)

Looks like several hours of heavy snow for some areas with that snow in Kent marching north west, it extends all the way out to Boulogne so if it doesn't burn out an area from Swanley to about Chertsey could well get many hours of snow heavy at times and significant falls IMHO
I'm actually trying to work out if you are deluded and actually believe all of your predictions or whether you are just trying to get a reaction.
Personally, your posts don't offend me but I'm curious about your motives.
I'd be over the moon if even any of your prophesising came true but there's more than just a fine line between wishful thinking and scientific fact.
Plus do spare a thought for the experienced guys on here who get barraged with questions about whether what you are saying is true. Maybe a few charts to back up your thoughts would be good?
Either way, you do make me chuckle :-)

Well we have some snow coming down in Haywards Heath, doesn't feel like it's gonna come to much and the radar seems a bit confused! Bitterly cold outside though so hopefully it's the start of a snowbomb.....

Btw Overall SE Score / Average from above is 5.80
I reckon you should come up with some sort of overall grade for this Paul for when all the scores are in and we have the final average. I'm sure it could be brought out each year to accompany the Murr scale!

Finally, a simple way for me to understand the weather.....

Synoptics - 7/10 Lots of interesting blobs, ranging from pale blue to purple surrounding us. Many interesting lines with little arrows that were sometimes close together. Coupled with some beautifully coloured charts of interesting pink snow blobs and a feeling of jubilation in the mod forum, I can only conclude that so far we've had some very exciting Synoptics that have an air of memorable winters past to them.
Snow - 4/10 well, this is tricky because whilst at its max I measured 14cm,it never really hoofed it down. I never stood at the windows crying with emotion at the sheer scale of the hammering we were getting. Plus what we've had was very short lived (imby). So for this reason, I am marking the snow down, with a view to upgrading it to a 10 in February!
Frost - 2/10 we have had very little frost to even bother mentioning. I gave it a 2 because we had a beautiful, picturesque (hoare?) frost one morning,but that was really it.
So that gives me a score of 4.33/10....... Room for improvement! Homework is to work on those purple and Blue blobs in the next few days,gather up your cold air flow and check your pockets for precipitation. If you can snowbomb this on my desk by February 5th, you may still get an A.

Oh the irony, THE IRONY!! Sob.... I have less snow this morning than yesterday after continuous heavy snow. When is Netweather going to draft in counsellers to deal with snow addiction and lack of snow depression? I feel it's a growing problem.....

Godamnit, who's dumb idea was it to cook a roast??!!? All my windows keep steaming up and I'm rushing backwards and forwards between wiping them with a cloth to watch the snow and checking on the roast veggies!
