A mirror image of yesterday here, albeit slightly less cold: early glorious sunshine has made way for overcast, slate-grey skies.
Current temp 3.7c

I think today will see a significant thaw, the sun is really strong now. We've still got plenty of snow here, my office overlooks a sports field and it is still totally covered bar the far corner.
We got down to -4.5c last night according to my local weather station.

It's all gone a bit dreary here. Dull overcast skies, biting wind, and no real snow flurries since mid-morning.

It stopped snowing here an hour or so ago, but hopefully some more will pep up in the afternoon. Last night, the Met Office forecast for Birmingham showed a 95% probability of Light Snow between midday and six in the evening.
Temp back up to 2.1c, DP -4.8c

The snow is now falling a little more heavily here, and even seems to be sticking to what I had assumed would be a slightly too warm ground.
Only small flakes, but nice to see nonetheless

lol in the last twenty minutes we have gone from quite warm sunshine to overcast grey skies and - yes! - some very light snow
The difference in warmth once the sun disappears behind the clouds is very striking.

Still sunny here in Solihull. It actually feels quite warm in the direct sunlight.
However, some dark clouds are gathering out east, and seem to be edging their way here.

Hazy sunshine here, and the temp is already 0.8c (DP -2.7c).
The radar looks impressive, but from an IMBY perspective I hope the snow showers slip a little further southwards as the day progresses.

And they look more organized and prolonged than just showery outbreaks...... IF ONLY
grrrrr they haven't changed direction all day. Fingers crossed we might catch something overnight though.

On the latest radar, just look at all those lovely juicy showers (presumably of snow) spreading across Scotland and Northern England from the North Sea.
Now if they could just edge southwards a little bit.........

Polar Maritime, keep these pics coming if you can. Genuinely amazing.
I haven't been following the model thread much today. What are the chances of further significant snow like on Friday?

That wind is absolutely howling at the moment.
Only a partial thaw so far here in the middle of Solihull. Temps have been hovering a couple of degrees or so above freezing all day, bar when we have had the occasional, fleeting burst of late-March sunshine.

There's always a chance!!!! with the north having showers tues into weds if theres a slight shift in wind direction
from an easterly to a northeasterly that will push them down into our path of the woods, but looking at things its going to be the north of the midlands that will catch them, but one to watch!!!!!!.
Yep, in my experience snow events can crop up at very short notice in this type of scenario.
As the old saying goes: "Get the cold in place first........."
The end of this week still looks interesting, although I have a slight suspicion it may end up sliding to our south - would love to be proven wrong. The models probably won't start firming up on Friday until tomorrow evening onwards.

Morning all
So what are the roads like this morning where you live? Here they are a strange mixture of lethal and perfectly clear.
Where the gritters haven't reached and where there isn't heavy traffic (i.e. in my cul-de-sac) the slush has frozen solid, and trying to drive on it was like driving on broken glass. The chap who lives opposite me has a slightly upwards incline to his driveway, but he couldn't get his car up it, wheels spinning all the time. I had to leave him to it in the end.
But the main roads were totally fine.

Good god that failed Easterly feels such a long time ago now. Lots of toys out of the pram when that failed, winter over lol
lol yes it was a pretty ugly atmosphere for a few days, wasn't it?
In fairness, I think this winter has more than redeemed itself now

kinda catching up with this thread, great pics, 21st Jan looks your deepest, today definitely my deepest since early 90's
January this year was mighty impressive, but 18th December 2010 remains the daddy of all snow events for this locale in recent times.
The biggest lesson I've learnt this winter, from our January event, is that hours of persistent light-to-moderate snowfall can be just as effective as one big dump lasting an hour or two. The January event was basically two days (Friday 18th and Sunday 20th) of constant, hour-after-hour moderate snowfall with only relatively small flakes. Ended up nearly rivaling Dec 2010 for depths!

It is unprescedented weather for March, and to think there is the risk of a repeat for Good Friday. With all the snow in January and now this, I won't be forgetting the start of 2013 in a hurry
For me, this snow event plus the guaranteed cold week ahead has tipped this winter from "good" to "classic" status.

A few photo's from around an hour ago showing the severe drifting here.. even if the lane was unblocked it would fill back up again within a few ours.
PM, once Spring does finally arrive and everything is in bloom, you should take pictures from those exact same spots so we can see a side-by-side comparison

At the moment I've got that rarest of combinations - sunshine and (light) snow at the same time!

I know we tend to concentrate on small amounts of snow causing excessively widespread disruption and then we get the usual complaints about the UK being awful at dealing with snow, but it must be pointed out that many train services have barely been delayed - for example the Manchester to Buxton line has been running smoothly amidst all the chaos. I'll be taking it tomorrow so that bodes well for me, it's just getting from Buxton to home!
Very good point Harve. One of the few bad things about cold, snowy spells is that it gives certain people - and the press in particular - an excuse to run the country down.
