Edit: Ah, Coleshill did infact record the highest temperature today - 18.7C - as confirmed on the Met Office site. Blimey, think that's the first time in the history of weather recording that Coleshill has been the warmest site in the country!
Take a bow, Coleshill. Quite an accolade when you think about it

The wind has picked up a bit now, temp is currently approx 17.0, although we managed 18.8 an hour or two ago

Quite gusty here Bish. Temp climbing slowly now at 15.4
It's amazing to think that, when all the snow was falling on Feb 4th, there was a lot of excited chatter on the forum about how the models were suggesting potent northerlies and easterlies for the rest of the month, potentially a sub-zero February etc.............now it feels like early May outside lol

The 'Wunderground' network of amateur weather stations are throwing up a few sperious recordings currently....eg Stourbridge 21C & Penkridge 22C...they must be well sheltered in direct sunshine for those figures to be possible....Looking around the region, 14C-17C are being widely recorded
Very interesting. Certainly here we have virtually clear blue skies and almost no wind at all. 18.4 now :o

I doubt it's quite that mild ^
Absolutely glorious day though thus far, very windy though, currently 14.5c here.
I know what you mean, but it's what my local weatherstation is showing: http://www.monkspathweather.org.uk

yep, nice & warm outside Bish......summer here we come!
We've shot up to 17.4 now, very impressive for this time of year. What's your temp AJ?
Although I'm a coldie, if it's going to be mild it might as well be properly mild rather than the grey dirge we had yesterday.

The temperature has already climbed to 15.9 here in Knowle. It seems to be much sunnier than had been originally forecast.
I wonder if we can pass 17.0 in the next couple of hours?

An absolutely fascinating thread. It's funny, I was thinking of asking the same question, but you bat me to it Andy!
The temperature differences for March 1965 are extraordinary.

My local weather station, Pitsford in Northants recorded a minimum temp last night of -12.4c at 07:30
WOW, amazing! We got down to -8.4 last night, which is just about the coldest so far this winter here, but we can't compete with -12.4

So the cold spell is just about at an end. It's been a good one although not a classic in this part of the Midlands. The snowfalls of Feb 2009, Jan 5th 2010 and particuarly Dec 18th 2010 were better here than Feb 4th 2012. I understand that's not the case in all of the Midlands though. Last Thursday night was obviously a massive let down, but every cold spell has come with one of them so I suppose we were due it!
What this cold spell has achieved is that it has stopped winter 2011/12 being a complete disaster. Things were looking really bleak last month. At least now this winter won't rank amongst the very worst. It's still been quite poor overall but certainly not at the depths of 89 or 98! Again, I understand that might not be the case for the whole of the Midlands. You lot at the end of the M54 really do deserve something very special in the last few weeks of winter.
There's still time for more this winter. I think we'll see another cold spell before February is done...and if not we'll see one in March. What I'm going to hope for now is not prolonged deep cold but one off, quick hitting but exceptional snow events! With convection starting to become more into play in the next few weeks, you never know!
An excellent summary Gord, my sentiments entirely. The cold since the start of the month plus the snow event last weekend (plenty of which is still on the ground here) has effectively "saved" this winter from being consigned to the dustbin, the rest of February/early March notwithstanding.
I guess I subconsciously rate a winter depending on whether it delivers at least one reasonable snow event. For example, I tend to regard the winter of 2006/07 as a good one, due to the snow in early Feb 2007, when in reality the winter as a whole was actually a pretty nondescript affair for these parts.

Lot's of low marks then, with most in the west of the region generally going for between 0/10 to 2/10. Predictably, those in the east were far more positive, although that was mostly down to the Northants posters - I think the highest I've seen was an 8/10.
What I find really shocking is how comparatively badly the Leicester area did overall. The pics that Andy posted this morning just about summed things up, just a light covering really. And yet, geographically speaking, Leicester and Northampton are not too far apart.

just remember people that for snow FI is T0
^^post of the day in my opinion.
Last night was a salutary lesson in disregarding whatever the models might be saying, and reverting to radar watching/now-casting/sticking-your-head-out-of-the-window etc....
Bish
-
So what are your marks out of ten for this event?
I'll give it 2/10, one point for the light dusting we eventually received during the early hours, and an extra point for at least avoiding hours of cold rain.

Has anybody noticed how, earlier this evening, the ppn had formed an enormous V-shape over the entire region? Almost like the weather was literally flicking a V sign at us lol
Bish
-
Is there still time for us to pull victory from the jaws of defeat? Anybody???
Bish
-
Ugh the ppn coming off the North Sea is already starting to disintegrate before it even reaches Yorkshire.
My local Met Office forecast states "Overcast with a chance of snow and rain showers, then snow after midnight" - not bloomin likely.
Bish
-
It's evaporating PPN Bish, nothing falling from the sky, I'm under it on radar
No, don't loose faith aj............trust me, I'm a Bishop, I know all about faith :winky:
Bish

Is it me or is there a slight chance of that precipitation pepping up again north of birmingham?? it looks as though it might???
Yes the gap in the ppn is starting to fill in, slightly north of Birmingham.

It would be Bish, 'because I'm in Knowle too! (Just off Purnells Way)
lol, that's not far from where I went to school all those years ago (Arden). I'm at the top of Wychwood Avenue, near to where the golf course is

Time to proclaim Northampton the Snow Capital of the UK? How times have changed!

Given up trying to predict this one! The radar shows Solihull firmly in the void, & yet all my weather apps, plus the MetO are still indicating heavy snow for me for the next few hours. It's just started snowing lightly (after raining all evening), so who knows what's coming along....!
Same here, just started snowing very lightly. I'm surprised, because the radar seems to have us very firmly in the dry zone.
Reports of snow in Birmingham (to our west) are very encouraging

you're looking in the wrong place dude!
Keep looking at the stuff off the yorkshire coast and it's direction of travel, it's almost straight southwesterly now!
I agree, it's the North Sea we need to be watching.

Sounds like the Northants posters have finally seen their luck change these past few days

It was certainly pretty cold when I was out in Solihull last night. According to the local weather station, the temp eventually dipped to just 0.7 in the early hours of the morning.
