My first post on here, Stiperstones, Shropshire Hills at 285 metres and the precipitation just started is.......RAIN.
Don't fret, it'll soon turn to snow. Keep the faith!

I've been with her since October and she doesn't even know i'm interested in the Weather I've kept it very much under wraps! I did mention I could read Weather models but she has no idea of my snow addiction! I might go to the loo a few times during the evening and come online on my phone to leave a post or 2 and check the radar Fingers crossed I get away with it!
You just need to sit her down, hold her by the hand and quietly explain that you intend to spend the evening online watching a bunch of pixels slowly working their way across a map.
If she doesn't understand, just grunt something about NAE, ajpoolshark, and ECM ensembles, and leave her to it

Her location is 94m ASL and mine is 75m ASL, could that extra 20 metres make all the difference? Nah probably not, but the higher you are the better chance you will have of it staying as snow!
lol the words of a true snow junkie!
In truth I think it's only really parts of the Black Country that can genuinely be classed as higher ground, until you get to the north of the region anyway. But every little helps

Excellent! According to the radar that rogue shower is coming my way so hopefully I will see my first snowflakes since Dec 2010
Eyes down look in people!
Yep, followed an hour or so later by us in Solihull. Looks like it's pepping up a bit as well

Snowing lightly in ludlow atm, slowly getting heavier
Yay, our first snow report from the region!

Awesome! The lowest recorded at my location since the Weather station has been up was -10.4 at 8:33am on Christmas day 2010 haha. Still -4.0c here at 9:45am! With a dew of -7.4c. Obviously as the PPN hits I expect temps to be around 0c and dew around -2 but I think a ground temp of -4c at around 10am with the sun shining is a very impressive feat for low ground in the Midlands with no snow cover.
Hi Andy. What sort of height elevation does Leicester have? Or is it too low to be a factor in most events?

Just seen the latest BBC news 24 forecast, and is it nme or did it look like a snow to rain event?
Yes, certainly for more western parts of the region anyway. That's pretty much been the expectation all along. But crucially, the forecasted period of rain seems to be getting shorter and shorter

What did you expect? Temperatures were always going to rise to close to freezing, or slightly above further west.
Still looking good for everyone in some shape or form, though.
Yes, absolutely. So long as it doesn't stray too far above zero when the initial front arrives. And the westwards push on the latest forecast is certainly encouraging

Wow the temperature has really shot up in the past hour. It was still -7.5 at half past eight this morning, now it's -3.8. To be expected though, as the cloud cover rolls in.
PS we eventually got down to -8.3 last night, coldest night since December 2010

What time can we expect the snow then roughly?
Late afternoon I believe. Probably an hour or so before it starts getting dark I should think, although the heavier stuff (if it arrives) won't be until the evening.

My weather station must be playing up a bit right now. Is it really -8.4c out there now!!!
Dewpoint at -11c!
Looking at XC weather suggests it may not be far off actually.
I'm down to -6.6 now, and still falling. DP is currently -9.6

A quick snowfall total maps based on the NAE
Thanks for the update Cheese Rice, very informative
Looks like I'm inside the green area, but very close to the orange zone. Just one more shift west..........

go for the snow mate similar to a peterson innings shows great potential but all over after 5 minutes
lol that's a brilliant analogy. Of course what we really want tomorrow evening is a Jonathan Trott-esque 10 hour humdinger.......

Looks like you're right in the firing line, NS. About time the Northants posters had a change of luck
For us further to the west, it looks like a period modest-to-heavy snow between 16:00 to mid-evening, followed by a briefish spell of rain. Ice could be a real problem on Sunday morning.

Anyone bothering with the 0z and a late night of sorts? I'll be up for the cricket at 5?
Blimey you're a glutton for punishment aren't you? If fretting about the snow doesn't get us, then another England batting collapse will

What temps are people currently recording? The colder the better tonight, helps entrench the cold for the big event tomorrow
Currently -4.1 here in Knowle, and falling fast

I'm really enjoying these "golden oldies" Mr Data, keep up the good work
Would you happen to have the forecast covering the massive overnight storms which swept up through the Midlands in early August of the same year? I recall it was during the time of the 2nd test vs South Africa (Aug 4th-8th 1994) at Headingley.

Is it me or did John Kettley sounded slightly emotional at the end?
Yes, definitely a slight wobble in his voice at the end. He probably felt under a lot of pressure, normally forecasts end with a cheery "bye bye for now" sort of line, but that would have come across as being a bit inappropriate in the circumstances.

Very spooky! I wonder what it could be?

Thanks for sharing the video Mr Data
So many happy memories of the summer of '95. I was 21yo at the time, and I remember what seemed to be day after day of endless sunshine and scorching temperatures, Brian Lara batting for hours on end, and of course the Battle of Britpop (well it seemed important at the time).
I worked near Edgbaston back then, so I used to catch a train to & from Birmingham every day. At the peak of the heatwave the evening trains kept overheating and breaking down as they left Moor Street............not a pleasant experience, stuck in a train carriage with no air-conditioning along with dozens of very sweaty fellow passengers.

Thank you for that explanation Lorenzo, very much appreciated. I have to say, I'm finding this thread absolutely fascinating reading

Thank you for the regular updates, Cyclonic. It's fascinating tracking the progress of the snow cover each winter - virtually the whole of Russia has some now!
Do we know if Scandinavia is likely to see any snow over the next ten days or so, just to get rid of the anomaly?

Currently -1.3 here near Solihull, with a DP of -5.9
Can somebody remind me, how far above zero can the temperature rise before snow becomes less likely? Not saying that it's likely to be an issue today, just wondering generally
