Definate shunt westwards on the last frame of this radar, if you look at where the place name Sunderland is, you'll see what I mean?
Yep, changes afoot methinks. Let's just hope the North Sea keeps the conveyer belt going all night

Hmmm..........the northern edge of the ppn seems to be losing some if it's intensity as well.
I always try to be optimistic, but I'm just starting to get that sinking feeling. We shall see, still plenty of time.

Yep, getting ready to right this one off I'm afraid for the W Midlands....PPN far too east and south, milder upper air has encroached to far into the midlands and PPN currently over the midlands is already showing signs of fizzling out.. can't see that mass over eastern parts and the north sea suddenly pivoting and spreading westwards ...hmm, and I'm the eternal optimist, but tonight is not our night I fear....and no I'm not a moaner, far from it, just making a call from the radar & current data observations & analysis
aj I'm holding you personally responsible for the success (or otherwise) of this event. For no other reason than it makes it easier for us to have a scapegoat

Why do all the forecasts still showing going across the midlands in to the s/west?
My (very basic) understanding is that the front will slow down as it crosses the region, pivot slightly and trundle south-westwards.

A bit annoyed to see a gap developing right in the middle of the ppn, with Solihull set to be slap bang in the middle of it !
On a more positive note, I think I'm just about detecting a gentle SSW shift in the flow, plus there still seems to be plenty more piling up in the North Sea

Not a great deal happening here. Dry. Temp at -0.5C down from a day time max of 0.2C
I'm jealous. Can't recall ever experiencing freezing rain.
I've had two experiences of it in my lifetime. Believe me, it's absolutely terrifying if you're out on the roads, the ground seems to turn to glass.

Nothing falling from the sky here in Knowle yet, not even rain. Temp is now approx 0.0, with a DP of -2.7

Deary deary me. Its all gone pear shaped for the West Midlands while the east gets the
most again! Raining here! Could be game over!
lol that's one of the funniest things I've read on here! The East Midlands have generally fared much worse than the West in recent years.....

We've been downgraded to light snow on the Met Office Website throughout the snow event while a little further W/SW in Solihull and East in Rugby, they will have a period of heavy snow. That's odd to say the least; with the large uncertainty about when the front will arrive, which direction it's going, and even whether it's going to be freezing rain or snow; it's all quite a little bizarre to be honest.
Looks like the whole event has been shifted further & further south and west in the past few hours. Presumably Solihull is still just about within the "sweet zone", although I'm sure Coventry is close enough to join in as well

Brightening up nicely here in Solihull... ((Grrr)
Yup, just enough to push the temp above freezing. Currently +0.5, although it seems to clouding over again now.

Charts continue to look good this morning. Almost there..........
Am I right in saying that this is likely to be a rain-to-snow event tonight?

That 18Z NAE model seems good mind you, Bish, I thought I saw on here he was banned
Can't say I'm surprised, he had an unhappy knack of winding people up on here.
Yep, the 18Z NAE looks very encouraging for the entire region. But I'll only believe it will snow when I actually see it falling from the sky.........

yeah, the southern areas, classic Ian Brown setup, 'no snow for Staffs' too far north
Whatever happened to Ian Brown? I haven't seen him post on here for yonks?

Hmmm, the BBC News24 forecast was certainly very bullish re the snow prospects for much of the Midlands. All seems very marginal to me; 50% chance of snow, 50% chance of "cold rain" methinks.
In situations like this it always pays to keep expectations low in my experience.

I have just hit -6C. Should surpass the -7.7C recorded last week.
I imagine you will get comfortably beyond that at some point in the next few hours
We got down to -8.3 in the early hours of Saturday morning, fingers crossed that should be broken as well. Now down to -5.3

-4.1 here in Knowle, dropping quite rapidly.

No, it was just well known event.
And a fascinating one at that. Thank you once again for sharing these clips with us, Mr Data

Yeah... that really annoyed me. I drove to stratford (about 40 mins away) and went from seeing a dusting to a foot of snow.
lol perhaps it was your posts I was remembering. I certainly recall somebody from Rugby getting distinctly irked on the forum that day (with very good reason).

When was the last time that the Midlands had such a decent snow event?
We had a gargantuan amount here in December 2010, about a week before Christmas. But I think that was a very localised event, I recall Rugby a few miles away reporting next to nothing the same day.
Feb 2007 for the region as a whole I should think?

Here's the youtube of our heavy snow!
Wow, that is some serious snow!
Thank you for sharing

In just one day, 2012 has already bettered 2011 here.
Very good point, Gord. Apart from whatever slithers of snow were left at the start of last January, 2011 was totally snowless for most Midlanders

Really huge coin-sized flakes still coming down now. TV reception very glitchy, which is always a tell-tale sign. Temp +0.4, DP 0.0
Bish
-
Still coming down pretty heavily here in Knowle, with some evil looking intense PPN heading this way to the NW of us - will it fall as snow or (freezing) rain I wonder?
Bish
-
Edging above zero now south and west of Brum, more marginal for a period.
Hi TonyH, does that mean we might see it become a little less marginal again later? It's getting a bit too close for comfort here, temp now +0.2, DP not far behind at -0.2

Seriously dude, you need to chill out a bit. It's just one of those things. We did well on Saturday didn't we? And there's still time for things to change later tonight.
