Aren't they just! I have only seen pictures but would love to see it for real.

I'm hoping for temperatures to drop in Manitoba over the next week as I'm off to Churchill to see the polar bears. Currently in Churchill it's 14oC at 1.30 pm today - I've just bought all my thermals, woolley gloves, ugg boots etc. Mind you, yesterday it only got to 4oC under fog. Looking at the charts it would appear to be turning colder but still above freezing for the next week or so. Would rather see the polar bears in the snow.

Haven't actually been quite to the North Pole but have come pretty close in Ny Alesund on Svalbard. Mainly weather stations there. Amazing place. Permafrost and tundra abound.

I saw a programme about the Churchill bears the other week... it was fascinating. Hope you have a wonderful time. Take a snood!

We're off to Canada in five weeks - going to Churchill in Manitoba - "the polar bear capital of the world". It's where the polar bears congregate waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze up so they can go off seal hunting. It's something I've always dreamt of doing and this year my dream is coming true. Bit of a trek to get there though as the only way in is by air. We fly from Heathrow to Toronto, stopover for 3 hours, then fly on to Winnipeg, stop over again overnight and then on to Manitoba in a twin prop jobbie. We should be able to get close up to the bears on the tundra buggy and hopefully see at least 30 - 40 bears a day. They even have a polar bear jail in Churchill for the "bad" bears. Gonna be very cold though - probably below freezing all day.

Well - whatever the Americans are flying these days. More to the point - I e-mailed the BGS via a link on their website and today I got "your e-mail was deleted without being read" automatic message. Charming lot - if they don't want you to contact them why bother to put addresses on their website.

No - we get quite a few of those around here from Tornados and F111s flying out to the bombing ranges on the wash and are quite used to them. They do make things rattle etc but you also hear them.

Believe me it's impossible. Know what they can sound like tho as I used to live in town. Definitely wasn't one of them. If you could see where I live (and no - that's not an invitation) you'd understand that it couldn't be. I guess that without any other evidence I might have to start worrying about subsidence

I looked at the British Geological Survey site - they have some graphs there - to be honest I'm not sure how to read them - but at three of their recording stations they showed more than just a straight line during that timeframe. I've e-mailed them to see if they can shed any light on it for me. Beginning to think it's me but I definitely heard the vibration and felt something.

From memory it started with Ratty starting a whole load of threads yesterday stating (in a nutshell) that global warming was not real but I think the plot was lost some time back. We then went on to debate how we could live on a planet with an atmosphere of 80% oxygen (unsure what the other 20% comprised) followed by ways of leaving the earth when the sun becomes a red giant, we're all living in biospheres and there are millions of gigantic plants outside the biospheres which will be annihilated when the rocket on which we leave the earth interacts with the 80% oxygen levels and on and on and on ad nauseum. Hope you find that a useful precis.

hence the need to ensure that when we leave the planet we take our spell checkers with us. Perhaps the mods should move this to the lounge where we can all have fun

This is totally surreal, I don't think I want to play anymore. It was fun for a while Ratty but come on admit that either:- a) You are a troll You are actually super-intelligent and this is a wind-up c) You are really 5 years old :lol: Answers on a postcard please.

So how would we build this "tunnel to the end of the atmosphere". Would be terribly difficult not to create any sparks whilst doing it. Come on RATTY - admit it - this is a wind up isn't it?

So not just biospheres but a whole adapted tunnel all the way to Jupiter? Are the tickets on sale yet?
