  1. :whistling: evening all .had about 15 mins of steady mod heavy rain about 20mins ago .im hoping that something interesting could brew up after say 1am sun morning . the front out to the west is starting to move in closer . i havent been active for a while ,a few problems .im just hoping for several overhead bolts plus some good flashes plus 25 mm rain in one hour , perhaps that will make up for jan and feb . cheers :drinks: legritter winscombe north somerset .
  2. :whistling: as an EX fellow of R M SOCIETY i am very interested in contrails . i wish i had kept a log of the times i have observed , sometimes a big proportion of the sky covered . i can remember about 4 yrs ago probably late spring just after dawn when the north american traffic starts to pass over , i counted aprox 25 30 contrails . i had just been star gazing , and i can vouch for the sky being completely clear . but what amazed me was after an hour or so these con trails spread out covering a big percentage of the sky , also what appeared like small clouds turrets and other shapes formed either above or mixed in with these contrails . odviously it all depends on upper level winds ,temp etc etc elevation of sun . but this would make a good and interesting study ,SO COUNT ME IN . I QUITE OFTEN SEE HIGH LEVEL JETS FLYING into THEIR OWN SHADOW WHEN THE SUN IS AT THE CORRECT ANGLE ,i am refering to the shadow of the contrail . i wonder if a jet making a DISTRAIL would affect things ,after all nature as produced that cloud , and along comes MR LONG HAUL AND BURNS A PATH THROUGH ALL THAT MOISTURE . all very interesting . regards LEGRITTER WINSCOMBE .
  3. :whistling: just had a look around different weather sites and yes it does look about 50 50 for a cold shot next week . fridays charts i think will give us a better idea .i wonder if someone can help me out on an astronomy question . i posted the question in one of the science forums last week , but it disapeared or was removed .please could someone tell me which forum to post it in .i will be back on line mid even . regards :yahoo:
  4. :whistling: what a mistaka to maka ,idid mean to say BREST , thanks BRISTLE BOY for pointing that one out . also thanks to WEATHER SHIP for posting that chart . still learning computer plus keyboard . it is good for our hobby to have all this information at our fingertips .i know i could reply to each poster personally but knowing my luck i will leave that untill im sure of what im doing . .fantastic sunset tonight ,watched the starlings heading back to their roost this afternoon ,heading about SOUTH OF SE , about a quarter of a mile due west of their flight path out this morning .i wonder how many will make it till tomorrow , anyhow thats nature .
  5. :whistling: morning all ,its looking interesting for next week .had a good look at the charts and its looking like some knife edge events , but at the moment they could be almost anywhere . the one im hoping for is a good old fashioned frontal event . 24hrs before front arrives , a nice halo around moon ,the following day wind picking up . snow arriving about 8pm ,the first 8 hrs we get 20cms at minus 1c . then 8hrs at 3cm an hour at minus 3 , but seriously feb 18 ,19th 1978 me and my Ist wife tried to travel from bristol to taunton on the sunday morn ,we turned back it was like a white hell ,that was a low moving s e ,from sw ireland to breast peninsula , the se wind tapped into some cold surface air over the continent .the rest of that winter and before was normal , of course the following winter 78 ,79 , was a beauty .dont give up , still time left .im of to weston to have a look at pier tomorrow , its supposed to be the best day of the week . regards legritter .:drinks:
  6. :whistling: i hope this winter does not just fizzle out , i am hoping for atleast a good frontal event ,15 cms snow at minus 2c , ave wind speed 40miles an hour ,over 8 hrs . to affect all of our region . :cold: still plenty of time left.still cold out now , dogs bowl frozen over , jack daws sat next to chimneys giving of heat ,my wifes garden nome all cracked up , 4 pots in garden all broke ,plastic watering can disinterated ,i will get told off for that thats the second one i,v ruined . looking at charts it could be interesting if that cold in higher latitudes pays us a visit ,regards legritter .
  7. :whistling: hi ,all .weather 5 ,7 days ahead could be on a knife edge .looking at different weather sites they all have a different angle on weekends weather. computer models still big differences every new output . a good plunge of cold air expected too the east of us . pressure expected to fall over med soon .at the moment if your a cold weather fan like me im going to keep my eyes to the south for a pres fa ll.had a slight frost this morning about 8 .15 .local gritters in the yard are on the move .just watching sun set over quantocks .theres a tiny bit of cumulus probably thrown up from bridgewater bay or bris chan ,iv watched out for the green flash on hundreds of occasions but never been lucky .iv seen the blue flash whilst out with my wife ,driving . i just tell her to slow down .anyhow i hope we all get our favourite weather over the coming weeks .
  8. :whistling: hi ,sat up in my damp summer house today .watched the birds feeding in the heavy rain .i expect they are making up for the leaner times of the past. our local perigrin was facing off with the ravens .just had a look at the charts out to 240 hrs there are possibilities , lets hope something comes for all of us .if anyone interested there are some good web cams over in yellow knife and lake winnipeg , you may occasionaly catch the local wildlife ,regards legritter ,winscombe.:yahoo:
  9. I was clearing away dead and damaged plants today at work although we had so many I needed a skip to to remove them and filled it twice over! Some other plants that may still die yet but need a few more weeks to see if they will come through. Some of them include hypericum's, pitosporums, deuzia, hibiscus and many more, some of which are very hardy but prolonged frozen periods kill evergreen plants like choisia ternata's especially because they dry out in windy condidions as plant cannot take up water from the frozen compost.
