I think it's just that the 'heat spikes' in recent summers have been found to be rather unpleasant for many (me included), albeit they have been short lived!  Summer 2018 was consistently warm/hot until August but was always pleasant as opposed to oppressive.

I think 2018 was unusual out of the period of years we are in now as most hot spells tend to be humid and hot as opposed to how it used to be a lot more in the past with longer lasting settled but dry type heat weather.

The very warm to hot long spell we had that year was an unusual dry heat type setup which we hardly ever get these day's. Personally though I am happy about this because although the more hot and humid weather is more unpleasant for personal comfort, It's still worth going through this discomfort to get the more thundery type weather that comes with the humid kind of heat.

I prefer the hazy thundery look to the sky and clouds that come with humid heat as well.

Hellfire?! Has the UK been moved to Death Valley or The Sahara?
Nothing too abnormal showing, a few seasonal, very warm days. Then likely followed by an Atlantic arctic plunge of grey, dreary, drizzly boredom to remind everyone it’s the UK.

    Exactly!

Personally I think its more hellish to have below average temps and wet and unseasonably windy weather at this time of year along with no interesting thundery type weather.

For instance I actually like unsettled and cool windy weather but at the right time of year (autumn for example). Plus windy weather causes less issues at the right time of year then if they occur during the summer as there are no leafs on the trees causing more drag and damage potential.

I'm bang in the middle of one of the yellow weather advisories issued by the Metro today.  So far, there has been a relentless, thick blanket of cloud persisting, preventing any surface heating occuring.  It feels on the cool side out too.

For my location, I do feel this cloud cover needs to disperse rather imminently if I'm to see any convective activity this afternoon/evening.

Same for my location as well.

Big let down last night as although there were a few distant flashes to our east after dark and a few rumbles it all stopped around midnight and the expected storms that were suppose to happen overnight just turned out to be rain and gusty winds.

And like you say I can't see these showers and thunderstorms happening later that the Met Office have predicted if the sky doesn't clear up.

Looking forward to the next plume potential, it's a case of ECM vs GFS/GEM. The former soon replaces next week's northerly muck with something from the south or SW that could turn thundery eventually, but the latter is interested in keeping the northerly muck/blocking around long term.

I'm seriously hoping the ECM is correct, not just for storm potential either, also for warmer temps and more interesting weather. Fortunately, it's my most trusted model, so I want to side with it!

Hopefully the thundery potential if it even comes off will cover more areas this time around as well, not just the South and East.

Only really catching up as i've been a bit busy but some brilliant footage and photos of the storms from the past few days really enjoyed watching them and can only hope us in the Midlands eventually see some storms this year as good as these

And for us here in Wales!

There hasn't been anything since early January here when I got woken up between around 4:30AM in the morning by some rumbles, to see that there was a shower with the odd flash of lightning in the distance to the north.

The last week or so has been very frustrating with nearly a week of potential but everything stayed to the south or east and anything that was imported had died out by the time it got here and just produced rain showers.

  6. We had some distant lightning and thunder this morning some time after 7:00AM to the northwest and north of us.

I woke up first from a dream and then i heard a loud low rumble and i thought it might have been an earthquake or tremor, and it was only when i opened the curtains and then saw a flash in the sky that i knew it was lightning.

I then wen't outside and saw that this distant storm was then flashing every minute or so with distant rumbles for at least 15 minutes and i counted the time to hear the rumble from one of the flashes to be 45 minutes so it was about 9 miles away.

  8. Forgot to mention that it looks like we had a gust of 39.4mph on the 6ft high weather station in the garden last night at 2:35AM which is the highest gust the station has ever recorded since we put it up in early 2020.

That means there must have been gusts of at least 40-50mph up the hill in the early hours so the yellow warning was justified but just for a more smaller section of the night.

  10. It was a bit less stronger then forecast as i only managed to get a few 40mph gusts up the hill last night and mostly just gusts in the 30's. We were supposed to get gusts of at least 50mph if not higher.

The storms suppose to be filling and getting weaker today but I would say that the winds are just as gusty now as they were last night at the moment.

I did see some flashes last night as I was out though so somewhere must of had some lightning.

Have you tried looking at this morning models? I suggest windy.com and use the ECM and change to MPH for the UK, even has Beaufort scale if you prefer. Anyway, West Cork station, official showing mean wind at 69Mph last hour and max gust 84 mph. So depends where you are. I am in the north east and I've see a lot of storms, when that from went over between 8 and 10 am at times it was extraordinary, particularly on the last edge, tropical heavy hail and rain horizontal with sever gusts.

I was referring to our area here in Wales.

I know Ireland is getting it this morning as thats were the worst is supposed to occur first.

I still don't know when the worst is suppose to happen here, this afternoon or into the night hours?

I have to say, it isn't anything noteworthy here. We're in the peak gust time, and its not doing a great deal. A southerly here, usually brings big gusts, so it must be weaker than anticipated?!

Maybe the timings out, or the worst is going to be tonight.

It is just breezy here currently in Wales as well but i am pretty certain we are not supposed to really get anything until this evening and into the night hours.

I think it's very unlikely they have got it wrong in just a few hours of forecasting.

  14. Well I have all the gear I need to keep warm this time around with waterproofs and thermals so hopefully I will be able to actually go out in it and try and break my highest handheld wind gust of 53mph since living here in Brongest.

I have to go up the local hills to get these readings though so its just a case of when to go out for the highest winds which looks to be tonight, but some people are saying the peak is this late afternoon so I am not quite sure yet.

  16. That storm Friday night into Saturday bought the strongest winds I have seen since we moved here at brongest, Wales in 2018.

All during that night my weather station which is just over 6ft in height had quite a few gusts in the 30s mph which is unusual to get at ground level in a garden. All of my mothers dragon ornaments in the garden were knocked over and badly damaged.

Considering the day after I still managed to get 43mph and 46mph gusts up the hill tells me that there must have been frequent gusts in the 50s mph that night and possibly a few in the 60s mph which we hardly ever reach. I think its likely we had those level of winds as there were a few small trees that were uprooted or snapped in half, a few large branches off of some of the bigger trees and a neighbours scaffolding that had been knocked over.

Another thing is as I was watching the wind the gusts had a punch effect going over the house which I have hardly ever witnessed before and the amount of power flashes in the sky I saw that night was ridiculous.

I am a bit annoyed I wasn't able to go out to possibly break my handheld anemometer reading of 53mph since living here but I didn't risk going out up the hill to measure the winds as the wind chill would have been really bad and I wouldn't have wanted a tree or large branch to take my life. Had it been milder I could have just gone up earlier before the worst came as I wouldn't have had to worry about getting wind chill from being out the whole night. There are a load of trees each side of the road you have to walk past while walking up the hill before you come across safer open land and farm gates where I take my wind readings so I just couldn't risk it.
