  1. Had a gust of 41mph on the weather station at ground level in the garden today and I saw it hit 39mph as well.

Thats the highest I have recorded yet on this station but I think it's because we had Southerly winds and because quite a few trees have been cut down that way over the last year or so so more of the wind can probably now get through.

It wasn't any different to what we normally get though when i wen't up the top of the hill with my handheld anemometer with max gusts only into the 40's mph.

The highest gust I got up there in the afternoon was 47mph.

It's bad here now too in Sussex, I'm roughly 8 miles inland and wind gusts here are certainly in excess of 50 mph in the showers and that's being potentially conservative so could well be higher! Not at all surprised Portland has exceeded 80mph it gets very fierce there because of it's exposure. Was on Portland a few years back in a named storm and I've never seen the sea like it! The waves over the Portland tidal race and around pulpit rock were absolutely astonishing and I had a job to even stay on my feet!

Are there many houses at Portland?

I ask as I haven't been before and I would have thought with it getting about 30mph higher winds then other nearby areas that there would be many instances of quite bad structural damage or power cuts through out the winter months when the usual Atlantic storms come in.

Some quite heavy rain pushed this far up, bar a dry session for a hour or so inbound.

Very early 80s i used to make a 'pumpikn face' out of Potatoes with a 4mm birthday candel inside it.

My RIP Dad used to go mad Mom used to laugh - but then that was the early 80's as a kid you did what you thought best !

This is a small pumpkin my dad made today which I think was pretty good for a first try.

I think pumkins faces are one of the best things about halloween especially at night because even with a white colored head torch light like we put in this pumkin it still gives off a nice orange/yellow colored glow kind of light even without candles when its dark and the light is enclosed inside of it.

I am pretty certain that those winds won't be hitting many areas with many houses or power as those winds would cause bad structural damage and widespread power cuts. Widespread Severe gales and Storm, Violent storm or even Hurricane 1 in a smaller area according to the beaufort scale.

I have a handheld anemometer myself and have noticed the winds I get here to be much lower then what the weather models and agencies predict, sometimes 30-35mph lower in fact.

  5. Those storms we had on Wednesday night were another surprise and they came through a lot earlier than i had expected. I first noticed flashes after i had finished dinner and was watching them get gradually brighter and closer from the West and Southwest. I could just about make out faint rumbles at this point as well. I had to go in eventually though as it started raining.

Then i was starting to see the direct very bright flashes of lightning to the South whilst looking out of one of the house windows, although at this point there were fairly bright flashes going on all around us and the thunder was now proper and quite frequent rumbles with the odd booming thunder.

As it got even more closer i decided to watch it with no windows open as I thought it was getting too close for that and instead was watching it from the kitchen door. Before the quick downpour came we had mostly bright intra-cloud lightning near us and the odd powerful cloud-ground lightning. One of these lightning strikes made the power go out for a few seconds and shortly after the thunder came which was boomy and even in the house with everything closed it was still quite loud so i am wondering if it was a positive strike.

Once we had the short downpour come through the lightning was a lot more further away but was still quite frequent for at least another hour and i was watching it outside then as it was quite a distance away and it wasn't really raining either.

Over the next few hours the faint heat lightning flashes got less and less until about 1:00AM or 2:00AM when it stopped but i don't know exactly because i was too tired to stay up any longer.

  6. I have liked the last night and day quite a lot I have to say and its had both of the things I like of thundery and windy weather combined.

And we finally had some decent nighttime lightning to our far West last night after about two years of not having any🙂😀. It wasn't particularly frequent and it was a long way away so couldn't here any thunder but I think there were two or three separate cells and they were producing a strike every minute or so at their most intense.

The lightning I saw was a mixture of mostly sheet and intra-cloud around 11:00PM and then it died off. It wasn't until about 3:00AM after we had a shower come over us that there was some activity again but this time it was much further away only producing very faint flashes of heat lightning i.e lightning without any thunder.

Oh and the Easterly and Southeasterly winds have been quite good as well with most gusts into the 20's mph and a few that got into the 30's at the very top of our nearby hill.

  7. I have seen two distant flashes in the last hour or so and I might have just managed to hear the second flash which was from another area and a bit closer. We have been having some on and off showers here recently after the clear lull we had earlier in the evening.

Think its died down again now but it's too infrequent for me to wan't to spend the rest of the night looking out for anything.

  8. My mum came in not long ago saying she heard a rumble of thunder as well which surprised me as I wasn't expecting anything today.

I probably should have checked the site though as there have been a few convective forecasts issued today and I think Nicks forecast has me under a moderate warning at the moment which we have barely had at any other time of the year.

I was just doing my usual stuff on the computer when the rumble of thunder happened apparently.

Wind direction seems to be more in favour for us today. Hopefully the heavy showers in the south ATM will develop as they travel up

We have actually been having some heavy showers on and off here since the early hours and in fact I actually got woken up at least twice last night from the rainfall but there still hasn't been any thunder from these heavy showers yet.

But like you say I can see the change in wind direction being a good benefit to us for later as any storms that form in the South won't just move in a Northeasterly direction like they have done since Sunday.

IMBY, I’ve been in good warning zones throughout all this thundery period but have missed out. Still not a single rumble this year. I’m in the 50% zone today, highest yet. Fingers crossed

    Me as well!

Though I did have some short periods of thunder and lightning through the summer and a short-lived distant storm to the North of here way back in the first few day's of January very early in the morning when it was just getting daylight.

It's appalling to think though that in over these last three day's of storm potential we have not had anything. We haven't even had heat lightning which is faint flashes you see at night from storms many miles away.

  11. Looking like we have already had over half of our chance of getting something gone now with most risk of getting thunder only for today, tonight and tomorrow.

Left feeling very dissapointed about this recent thundery period as we have completely missed out on anything over every day that had a risk for something.

Just hoping that the next 24-36 hours finally changes that!

  12. One thing I would like to point out for my location during this thunderstorm chance period is that yes a few isolated spots may have had something in Wales these last couple of day's but I have to say that thats not saying much considering that most of the whole of the area has been under decent levels of warnings for quite a number of day's now.

In the last few years that I have been living here we have had periods in the past that had 30% or 50% risks like we have had in the last few day's and each day when those level of warnings were given most of the whole of Wales was effected by something at one point or another.

It's by far been probably one of the most annoying periods of storm watching I have known in my life. Only thing that I can hope for now is something over the next few day's as I don't think I can stay up late for any possible thunder tonight because I am knackered already from staying up for the total no shows these last few nights have brought.

Problem also is I am not as bothered about the next few day's as I was about the Sunday and Monday just gone because the ones possibly coming next will be daytime storms if anything comes and there have not been any night storms here this year just like last year and night storms are by far the best. The last time anything decent was around here at night was in August 2020!!!!!

  14. Some pictures of big cumulus/small cumulonimbus clouds I took yesterday evening which gave me a false sense of hope which I thought was going to be a sign for things later which they weren't. Didn't even see any faint distant flashes when it got dark even though these types of clouds were still about the place.

Wales has probably been one of the worst places to be for thunder in the country so far in this last couple of day's.

Quite frankly it's been appalling and i've never known to have so much bad luck of not getting anything even when all the forecasts keep giving us good chances for day's on end.

Another torrential tropical downpour in progress in this part of Pembrokeshire which, with all the combined rain over the last couple of days, should be helping to make a difference in the reservoirs by now.  There certainly seems to be plenty of excess moisture in the atmosphere right now, but whether this is partly of volcanic origin or simply evaporating from the sea due to above average temperatures, I couldn’t say.  We haven’t seen any lightning or heard any thunder in this area but I wouldn’t rule out some storms if the weather gets any more active.   In the meantime, more rain on the radar heading this way accompanied by gusty winds.
