After the snow event at the weekend, and the snow event on friday (hopefully good), then I wouldn't mind a repeat of late February 2005 to top it off. Of course snow events similar to 1991 or others would be just as good.

Cold spell ? What cold spell ?
Still nothing for this part of the UK/Europe at least until Sunday.
Tempts of 9/10 expected by Thurs/Frid.
The Mild, snowless. frost free winter continues.
We did have a temporary frost yesterday evening. Wow.

-1.2c here, was only -0.7 just a few minutes ago.

Excuse my ignorance but what does the index represent?
To calculate winter index [10 (days with sleet or snow) + (days with lying snow) +(days with airfrost)] / winter mean maxima
-
At least a third of the days in March are around 10C here.
Yes but May? I don't think so.

Cold spell ? What cold spell ?
Beautifully mild here today and quite sunny, almost like late April or early May.
I just checked wunderground for your location today, and it says maxima of 10c? That's hardly springlike, and temperatures like that in late April / early May would be rather cooler than average, especially under clear skies.
-
Maybe this thread should be renamed "Beyond Winter" or something like that, and then maybe a summer thread split from this after spring begins?
-
Well we were certainly teased with the prospects of a very cold February.
-
Met Office have been acting very strange. First they suddenly changed their outlook completely yesterday and now they have made another drastic change, after just 3/4 hour since today's original update.
-
I would like some snowy weather throughout March until early April, followed by continental conditions until early May with clear, frosty nights and sunny, warm days. Finally, as days get increasingly longer in the run up to June, increasingly warmer days occur perhaps becoming hot, with thunderstorms developing in late May.

The 06z GFS has only a brief strengthening of the PV. Does this tie in with any stratospheric warming events which could cause the PV to shatter after tightening up initially?

Average max: 7.5
Average min: 2.5
Days with rain: 17
Days with wintry precip: 3
Days with snow lying: 0
Days with fog: 2
Days with thunder: 0
Winter index: 13
Overall comment: Pretty poor in terms of wintry weather, on the mild side

Although I've had 9cm of lying snow since last evening, I feel very downhearted about the outlook today. Any consolation? I just feel theres been a signif downgrade thats all. And indeed, I feel much less confident about the rest of February now

Winter 2011/12 R.I.P
Another carrot being dangled before our eyes, as in heights over Greenland, are now being delayed somewhat going off this mornings output. I still believe that by the time heights become favourable, we'll be entering the latter stages of February. Who cares by then, the facts speak for themselves, how many cold spells have there been at the latter end of February, that have delivered the goods?
1986? Sub freezing days and snowfall in the last third of the month.
In recent years 2004 and 2005 had decent cold spells at the end of Feb/start of March and 2006 had a great March.

Looks like my 8cm snowcover will melt this afternoon, as the GFS 0z has me at 6c later

Best I can remember here in Leicester too. It's pretty unusual for leicester/notts to fair as well as other areas in the midlands. I measured 7cm about an hour before it stopped, wouldn't be surprised if we had 8 or 9cm in total.
Just really light particles of ice falling now. Definitely ice as it bounces off my hand when i'm outside. Very slight that on though, temps are just about freezing. Can here one or two drips once in a while.
Very happy overall Well done MetO for predicting the coverage and snow amounts so accurately.
I live a few miles to the west of Leicester, but my village is on a hill so it generally does good.
-
There's 8cm depth but I want the skies to clear soon to prevent a thaw! The snow turning to rain and 1c was certainly overestimated for me at least, as im currently sitting at 0.5c with no thaw.
-
-
8/9cm leics (western side)
Temp 0.5c, no sign of thawing or rain.

I've measured a snow depth of 8cm with 11cm drifts. I live 9 miles west of Leicester and got stuck for two hours in the city in the snow, with the cars struggling with momentum. Me and my family originally decided to go after some hesitation because it was turning sleety, but soon after we got there it turned very heavy indeed. Non-stop snow since 2.30pm only becoming lighter snow.
I've certainly got more than I originally thought.
-
Well I am getting close to 6cm now, but with the prospect of it all turning sleety as the night progresses what would you guess I'll wake up to tomorrow morning?
-
Am I correct in thinking this front has moved through slightly earlier than predicted? Not far from my location now and was only expecting it to reach here around 9pm...
Well I am a few miles to the west of Leicester and it arrived at 2.30pm for me, but only light snow then but it's not stopped since. From 3-3.30 it got heavier and hasn't moderated since.
I wasn't expecting any until around 6pm
-
Between 1-2 inches out there for me now
-
I think there's an inch of settled snow outside my house around now...

Now it's a bit nearer the time, how do you think the potential currently stands for snowy weather this upcoming Spring?
