  1. You reminded me of an old editor who was always "short of column inches" ... He's got 2 weeks of self quarantine to fill.
  2. From a specialist on scene, this video explains how the COVID spread so easily among the cruise passengers who were supposedly quarantined.
  3. Some of the patients with COVID presented with sickness and diarrhoea so it is possible. There is a new study published on the subject of health care worker infections.... some snips from it. I think the final paragraph applies to what we were discussing about early lack of awareness. Coronavirus Among Medics More Widespread Than Reported, Research Shows WWW.CAIXINGLOBAL.COM China’s CDC documents more than 3,000 medical-worker cases, almost double the official total, and finds almost half of critical patients die in biggest Covid-19 study yet
  4. Another hospital head succumbs to the virus. He was older but as @Snipper says, probably getting a heavy load of virus before full PPE in use.
  5. I'm a journalist, not a virologist but I would be more inclined to think that the virus is maybe spread by shedding from asymptomatic carriers. Seems unlikely the virus can live for so long on surfaces. A snip from the article from @Beverley Lass
  6. If the timeline is correct, COVID was circulating in early November and then passed on to the son: could account for explosion of numbers by late January. Was the infection spreading in hospitals as early as October of last year? Now we know how infectious it is, more likely he later caught the virus at the pharmacy where he would come into contact with sick people. This virus seems to have the ability to be carried in 'silent' mode. We know that from the number of people who are well but have the virus detected during contact screening. Many aspects to this that are puzzling. PS. Another 99 new cases on the cruise ship ... how is it transmitting when quarantine has been in place for almost 2 weeks?
  7. ACE2 Expression in Kidney and Testis May Cause Kidney and Testis Damage After 2019-nCoV Infection https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.12.20022418v1.full.pdf
  8. China Focus: China at "most crucial stage" of novel coronavirus prevention, control: official - Xinhua | English.news.cn WWW.XINHUANET.COM This is a good article detailing the response to the challenge. Snip...
  9. Another success with Remdesivir treatment. Diagnosed with double pneumonia and having to spend 22 days in hospital is not exactly typical of flu cases. He was never serious (as far as I know) but still needed a lot of time and resources from the healthcare system
  10. No mistake, just different classification to now count clinically diagnosed cases as well as laboratory confirmed tests. This also applies to death numbers. PS ... the WHO are in town!!
  11. It doesn't make sense as it will unrealistically raise the case fatality numbers.
  12. Agreed. Factor in the quarantine aspect of the facilities in use, the length of stay reported in ICU (3-4 weeks) and the probability staffing numbers will be hit by infections also.
  13. Military flight to repatriate US citizens from Wuhan. It's like a scene from one of the pandemic disaster movies from yesteryear.
  14. Is it not the patient from Hove? ... and a result of contact tracing working as it should. Think the suspected cases in the one of the Spanish islands also connected.
  15. This interview shows how seriously the doctors took the risk to be but still the authorities dragged their feet. Reporter's Notebook: Life and death in a Wuhan coronavirus ICU, East WWW.STRAITSTIMES.COM East Asia News -WUHAN (CAIXIN GLOBAL) - In the coronavirus epidemic, doctors on the front lines take on the greatest risk and best understand the...
  16. I hope the news is correct but mention of ECMO points to treatment of last resort.
  17. A 34 year old doctor, one of the initial whistleblowers, dies after weeks in ICU.
  18. Any new virus with 95% similarity to SARS would press many governmental buttons to take drastic early measures.... no vaccine and not knowing efficacy of existing anti-virals... plus their early cases may all have been very severe as it was only detected through hospitalisation of pneumonia patients. Did you see the case studies from Japan and elsewhere that show quite a few first tests are negative: only prolonged and worsening symptoms lead to more testing to get the positive result. On that basis, there's probably more cases worldwide than we think but it's just taken to be a cold or flu and life goes on.
  19. The Chinese were the first to say they had asymptomatic carriers but the USA did not think it was correct. The Japanese have found asymptomatic carriers among the evacuees from China. 3 More Japanese from Wuhan Test Positive for Coronavirus WWW.NIPPON.COM Tokyo, Feb. 1 (Jiji Press)--Three more Japanese citizens who returned home from Wuhan, China, on government-ch…
  20. I'm old enough to have had sheep's head broth on many occasions. I suppose Scrapie and BSE have put that one off menu for most.
  21. Ready to go !! Will be a basic quarantine facility ... note bars on windows and hatch for food, meds etc.
  22. Gilead Sciences Offers Experimental Drug for Coronavirus Treatments, Testing The U.S. biotech firm has formalized agreement with China to conduct clinical trial of remdesivir. Gilead Sciences Offers Experimental Drug for Coronavirus Treatments, Testing WWW.WSJ.COM Gilead Sciences has provided doses of an experimental antiviral drug to doctors for the emergency treatment of a small number of patients infected by the new...
  23. More strange aspects to this virus and maybe why the Chinese scientist who was infected was using HIV drugs as therapy. Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag WWW.BIORXIV.ORG bioRxiv - the preprint server for biology, operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a research and educational institution I've only read the conclusions but they seem to be suggesting this has been engineered ????
  24. Study on the German cases, all from a contact with no apparent symptoms. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2001468 Timeline graph. PS, urge people to read all the text .. firstly, to reassure illness can be very short lived: ie, sick over weekend and well enough to go back to work on Monday but shedding heavy viral load sufficient to infect more co-workers not in contact with index case.
  25. The CFR is high for known hospitalised cases: what we do not know is how many mild cases are going unrecorded. True figures will only become available as time goes on and it can be calculated in a more transparent location.
