  1. Well I can tell you that the visibility is significantly less than 100m here at the airport. Around 50m max. I can barely see the buildings just across the road! Looking at TWC, for my location they're predicting a 50% chance of snow showers on Thursday. http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/Luton+UKXX0088:1:UK
  2. As someone said earlier, Luton had a short hailstorm around 4pm. From my top floor office at the airport looking over the town, I had a perfect view of it building up. (Obviously it wasn't) but it looked like a wedge tornado! Maybe something with cooling temps overnight, something similar may perk up again.
  3. Isn't that really just going to be a Kent/Suffolk event? Nothing really for the Home Counties?
  4. So "the beast from the east" was the biggest bust since.... (I'll let you finish that sentence!) Any bigger turnarounds than THAT ECM?
  5. That Countryfile forecast - it was a repeat from last week was it not?
  6. This was the only forecast that correctly predicted Wednesday morning's snowfall. I shall be watching with keen interest, however, as others have said, it won't tell us much more than what we already knew: we haven't got a clue!!
  7. I honestly dont know what to believe at the moment! What is the general consensus?
  8. Look East (East Anglia and Home Counties) forecast "snow showers" on Tuesday. Still sitting on the fence.
  9. Don't know whether I'm talking rubbish, but isn't the trend for the models to completely overestimate any potential weather conditions by a big margin; have a huge downgrade and then surprise us, close to the end? To be honest, whenever I've used Netweather's forecasts in the past, they've been hopelessly inaccurate.
  10. I think the last few days prove how difficult it is to forecast these snow events. We give the Met Office a lot of flak, but forecasting UK weather, especially at this time of year is an absolute minefield! Still a week out - there will be many twists and turns to come.
  11. Good evening everyone - hope everyone had an enjoyable day at work, unlike me! Haven't had chance to trawl through all the pages - any updates? Is snowmaggedon still on for late next week? I guess there's been a small inevitable downgrade - those charts must've been too good to be true?
  12. Thought as much. All it needs now is a weather system to come in off the Atlantic and bang - the classic battleground scenario. Early days though.
  13. For someone that's a bit of a novice, how much snow would -8 to -12 850hPa output? Looking at the following Saturday, its suggesting -14 to -16?! Must be an error, surely?
  14. Where has this come from!? Already about 1-2 cm so far in Luton. Thought this wouldve been just a higher ground event (Im about 500ft amsl) but obviously not looking at the previous post!
  15. Looking at the latest BBC forecasts, am I the only one thinking the Met Office have underestimated the amount of snow and location. Not talking bucketloads, but surely the cold air will put up more resistance and a battleground will develop. Maybe I'm talking out of my backside?
  16. I remember the October snowfall in 2008 well. I was off to a Luton football game and rain/sleet was forecast. Started walking up towards the ground and heavy snow starts to fall and abandons the game in the first 10 minutes, almost completely unexpected. Because of the elevation, in town the snow level was far greater towards the airport (here) than in town. The airport itself has its own microclimate.
  17. Got a good feeling about this winter. Last winter was almost an absolute white-off down south - even at this elevation. Get it?!
  18. Very very very sceptical about anything south of the Tyne.
  19. Wasn't expecting anything to happen today, but about half hour ago we suddenly had a torrential downpour with a flash of lightning. Seem to end within a couple of minutes though; managed to knock out the Sky box! Location is nr LTN airport.
  20. Was only an EF0 tornado according to TWC. Same sort of severity we saw a few months ago in Lincs.
  21. Went to Florida in August 2001. My goodness, they must've seen us coming! Flew from LGW to Sanford Airport, so involved about a 60-90 minute drive to get to our villa near Kissimmee. As soon as I walked out of the airport doors, the heat just hit me and wanted to go back into the air conditioned arrivals hall immediately! The captain didn't mention storms on arrival, however CBs were towering over the back of the terminal building. Got our hire car fine and started driving. Conditions gradually deteoriated and suddenly it had gone from day to night (it was around 3-4pm). Suddenly, we were surrounded by several cells, lightning coming from all angles. No tornado warnings. A stunning sight, if a bit scary. Large hail, a deluge of rain; driving was impossible. Cleared up a couple of hours later, but was an absolutely incredible sight - a memory that has lived with me forever. Florida is a typical tropical region. Late afternoon thunderstorms, without fail, daily in August. Go to the Southern Asia and I assume the conditions are exactly the same?
