  1. Got some great pics of an approaching storm. Shall post later.
  2. Just a typical wet day here with a strong breeze. Didn't expect that much anyway. Sadly in recent years our weather forecasts and media coverage have become americanized which then results in OTT coverage. A classic example of this is in winter when 2 inches of snow falls in London. When I was younger such an event wouldn't even get a mention from the forecasts or media. Now 2 inches falls and all hell breaks loose. We even close schools now in anticipation of bad weather and yet in Jan 87 the school only closed for 1 day! In summer the words Supercell, MCS, severe storms are all too frequently used, when infact we are only looking at a bog standard UK storm!
  3. Personally I feel this is being over hyped. For a majority this will be nothing more than a spell of heavy rain and a strong breeze. Obviously some locations may see more in the way of severe weather but these will be the exceptions.
  4. Looks like a storm is heading towards Peterborough.
  5. This has surprised me. I expected a few light showers followed by hot sunshine, currently I have lightning and thunder. The knock on effect is I doubt we shall reach the predicted temps unless these storms pass through quickly. I think this is our 7th or 8th storm this summer. Can any other Peterborough members confirm the number?
  6. Looking at the models it is difficult to pin down the favoured locations because the risk of storms seems so widespread tonight. Having said this if I went on instinct and previous experience then I would choose Sussex, Kent. Overall though taking all the parameters into account I would say over the next 36 hrs the risk is greater for the E/SE than the W/SW. I won't be too bothered if im wrong though because I have already seen so many storms this summer it would be nice if others joined in the action.
  7. I vividly remember the 90's storms. I even have one event on video tape which I keep meaning to transfer onto my laptop. I also remember a holiday in Norfolk in 1990 when lightning was continuous from 11pm to 6am. Very little thunder or rain but amazing visually.
  8. Just noticed that last nights Euro4 is now predicting 32C with my location being the hot spot! http://expert-images.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/euro4/2014/07/16/basis18/ukuk/tmax/14071818_1618.gif
  9. Getting excited at the potential of seeing severe storms. The use of the word "Severe" is often over used on this thread but with the current set up for later this week/weekend, we could genuinely see severe storms. Im not focussing too much yet on the models or the BBC/Met O forecasts because past experience tells me its pointless. I have no doubts there will be winners & losers and sometimes it simply boils down to luck and timing. For example a severe storm could move up from the channel overnight and weaken to leave a band of cloud and rain during the day preventing convection from kicking off. For guidance I shall be following Nick F forecasts. I find these the most accurate and are even better than the Met O. What I like about Nick F isn't just his knowledge but he isn't OTT. I find some websites tend to be too sensational and predict severe storms far too often.
  10. Storm risk today appears to be further N than some are suggesting.
  11. Interesting sat pic. Clearly see the line of storms developing across my area. http://www.sat24.com/en/gb Note though the storm developing within the clearer area across towards Northampton. This could develop into a beast over the next couple of hrs.
  12. My storm map I posted yesterday is still looking good. Only update is the area below could see much stronger storms over the next 3-4hrs.
  13. Im expecting some sunshine to break through after this storm and then the action should really kick off afterwards. Lincs could see some action shortly as this line of storms intensifies.
  14. What area are you in as im in Gunthorpe? Now have car alarms going off!
  15. We haven't had any sunshine here in Peterborough and its remained overcast and yet we now have a storm.
  16. OMG a lightning bolt has just hit a house just 100 metres away. The thunder was instant and incredibly loud. My poor cat is petrified and the rain is incredible!
  17. Should brighten up by late morning. If so then its looking good for our area yet again!
  18. Don't often see precip charts like this. http://expert-images.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/euro4/2014/06/26/basis12/ukuk/prec/14062715_2612.gif Some very large rainfall totals possible tomorrow especially across the Midlands.
  19. Looking out of my bedroom window towards the E and this storm has some rotation in it. Pretty much guarantee this will develop a tornado across the fens.
  20. Another line of storms developing to the N of Peterborough. May miss just to the E of us but im hoping not. Love living where I do at this time of year.
  21. Convection is really kicking off here now with towering cumulus. I would expect showers to break out more widely over the next couple of hrs.
  22. No im afraid. I cannot see storms developing any further W than say the central Midlands. Im getting rather excited at the potential for my area this evening.
