  1. One thing I've noticed in the last 2 days is something which is a sign that spring is almost here and it's to do with the cloud. Obviously there was an occluded front which moved through late last night/early this morning which brought some cloud and some snow showers in the West but this cleared later in the morning and it became mostly clear and sunny for a while like yesterday morning was before a lot of fair weather cloud built up in the afternoon which then dissolved again on both evenings. That's a classic sign of spring where the heat from the sun is able to start generating convection as some areas become warmer than others which leads to rising air and clouds forming. In a month or twos time the air and ground would be warmer which would allow stronger convection to occur and therefore showers would become more widespread (as is normal in spring). On the other hand, a month ago, this set up would probably be producing clear skies all through the day. Anyway, today's Max was 5.5C. Now it's down to 2.6C. With it expected to be completely clear all night tonight unlike last night when more cloud came down from the Northwest, I think it could be colder than the -3.3C I recorded last night. One thing I have noticed is that here there has not been one night all winter where it has been completely clear and calm all night. The lowest I have recorded was in January on the Friday night before the Saturday when snow came in from the west. That night it was -4.7C but I remember even the evening before that the temperature kept going up and down until about 11pm as the breeze picked up and died down. And even last night which I think was the second coldest I've had this winter, had more cloud during the second half of the night. Therefore tonight could be the first completely clear and calm night of the whole winter so it could end up being the coldest. Edit: wow that's the longest post I've written by some way
  2. Overnight min of -3.3C in Grangemouth. Been quite a lot.of.cloud this morning but dry and bright with some short sunny spells but it's turning increasingly sunny now as clearer skies move down from the north. Was 1.4C when I left the house at 10. Mostly sunny in Edinburgh now
  3. Currently -2.0C which is already below what was the forecast min for tonight. If it keeps going like this I could break my coldest recorders temperature of the winter which was -4.7C
  4. Min last night was -1.4C. Was clear and sunny early this morning but cloud has developed through the day both in Edinburgh and Grangemouth so it's sunny spells rather than full on sunny. I can actually see a rainbow a wee bit away so must be a little bit of rain in one of the clouds. Had a Max of 6.4C. Now it's down to 5.8C with a low humidity of 48%, so dew point is -4.4C
  5. Was at the Eskdalemuir observatory today on a trip with the university (Edinburgh) looking at the Met Office equipment and the seismic and magnetism equipment too. Very interesting. From his screen I saw that the min Temp last night there was -5.9C and the Max this afternoon was 2.6C I think. It was cloudy and dry whilst I was there.
  6. A min of -2.9C overnight. The graphics on the BBC this morning didn't look as good for snow on Sunday as they were showing yesterday with the weather front further south although Matt Taylor still said there was the chance of sleet and snow in Scotland and I'm sure the position of that weather front will continue to change between now and Sunday. But the temperatures that the met office and BBC are showing for Sunday (4-6C) aren't really conducive to snow but sometimes they do overestimate the temperatures a few days away.
  7. About an hour ago Stav on the BBC said there could be heavy snow in central and southern Scotland on Sunday
  8. Snowing here and starting to lie on grass, cars, hut roofs etc. Had a feeling last night when the temperature was dropping quicker than predicted that we might get a surprise this morning. Currently 0.6C with a dew point of -1.2C
  9. It's already down to 2.4C here with a dew point of 0.0C. Very surprised its as low as that already. Surely some areas with a little bit of elevation must already be seeing snow falling.
  10. Been raining heavily since early afternoon here, 12.6mm according to the weather station. It has cooled down over the last couple of hours. It was 7.3C at 10pm, now its 4.0/2.0C. I'd be surprised if it turns to full on snow here tomorrow morning, more likely to turn sleety or maybe a bit of wet snow but next to chance of anything lying, although I thought that on Saturday too and that proved me wrong.
  11. Temp has dropped to 0.6C and a few point of -1.3C and heavy snow which is now beginning to lie despite everything being saturated half an hour ago. 10 minutes ago is the biggest snow flakes I have ever seen. Still big now and still heavy. Strange that it's snowing here and just rain or sleet in other areas of the central belt when usually this is one of the few places that sees rain when it's snowing everywhere else. Edit: well I say beginning to lie, I mean on grass, cars, top of the huts etc. The ground is slushy but will turn white soon if it keeps going
  12. Temp dropped slightly to 2.2C and its turned to heavy sleet/hail/wet snow. It's hard to tell which it is. It's white but falling like rain. Dew point is 0.1C
  13. Was 2.6C here and raining lightly last time I checked. Everything wet.
  14. Cloud starting to increase here and up to 0.3C, but the BBC were predicting it to have got no lower than 3C so far tonight yet it has been below freezing, so hopefully there'll be a bit of snow here too
  15. According to the radar, Edinburgh should be seeing a shower just now. Can anyone confirm what's falling? Here it's -0.2C dry and clear/smoky
  16. 0.5C here just now. Dry and I think it should be clear if it wasn't for the clouds of smoke being generated by Ineos. And of course that's to the east of me, so any showers is going to do well to stay as snow after passing through that warm gas
  17. Temperature here is 4.7C but the humidity is 59% with a dew point of -2.5C. Been clear for a while but its just started to rain
  18. Was horrific outside for 5 minutes at about quarter to 7. The worst I've ever seen it. I think the main band of heavy squally rain which brough the really strong winds has cleared most now and the rest of the day will be windy with frequent showers with winds becoming very strong during the showers. Then tonight exactly the same but with the showers becoming snow. Although the ground will be saturated due to all the rain and the Temperature probably won't get below 0C for most, I think the snow will lie because of the intensity of the showers
  19. Just awful outside. Heavy and almost horizontal rain accompanied by strong winds. Probably worse than any of the named storms in terms of actual conditions. Was 7.6C at 7.15 after a min of 5.7C
  20. Min of -1.5C in Grangemouth. Was 0.4C when I left the house at 9.20. Dry and cloudy
  21. Quite misty too. Can't see any hills more than about 1km away from the train
  22. Light rain in Grangemouth, although it's got heavier in the last half hour. Temp was 0.6C when I left half an hour ago and the dew point was -0.9C. Though on my way up to polmont train station the windscreen looked as if it had some wintry bits on it so maybe turning a bit to sleet. The min overnight was 0.0C. Sitting in the car right now in a car park and it looks as if steam is rising from all the cars.
  23. Something is falling but despite me having very good eyesight, its so fine that I can't tell what it is. Current Temp and dew point is 0.2/-1.7C so that would suggest snow but with the milder uppers, that could scupper it. Still quite a bit of snow lying here although clearly less deep on the top of huts etc. Had a max of 0.9C today.
  24. Got 4.6cm here in Grangemouth. That is very good for here. I was working from 2pm to 10pm so missed most of the action. Had a max of -0.3C which is the joint coldest day of the winter along with a Sunday in December. The drive home was the first time I've driven on relatively deep snow after passing my test in the summer of 2013.
