  1. Last night got down to -0.5/-6.0C. Clear, sunny start. High cloud moving in from the west only really making the sky look white, not blocking the sun
  2. Snow showers in Callander tonight. The picture is just when I was leaving and was beginning to stick to cars and some big flakes on the paths. Got back to Grangemouth when it was dry and clear at 1.3/-1.3C about 2 hours ago. Now its cloudier at 2.9/-1.2C. As you can see the snow even turned blue for a while above one of the dugouts
  3. When I left my house in Grangemouth at 9.15 it was 4.7C and a shower of rain. 10 minutes later in polmont there was a shower of sleet
  4. And the dew point has dropped by 1C in 10 minutes. Now 2.8/-0.1C. And its turned back to rain
  5. Here the rain has just turned to sleet in the last 5 minutes. Temp/ dew point is 3.2/0.9C and has fallen by at least 1C every hour since 2.45 when it was 7.0C
  6. Sleet showers here. Was 2.1C when I left the house at 8
  7. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1427328000 Surprised nobody is mentioning the snow forecast for overnight and early tomorrow morning. Snow accumulating over 200m but warning does say potentially 1cm or some slush at lower levels.
  8. Low of -2.1C last night. Looks like snow for high ground tonight and tomorrow morning
  9. Very enjoyable morning in the meteorology lab at the top of the JCMB building at the university. A telescope was set up that projected the image of the sun and moon onto a screen and there was a big sheet of protective film along the windows to look through as well as the same film attached to bits of paper with holes in them. Was sunny up until 9.20 then it clouded over but still patches that were thin enough to see the sun through. From 8.50 until 11.00 I was taking temperature readings from the 2 sets of thermometers. While it was sunny the temperature rose from about 8.50 until 9.20 from about 9.4 to 9.7 which was a slightly lower than increase than you would expect in constant sunshine at that time of the day at this time of year. At 9.20 though it clouded over and it dropped to 9.0. A bit frustrating that it clouded over during that period because it's hard to tell how much of that drop was due to the cloud and how much due to the eclipse. However from about 10.00 to 10.20 the temperature rose again from 9.0 to 9.3 despite it staying cloudy. This was of course when more sun was appearing from behind the moon and since it was still cloudy, I think this increase was definitely due to the eclipse. At 10.20 the sun came out again and the temperature rocketed up quickly to 10.5 and only went up slightly after that. The picture of the fields were close to the peak darkness and the brighter areas are where the sun was shining but was very dim compared to normal
  10. Pleasantly surprised that it's a bright, sunny start in Grangemouth. Some patchy cloud but not the sheet that was forecast. Having said that there does look to be thicker cloud to the Northwest which may ingulf most central areas for the eclipse. The east still looks the favoured part of Scotland so I'm hopeful in seeing it in Edinburgh.
  11. Weather station says it got up to 15.2C yesterday morning in the sun before it clouded over at lunchtime and dropped to around 12C for the afternoon. Skies cleared last night and the sky looked a slightly different colour to normal. Because of light pollution, you can't really see the aurora properly but the sky did look tovhave a slight shade of purple and green. Might just have been my imagination. Last night the temperature dropped to -1.0C. Sunny start today with a temperature of 1.7C at half7 but expected to cloud over late in the day as the weather front approaches that will spoil the partial solar eclipse sighting for most of us. Although there is the chance of some breaks in the cloud in the east and so I'll be getting up to go to university early tomorrow. I'm actually taking part in a nationwide experiment organised by Reading university where we will take weather observations for the hour before, during and the hour after the eclipse to see how it affects the weather.
  12. Very dull and misty yesterday with some drizzle in the afternoon in Edinburgh. Misty start this morning too but the sun was already trying to break through in Grangemouth at 8am. Just reached Edinburgh and although visibility isn't great, the sun is out. Temperature was between 4.9C and 5.2 from 11pm last night to 8am this morning
  13. Don't know if it was sunny this afternoon or not because I was working from 2 to midnight but it there were some areas where the cloud was just beginning to break slightly. Now the cloud is non existent and it is clear across the sky. That has allowed the temperature to drop much lower than forecast. Currently -1.0C but it has dropped by 1C in the last hour
  14. Low of -1.7C. Cloud has come in and the temperature has risen quicker than it did yesterday
  15. Coldest night for a while and a sunny, calm start although that won't last. Minimum of -2.2/-5.1C
  16. My plan probably won't work actually because that wall is concrete so I would need to drill through it. Anyway, cloudy, dry, mild, breezy start at 7.3C
  17. Thanks for the reply. I've attached a photo of my garden and looks to the west. If I was to attach it to the north of the shed lower down then it would be a bit of an obstacle when walking on the path. The fence to the left has holes in it so the sun would still shine through onto it. I think I'll try putting it low down on next doors building which is to the left of my shed. It will be even less exposed to the wind but except putting it on the roof, it is exposed to the wind as much as it could possibly be at the moment(considering that my street is open to the west) and that isn't great.
  18. Just before some people hibernate away until next winter. I've attached a picture of my weather station. It's good except 2 things. One is that it drastically underestimates wind speeds. The other which I care about the most is that when the sun is out the temperature reading is way too high. I know naturally that the air does naturally warm when the sun comes out. However I know that the temperature reading from it is too high. For example in January, there was one day where the expected high was 3C but when the sun went through the gap between the houses and shone on the weather station, it went from 2C to 7C in half an hour despite it not feeling like the temperature had changed much. The thermometer is on the right hand side of the picture and I believed that the cylindrical Stevenson screen around it would stop the sun from having an effect however it doesn't seem to stop the temperature from rising rapidly and as a result it isn't recording what the actual air temperature is in the shade. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get a more accurate temperature reading? I had put the station quite high so that it would be exposed to the wind but even if I put it lower, surely it won't make a difference as the sun will still shine on it at some point in the day. I also thought that it might just be that it was rising because the sun was low enough to shine through the gaps in the screen but the rising sun hasn't made a difference.
  19. Alternating between sleet and snow for the last hour and a half in Edinburgh
  20. About 1 cm this morning in Grangemouth but already melted in areas exposed to the sun. I expect the more organised band this afternoon to be rain or sleet at lower levels as the freezing level is supposed to rise
  21. At about 19.15 I seen a flash of lightning but it wasn't snowing at the time. Been a few snow showers tonight which had been starting to lie on cars, huts but this shower has turned everything white. Very heavy big flakes with a strong wind almost making it a blizzard. Temperature has just nosedived to 0.3C/-2.3C
  22. Woke up at 6.15 with light rain which turned to sleet then wet snow. Temperature was 0.9C with dew point -1.6C
  23. I was driving on the motorway between Grangemouth and Sirling during that heavy snow shower which passed through about half 8 last night. Wasn't lying but that's the snowiest conditions I've ever had to drive through. Having said that,I've only been driving a year and a half so there's not much competition. Temperature was up to 3.0C when I left the house at 8.30am with rain showers
  24. Sunny, cold, windy afternoon in Edinburgh. Shower clouds to the north and west though that have that snowy colour to them
