Convective/Storm Discussion Thread - 8th July onwards
stainesbloke replied to Supacell's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Excellent night for many of us, about time! The MCS glanced here around 21:30 yesterday evening, I was driving home and skies to the NW were amazing, very angry looking and despite it not being dark yet, there was a jet black layer into which scud was being sucked up at a very rapid rate, not seen that here for a long time. A mini gust front came through suddenly where the E'ly breeze switched to a SW'ly gale but only for about a minute! Then calm, then back to a light E'ly. 5 minutes of extremely heavy rain. Lightning started then and continued until after midnight as that storm moved NE, very frequent, at times everybody 1-2 seconds apart. I fell asleep and was woken by another big storm around 02:30, was so tired I only watched for a few minutes but some wonderful very frequent forked lightning and thunder. Passed out sadly so missed most of it! -

Wow! So much lightning to the NE, nearly every second. -

Lightning from the monster storm to my N/NE has gone mental. Nearly every second now! Gorgeous. -

The lightning on the NE horizon has really gone mad! Must be an epic storm, lucky people under it! Looks like more incoming from the Channel. -

Quite exciting seeing that scud moving so quickly, then a 60 second or so sudden squally blast of wind! Also excited to see all that explosive convection in the Channel. -

Some very angry skies here. Had an intense burst of tropical intensity rain. There's loads of lightning in the northern horizon but very faint thunder. Bit of a gust front went through and some very fast updraughts, not seen scud move that quickly for years. Channel looks tasty! -

Below average temperatures and rain/showers in high summer, how wonderful. Of course, we have so many months of the year for that joyousness but let us all rejoice that the peak holiday weeks will probably be ruined by constant troughing. -

Thought it was meant to be hot and sunny? Loads of cloud about and not especially warm. -

As expected. Joyous chilly troughs to look forward to at the start of holiday season, yay. -

The human body does build up a tolerance to heat and cold quite quickly. I've worked a lot out to places like Singapore and Bangkok (30's C and 90% humidity), also Montreal and Toronto (freezing in winter, worst I experienced was -32C). Once you've been in those conditions a day or two, you do start getting used to it. I prefer the heat but wouldn't want it all the time. -

I do believe you and have to agree with you. Today here reached 27C with light winds and plenty of sunshine, those are absolutely perfect summer conditions in my humble opinion. Am certainly not hoping for 40C! I know it's very interesting on a synoptic level but unless one has a swimming pool and air conditioning, probably not too pleasant. Just no vile troughs hanging around for weeks at this time of the year, anything but. -

Do calm down, dear. I can feel your blood pressure rising from here. Have you ever thought about amateur dramatics? On a more serious note, you'll be pleased to know that GFS is pretty much out there on its own, it is extremely unlikely to verify. Though I'm praying that GFS is right for this weekend, will be a lovely weekend camping rather than the vile miserable filth the UKMO is showing, ugh. -

After days of gloomy skies, summer has finally returned with lovely strong sunshine, blue skies and light breezes. Currently a pleasant 23C. -

It's a possibility. Maybe the GFS will follow the latest ECM tomorrow? -

Not all bad for sure. Might even see a thunderstorm this week, have forgotten what they are. Flying ants swarming for the second time in 2 weeks. Such a shame the hot days can't be over a weekend. But if there are enough sunny spells, could be pleasant and with chances of some convective interest. -

They swarmed a week or two ago here, at it again! Must mean a severe MCS supercellular US-style outbreak is on the way.... -

We seem to have reached the nadir and are now starting to see very slight improvements to conditions this coming weekend. Notably UKMO which keeps the trough further to the NW and fills it out nicely, so areas to the S and E in particular might actually get away with a reasonable weekend. Awaiting further runs with interest. -

I'm sure there'll be plenty of real green snot after all the colds and illnesses caught by getting drenched in chilly winds. Joyous. -

That's true, we are one of the last places to get snow. I'll always prefer a long, hot summer though! -

I feel very sorry for those living in the N. Another crap summer for them. Hopefully there'll be some nationwide high pressure in August and September to enjoy. -

Lol yes, green snot all the way. Of course. one hopes that the coming winter is not harsh as loss of life and transport being crippled by cold and snow would also be unacceptable. -

Yes it does look like thinning out. Quite a humid feel today, nice and warm.
