  1. That sounds to me like possible battleground situations from the south west. That'll do me!
  2. Yes I'm optimistic. The latest met office update is incredible and all the models are pointing to a bitterly cold spell of weather. The ecm is just one run, and still not a bad one. As far as I can see, all the models offer something very wintery for all and possibly for a very extended period.
  3. I"m seeing no downgrades, only small variations of the same theme. In fact my gut feeling, and the models, are telling me we're entering a period of extremely cold weather that we could be talking about for many years to come. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
  4. Every time the temperature is set to drop with the weather, the temperature certainly rises in this forum. All good fun though!
  5. The colder weather, if or when it arrives, is meant to arrive towards the end of next week . Then, maybe, becoming progressively colder.
  6. By these peoples reasoning then the South East should take up half the weather map and sod everyone else!
  7. After light snow for the last half hour here in Yate, it's now coming down heavier with massive flakes. Lovely!
  8. Thanks. I remember when he used to post on this site. It was great to have his input on here. I don't know exactly what happened, but more fool the people who drove him off here. Talk about shooting the messenger! Anyway Ian if you're reading this, it would be great to see you back.
  9. Apologies if I shouldn't have posted Fergie's reply. The last thing I'd want to do is cause him any problems. I thought if it was a reply he had made on twitter for anyone to see, it wouldn't be a problem me posting it on here. Anyway if I've been naive I apologise and would delete it if I bloody could!
  10. Fergie just replied to a tweet - My gut feeling is for a marked cold outbreak later Feb, but that's very different to a deterministic forecast;-) I do home Fergie's gut feeling is right!
  11. After a couple of hours of very light snow it's really pepped up here and been snowing quite heavily for the last half hour. Lovely!
  12. Yes I get what you're saying but even here, in this part of the south west, in the last decade we've had the winters of 2009/10 and 2010/11 which produced long cold spells and numerous snowfalls. 2013 which produced a heavy snowfall during January and even this year two light snowfalls with snow cover for a few days. The above really isn't much different from the 70's and 80's believe me. The problem with the human mind is that it remembers the boiling hot summers and cold snowy winters but forgets about the normal, mudane weather and tricks us into believing they were common place events but they really weren't!
  13. This is absolute rubbish. The areas you mentioned will get plenty of cold weathrr and snowfalls in years to come. Why people look back on winters past with their rose tinted glasses on I don't know. Having lived through the 70's and 80's I can tell you there were plenty of mild winters back then. Yes there were very cold snaps and big snowfalls here in the south west but they were rare events even back then. In years to come, when conditions are right we will still see very cold weather and snowfalls, even here in the south west, but they will be pretty rare events and they always were!
  14. At last a sensible post from someone who doesn't look back with rose tinted glasses at winters gone by.
  15. That would suggest battleground scenarios are quite possible.
  16. Interesting tweet from Fergie for those who like their cold weather. Yes, plus models will struggle to capture how/when this all gets popped by mobility returning (which may be a rather torturous sequential affair, rather than all in one go). Either way, the risk is evident for most widespread cold conditions thus-far in winter 17-18.

  18. I remember the Jan 82 blizzard well. We were living in a lowland area just north of Bristol and were snowed in for a week by 10 foot snow drifts. Just over the bridge in Newport had a measurement of 80cms of level snow. An incredible event. Yes the South West can be well placed for big snowfalls when conditions are right. Hoping to see another such event soon!
  19. The Jan 82 battleground situation created a two day blizzard over S Wales, the South West and West country with deep, deep snow and intense cold for days after.
  20. Woken up to a nice surprise this morning. I was expecting maybe a sprinkling but we have a good couple of inches here in North Yate.
  21. I'm working away in Stratford Upon Avon. Currently -10c here. Brrrr.
