  1. Freezing fog all day here in Yate. Just been out and thermometer in van was showing -2C. Don't know how accurate that is though.
  2. That's not far off excluding me here in Yate! Hopefully an eastward shift nearer the time to get everyone involved. It would be nice to cap off this cold spell with some decent widespread snow for the region.
  3. Hi Don, yeah not too far from you. I remember some great battleground events in the west country over the years. The best ones obviously when the cold eventually wins out and you're left with nice deep snow cover that lasts for a good while. Fingers crossed we're in for something similar this year, it's long overdue!
  4. I like the forecast for the end of the month. It screams the chances of battleground snowfall. High risk for high reward. It might change, but if not, bring it on I say!
  5. Snowing in Yate. Edit. Well that must go down as the quickest snow flurry ever!
  6. That band of showers moving across from the east looks like it may reach the area. Likely to be snow but only light and patchy. Enough to give a dusting in places though. Edit. It looks like the Cotswolds have eaten up the remnants of the showers.
  7. Hi, a question from a complete novice. So is the SSW affecting the models already even though it hasn't actually occurred yet? Or has it occurred? Sorry really confused. Thanks in advance.
  8. Serious question from a complete novice when it comes to reading the models but is it worth even looking at the models for a period of time if a SSW can shuffle the deck so much so to speak? Thanks in advance.
  9. Exactly Sheldon. The brain remembers the cold, snowy winters and the long, hot summers, like the summer of 76 for example, but forgets all the mundane, normal weather in between. This fools us into believing every childhood winter was cold and snowy and every summer was a long and hot. The truth is that 95% of our weather is rather dull and mundane.
  10. To add to my post about winters past, an example of how not a lot has changed even long before the winters of the 70s and 80s that I can remember. At 5.0c December 2020 shares the same mean CET with December's: 1660 1663 1668 1717 1729 1999
  11. I swear, reading through many of the comments, a lot of people believe we live within the arctic circle. I remember many of the winters of the late 70's and 80's and believe me not a lot has changed. People bang on as if winters of the past were days of endless cold weather with copious amounts of snow. They weren't! Some perspective is much needed.
  12. Snowing steadily in Yate now, everything going a tinge of white. Hopefully more to come after dark. Edit. Massive flakes now!
  13. Sleet has turned to snow here in Yate. Edit-- and back to sleet! Edit- and back to snow!!
  14. We had the same problem here in Yate. Very cold and frosty when I woke up so I was sure that batch of showers moving in would be snow but it was rain. Anyway not to worry, I have a feeling this winter is going to offer many more snow opportunities, with many of the pros, not just the model output thread, coming to the view that this could be a cold and maybe memorable winter. Fingers crossed.
  15. Interesting, very interesting. Ian Fergusson @fergieweather Replying to @TheSnowDreamer @MarkyDub and 2 others ...or just a resigned acceptance that trying to sort varied UKMO cold-style hazard warnings plastered within my TV graphics may become a Groundhog Day affair into the coming weeks... 6:13 PM · Dec 28, 2020·Twitter for Android
  16. Ian Ferguson replying to someone on twitter- "or just a resigned acceptance that trying to sort varied UKMO cold-style hazard warnings plastered within my TV graphics may become a Groundhog Day affair into the coming weeks.." Edit. Sorry just noticed somebody beat me to it.
  17. One of the best ones I remember was here in South Glos during one of the cold winters of 2009 to 2011, I can't remember the exact date. I was living just north of Bristol and a cold dry evening and night was forecast. Around 8pm the radar picked up precipitation starting to form in the Bristol channel which steadily grew. Around 9pm heavy snow started falling in much of the North Somerset, Bristol, South Glos area. This continued for about four hours and ended up depositing around five inches where I was living. A classic streamer set up. This was just one of many snowfalls that winter in which we snow lovers were totally spoilt with lying snow for many days.
  18. I seem to be in the minority here but I love this time of year. The dark nights, the looking forward to Christmas and the hopes, often dashed, of some proper cold winter weather to come. If we lived in a place where a cold winter was almost guaranteed we wouldn't enjoy the thrill of the chase or the joy of when proper winter weather does arrive.
  19. I remember Atlantic 252. I used to listen to it all the time. A great station.
