B87 that figure would get your sunshine stats back on the right track though to not see a wisp of cloud somewhere in this country for a whole month would take a small miracle though I’m surprised it hasn’t happened or that the sunshine monthly record has stood for over a century, crazy, must be one of the oldest records yet to fall? I thought this country was slowly meant to be getting sunnier

Addicks Fan 1981 I checked met office anomaly and sunshine amounts looked just shy of average for here in summer but very wet pretty much everywhere in summer 2007

B87 the first half of May last year wasn’t reliably sunny but we still reached 247.8 hours, makes you wonder what a truly sunny month could get to? 350 hours? Has it ever happened in the uk? I know we’ve had some rare 300+ months

Can I ask what you guys mean about corrected values? Are the sunshine figures not accurate and under calculated on Metciel?

richie3846 probably in the 96% range like us in Exeter…not sure why met office do the white shading for 95% - 105% sunshine amounts? I’m all for being optimistic but it’s either below average, average or above, it’s misleading

In Absence of True Seasons I agree, I how it would be to live somewhere with proper seasons and had reliably sunny warm summers, lots of sunshine with decent spring/summer thunderstorms for good measure, some snow a few times a year, I think a continental climate would suit me better, I don’t know about anyone else

B87 well one positive is that you guys had 7 above average sunshine months peppered amongst some very dull months. Rainfall looks even more above average where you are last year. When I was calculating I came to the realisation that maybe we just have unrealistic expectations given we are in the north west quadrant of Europe right by the North Atlantic. We have wild sways in weather and a cloud magnet many times but when it’s sunny there is no where more beautiful than some of England's beautiful land, weather just lets it down a bit sometimes and the government a lot. Last year come May the weather did a complete 180 so hopefully the same happens again for longer

Ok well overall in 2023 Exeter had 112% of its annual rainfall and 96% of its sunshine (January,, May and June really boosted otherwise poor sunshine amounts) I have to be honest I’m actually shocked at the results…the reality felt somewhat worse that the above figure suggests 2023 January 82% rainfall 128% sunshine February 13% rainfall 87% sunshine March 165% rainfall 42% sunshine April 107% rainfall 79% sunshine May 85% rainfall 127% sunshine June 25% rainfall 135% sunshine July 205% rainfall 74% sunshine August 87% rainfall 88% sunshine September 199% rainfall 97% sunshine October 124% rainfall 97% sunshine November 115% rainfall 107% sunshine December 138% rainfall 73% sunshine 2024 January 58% rainfall 126% sunshine February 187% rainfall 51% sunshine March 188% rainfall 81% sunshine As for April we are about 20mm away from our April rainfall average which I expect we’ll receive more than that this weekend, some websites predict us 30mm+ this weekend alone. As for sunshine we have 60 hours of sunshine to get by next week to reach April average which given the forecast I just don’t see us reaching so I think it’ll be a wetter and duller month overall but I wouldn’t imagine huge percentage deficit, probably moderately so….so I guess that’s a positive given how some months have been. Lets hope May and Summer really makes us forget this wet and dull period

I’m actually going to work out the monthly percentage of sun we’ve received In Exeter monthly since the start of last year because I feel like I’m going nuts and imagining just how bad it’s been or have unrealistic expectations of weather here, brb! I’d be interested if others did it for their locations too so we can at least take some comfort that the prolonged dullness is not just in our imaginations and hope for the day when the tide changes to at least something average/fairer because I feel like we have well and truly been dealt the sh*tty end of the stick since last year.

AWD well if we receive the 2 inches of rain weather outlook are predicting by the weeks end that means we will have had another month of nearly double average rainfall, it’s honestly becoming like a sick joke now having said that we’ve not had much if any rainfall for 2 weeks and the ground has started to crack at allotment, this surprised me given how much rain we have received I thought the water table would be super high, maybe all the windy days dried it out quicker. I’m actually desperate to get my water collection water butts Installed by Friday at my allotment as I know at some point it’ll flip and we won’t see rain for weeks on end, Sod’s Law but I’m not going to mad about it

AWD I understand, 18c is above average for April for here but we usually do get some spring warmth by now, we didn’t last year and we haven’t so far this year either. But really as you said it’s the sunshine amounts we’re all craving after so many below average sunshine amounts and above average rain. I really think all of our weather fortunes will turn a positive tide come May and it’s going to feel wonderful

AWD Anything below 18c personally I do not class as warm and we’ve only reached that twice this spring but at least we have received some sun even though It’s going to take some more sun to reach aprils monthly average amounts than is currently forecast to reach. May is fast becoming the sunniest month here so can only hope it delivers

Nick L of course, looks like heavy rain Saturday….anyone getting excited over a late winter ssw next year I think I’ll go insane, 2 springs on the trot where it’s been cool, not warm and not even average sunshine, can only hope May saves us like last May

Weather Enthusiast91 it took until mid May last year to warm up too…That’s why some of us are frustrated baring on mind many of us have seen so much wet dull weather, much more than our fair share, it’s bad luck but we can only hope May the tide will change and we’ll start having lots of above average sunshine and warmth….the last couple of gfs runs have been hinting at better brighter days in May, hopefully many during summer

SunSean we’ve had some nice sunny weather, though a few of the sunniest days I was either working or sleeping after night shifts so the figures indicate more than I feel it’s been but it’s been dry! Surprised how quickly the soil has dried after just 2 weeks of little rain, it’s bone dry and cracked, must have been the wind as it definitely wasn’t heat related It’s kind of cloudy here now, hopefully it clears up again, hope it sods off and doesn’t stay over us all day, coming straight at us from the north,looks clear blue skies where you are Beka?

I know this is the conspiracy theorist in me but with all the rain that Dubai received recently I do wonder if some particular country has seeded clouds so that north west Europe has received shocking weather for months on end, there’s a few countries who don’t like us thanks to the powers that be
