  1. Park near me had rivers of water running through it this morning, very wet. MetO upgraded my neck of the woods to heavy snow @ 12pm and heavy showers between 1pm and 2pm. BBC says not.
  2. Quite why the Met Office haven't changed the yellow warning to rain I don't know. Just driven from Leeds to Pontefract and back and the conditions were horrendous, especially the motorway.
  3. Well it's going to be an ice rink tomorrow morning here in NW Leeds. It's hammering it down with rain and with overnight lows of -3c it won't be much fun on the roads and pavements in the morning.
  4. Currently in my part of NW Leeds for Saturday in to Sunday: BBC 6am - 1pm = Light rain 1pm - 3pm - Sleet 3pm - 6pm = Heavy Snow 6pm - 4am = Light Snow Met Office 8am - 2pm = Heavy Rain 2pm - 5pm = Heavy/Light/Heavy Rain 5pm - 7pm = Heavy Rain/Sleet 7pm - 9am = Light Snow Main difference being the BBC has it a degree colder than the MetO forecast, hence the heavy snow I'd guess....
  5. Also, what's the effect, if any, of that low moving back north with NE or ENE winds blowing off the North Sea?
  6. Can someone educate me as to what these show? I know it's fantasy land, but the poster in the models suggests these are good charts, but to my ignorant untrained eye it looks warmer than the current ones.....?
  7. It could be a bit wild on Sunday with low temperatures a brisk/gusty wind with snow showers. Looking at a 'feels like' temperature of - 7c with wind chill.
  8. If you go on to the BBC or MetO site and search for locations further down south where more snow is supposed to fall, there's plenty of places showing exactly the same sort of forecast as in my location (light snow showers). It's all a bit generic until they can nail down the details. That said we could still miss out, weather can be a funny thing
  9. Yeah, I saw the other day with the latest snowfall that predicting it outside of a 100% snowstorm is very difficult and they often get it wrong. In my area it went from being sleety rain to heavy snow just hours before it was actually due. They then said it would snow up until 11am/12pm, but it stopped about 9.30am as the front whistled through. Many people must have opened their curtains and wondered what had happened!
  10. When is the snow due to start? I have elderly parents and I usually drive from Leeds to Ackworth (Pontefract) on Saturday morning until lunchtime. Im guessing it's not due until Saturday evening still...?
  11. Given up reading the South East Model Thread There doesn't look to be an awful lot of snow about at the moment for Sunday/Monday, but still a long way out. I remember a few years ago the forecast said 'NO SNOW' but there was an snow machine somewhere and it just kept coming down. Hope for more of the same here in NW Leeds.
  12. Some gusty winds to blow that snow around come Saturday through Sunday. Could be nasty in exposed spots especially.
  13. If the snowline is north/ne then there's also some pretty strong winds and gusts of winds Saturday night through Sunday. Gusts up to 40mph through Yorkshire and over 50mph in the NW. Could be very nasty indeed.
  14. I've been in here a few years and I still can't understand charts to save my life, despite trying! Yet I do know the modelling thread is to be taken with a pinch of (rock) salt. Folk get way over invested over something they have zero control over, way in advance of it happening. And the weather being the weather makes predicting it incredibly difficult and best left to the experts, who are still often wrong! Still it's an amusement to view the modelling thread. More drama than an Eastenders Christmas special.
  15. Pretty safe to say there will be snow, but as always the forecasting of it in this country, outside of a sure thing, is often very hit and miss. Predicting where and how much based on changing models 4 days out seems a lucky dip. (Today we had 5" snow when the MetO predicted sleet up until the previous evening. They then said we'd have heavy snow until 12pm but it had cleared by 9am.)
  16. Very heavy snow in NW Leeds. Id say we have about 5" and it's absolutely barreling it down. The roads are entirely covered and you're not really going anywhere unless you have a suitable vehicle, having said that the 4x4 that just went past out house was struggling up the hill too. Downside is I was supposed to take my Dad to the hospital for an importnat appointment, so that's had to be cancelled :(
  17. Can anyone help me? I need decent records of wind speeds on the 8th and 9th of February this year in Ackworth (Pontefract). This was for during Storm Erik. I've found some wind stations on weather underground, but I'm not sure their recorded speeds are right. Can anyone help?!
  18. Walked through Woodhouse Moor Park in Leeds today at 4.40pm. Well over a hundred people laid on the grass, eating ice-cream, playing guitar, football and catching the sun. Really, really weird but nice - in a 'this is very, very wrong' way. This time last year the max temperature was just 2.6c, yesterday it reached 16.7c. (source Leeds Uni weather station)
