  1. Meto invent just updated. low reaches as far North as Blackpool then heads SE towards Derbyshire. No downgrade, looks to me a very intresting spell of weather. Mark
  2. In someways this event could produce pretty severe weather. There's a good chance this will the windiest spell of the whole winter here. Lots of precip some of which will be snow. Wed looks particulary nasty. Maybe a proper blizzard here something that was missing here over the winter. Mark
  3. Some data from TM a few weeks back, from British snow survey. The coldest villages in the N Pennines will have had well over 100 days snow lying. Mark
  4. Wasn't there an snow drifts left well into May around highest parts of the Manchester area Pennines in 95/96? 1978/79 has the record of days snow lying over high ground in England and Wales, far higher than this year. Mark
  5. Moderate rain increasing NE breeze. Temp 3.9C. Great Dun Fell was temp 0.2C at 1200z so should snowing above 700/800m asl. Mark
  6. Precipiation starting to turn sleety here. Going by Meto forecast it could be an intresting day. Wind picking up. Drifting should be a problem on higher routes in a few hours time.
  7. Fri could be interesting for high ground as a front pushes up from the south grinds to halt then cold air pushes Southwards all in a strong NE wind. Well that according to GFS? Mark
  8. 4/5 in here. Some drifting has taken place. Fri looks more interesting as colder air more South. Mark
  9. Updated Meto model much better for this area. The wind will be factor causing drifting at higher levels. Mark Meto less keen to push milder air further North than GFS. Meto Invent keeps upland areas below freezing all Wed. Mark
  10. Warning back up now. Invent model just updated appears precip hangs around longer on Wednesday. Still cold enough for snow higher up http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/pws/invent/weathermap/ regions:60% Northern Ireland 60% Yorkshire & Humber 60% North East England Heavy Snow 0010 Wed 24 1800 Wed 24 There is a high risk of severe weather affecting Northern Ireland and parts of northern England. There is the potential for heavy snow to give significant accumulations, especially over high ground. There is likely to be significant disruption to travel networks, particularly over higher level routes. Snow will gradually turn back to rain from the south later on Wednesday. Issued at: 1232 Tue 23 Feb Mark
  11. I'm going to go down to Meto archive this summer, I'll have a look at Forest in Teesdale records. D.S Burt paper says 78/79 was snowiest across N England/N Wales in 32 years at least. I think that when British snow survey started. Mark
  12. Great stats, where did you get them? Higher parts of N Pennines are significantly colder than those sites you have mentioned. Upper Weardale/Teesdale area will have been nearer 110/120 perhaps. I have a paper by S.D Burt (Snowfall in Britain during the winter of 1978/79) the only figures are 166 Days for Great Dun Fell, 202 Days Cairngorm, 200 Aonach Mor. Mark I know Gordon Manley thought that was snowiest winter at higher levels but that was written pre 78/79. Spring 79 was cold thats what extended the season at higher levels. Dont know what 1950/51 spring was like? Mark
  13. 78/79 beats 47/63 for number of days snow over high ground of Northern England and N Wales. At Forest in Teesdale there were 83 days snow lying in 1947 but probably over a 100 in 78/79. From the Midlands Southwards milder incursion meant conditions weren't as prolonged. Mark
  14. 78/79 is in a different league to this winter. At 155m asl in Co Durham there was 62 days continous snow lying. Overall total must have been around 75 days. Depths were greater and several blizzards made the condition far worse than this year. Mark
  15. Should be an interest few days ahead. Lets see what Look North goes for in a few mins.
  16. The M62 zone of Northern England has done well this winter. Further North we'be had to rely on shrs which can be hit and miss. You've probably had more snowfall than here. But because its colder in the N Pennines the snow has lasted longer. Lack of snow over last 4/5 weeks means the snowfall deviation from average will be less than many places.
  17. Well if 06z verify's it looks like the dry boring weather of the last month or so here will continue here. All the action is further South which has been so often the case this winter. Real lack of snow from frontal systems here. Could do with everything moving North 100 miles. Hopefully my luck will change.
  18. Glad some here are happy but bored as hell the last month or so.The models keep showing all the action to our South yet again. The good start to the winter has drifted into bland non description weather.
  19. A few flakes here aswell. Might have to wait till March for anything interesting. Feb has been pretty boring really.
  20. The second half of this winter has failed to deliver much in the way of snow bar the Northerly which effected more eastern parts. No wonder its quiet in here. Bar the odd few cm's in next few days there's nothing of great interest. Stats maybe coldest winter on many years but the gulf between this winter and the historic winters of the past feels huge.
  21. Dusting of snow overnight. The weather has been very benign for over a month now. A few light falls of snow, but still awaiting some severe weather, heavy falls of snow have been lacking here this winter
  22. Spot on. There has been more snow as you expect this side of Pennines. 45 days full snow cover so far but terms of excitement I would take 95/96 every time. Hoping for some severe weather on the next few weeks. r
  23. Amazing to think this winter could beat many winters in the 80's. The lack of severe weather hasn't made it memorable for me. Actually perfered last winter. Conditions were more severe at times here. Low min and lower max recorded last year. Although the snow depth was greater than last year drifting was less of a problem and snowfalls have been light/moderate in nature. Last winter had 2 days of falls of 20cm plus on a single day. Conditions have mostly benign through this winter, the lack of blizzards means I would take many of the milder winters for exciting weather.
  24. UK record snow depth in populated place is held by Forest in Teesdale, Co Durham. 211cm depth exceeding those recorded in Wales for over 2 weeks.
