Storm Forecast
Valid: Sun 10 May 2015 06:00 to Mon 11 May 2015 06:00 UTC
Issued: Sat 09 May 2015 20:49
Forecaster: TASZAREK
A level 1 was issued for N United Kingdom and Ireland mainly for severe wind gust and tornadoes.
Discussion
...N United Kingdom and Ireland...
Within trough approaching into Scotland and advection of cold air of polar origin in its rear flank, thermodynamic instability resulting from steep lapse rates (> 7C/km) and humid boundary layer (average mixing ratios ~ 7 g/kg) will reach 100-200 J/kg. Although free convective layer will be shallow (3-4 km), impressive mid and low level airflow will pose high threat for severe wind gusts of convective origin. Linearly organized convection within such environment cannot be also ruled out. High values of LLS (~ 10-15 m/s) overlapping with SRH 0-1 km ~ 150 m2/s2 will also pose a risk for tornado occurrence. Convection in this region is expected during the night and in the end of the forecast period. The highest threat for severe weather phenomena will fall on the passage of the cold atmospheric front (0300-0600 UTC). Due to relatively low and uncertain thermodynamic instability, the confidence of the forecast seems to be low.

A friend of mine said they saw lightning and heard a clap of thunder near Weston-S-Mare. Can anyone confirm?
Huh, strange. I was walking into the town (WsM) around the time mentioned by others and I never saw anything (didn't hear anything as I had my headphones in). I always miss the good stuff. :/
-
Short few minutes of hail just finishing here. Really tiny pieces.
-
Well, I believe we've got a "flood alert" for most of WsM - though I'm unsure where my nearest point of water actually is (where I'm based).
Then about 15 minutes ago (looking East) it seems the sky was starting to fall - and a rainbow was trying it's best to appear.
Once that has disappeared, it revealed these.

It does seem a tad bit chillier yeah. Even when I went to the shop yesterday evening around 1700 it seemed really nippy.
-
It's looking nice from the 1600z satellite pic.

Eastern edge of Weston, near the m5 junction.
Ahh cool. I'm near the Leisure Centre and Rugby Club (so kind of the middle)
Im right on the coast in Weston , and in that last shower it was snowing on the pier. So anything that falls from now on should be all snow
I'm hoping so. *crosses fingers*
-
Had large flakes here at times from this shower, still snowing and the sun is shining as well.
Edit : just stopped.
Which area of WsM are you based?
-
Finally, snow is starting to fall in Weston-super-Mare ... *yay*
Only lightly and small flakes, but still... it's snow. (Also I don't see it sticking as the ground is a bit wet from earlier)
[EDIT]
After posting the above, it seems to have pretty much stopped... only the odd little flake falling now. Well, at least I've witnessed snow for the first time in 2 years.

I can hear something outside, oh, thought as much... rain. Just plain ol' boring rain.
-
Well Weston is always the warmest place in N.Somerset!!
Not what I wanted to hear.
-
Just noticed this from the local newspaper's website, posted earlier, however in the article it says "Thursday" (so I'm guessing 15th Jan).
(Oh and they use that dreaded term "mini tornado" too *rattles*)
-
It looks like a Summer's day outside - sun shining, pretty much clear blue skies - although I think the neighbours would think I'm a bit tapped if I went out in shorts. :/
-
Back from ASDA... it's rain, rain and more rain. Oh and wind too. Besides that, nothing exciting else to report.
-
Oh no...is my video working on here?
Downloaded it and it worked. Lovely and bright lightning and lovely sound of thunder. Well caught.

report of tornado in London
Small tornado damaged a single story building and cars
1300 and 1315
-
Just had about a minute of hail about 10 minutes ago here in Weston, besides that, it's still fairly dark-ish and gloomy looking outside.
-
Absolutely outrageous. They've tweeted that to about 20 folk, just standard protocol it seems.
I know I'm hundreds of miles south of everyone in this thread, am all the way down in cider-land, I enjoy (trying) to help.Cheers to all the folk who've posted offering support on here by the way, the netweather community's invaluable at times like these
I agree PP, I was going to say earlier, the best thing to do is what you always see on American documentaries about tornadoes (yes, I know this isn't, but the principle is the same), stay away from windows, go to the safest part of the house (room/cupboard/closet) with no windows and use as much padding as possible (blankets, pillows, etc..) and wait the storm out.Assuming the roof has come off, they need to hunker down in the safest part of the house (which is normally underneath the stairs in a 2-storey property) with as many duvets etc as they can gather and wait for the storm to abate and help to arrive.

Does anyone know if the winds about to calm down, the police have said they can not get out n to get in the hallway n stay there till they can get them. (Milkmaids daughter)
The windspeed is on the decline... albeit *VERY slowly*:
1:50am - Wind: 79mph | Gust: 106mph | Pres: 973mb
2:20am - Wind: 70mph | Gust: 99mph | Pres: 977mb
2:50am - Wind: 66mph | Gust: 90mph | Pres: 978mb
But I personally don't know how long it'll be for emergency services.
-
The 1:50am (GMT) Stornoway METAR has came in with a Wind Speed of 79mph, and Wind Gust of 106mph.
Thoughts are with you Scotland.

I originally set this up to just show various weather types being detected - unlike XC Weather, which brilliantly does the whole lot - however with it being quiet (besides the odd few thunderstorms earlier), I've added the wind information on there now (if it gets reported).ok tks, it is on XC weather?
-
no Doncaster or Robin Hood airport it usually reports under=egcn
EGCN's on there, just isn't reporting any weather information at the moment, so it's on the "No WX data" page.

Just popped back from the shop (than goodness for the 24/7) and it's still fairly warm out - only wore a t-shirt - and it started to feel a bit clammy/muggy when I was walking back. Shame the storm(s) around Jersey look to be heading towards the wrong side of the country to me. :'(
