As Steve said earlier, this mornings ECM going for a high end Cat 4 at landfall.

These spells of 'very' RI have been a noted feature of Atlantic storms over the last few years and it looks to be happening again.  Laura will be going from a TS to a potential Cat 4 within 24 hours.  This is going to be making headlines for quite some time I would imagine!

It looks like Houston will miss the worst of it and at least according to the Landfall it won't any huge populated areas

We are not far off Hurricane status now as pressure approaches 990MB & the inner eyewall tries to complete...

For models to be forecasting cat 3/4 at this stage is always a bad sign as a rule of thumb they generally initialise to high on pressure meaning that the estimates are often on the conservative side- lets see what the GFS 12z initialised at later on.. Sub 995 would be ideal-

Indeed I think it wasn't supposed to become a hurricane till later on this evening

Most area and extent measures are showing a record low for the time of year. The latest volume update, to the end of June, had 2020 at 4th lowest, but it had undergone record fast losses in the second half of June, so it's probably close to a record low currently too.

The annual minimum extent isn't usually reached until September, but the trends in many metrics and the current forecasts lend weight to 2020 challenging the record low from 2012. Much can change between now and then, such as a switch to favourable weather for ice retention over the next 8 weeks, so it will be fascinating to watch how things unfold.

    Very worrying news indeed

Can only hope it can be slowed down

I wonder how significant this could be in the short term. Potentially a significant breakthrough if it works

Well it looks like I'll be able to work from for a little while.

Back to the Government their response is basically reacting to the changes and poorly at that rather than being proactive.

It's actually quite shocking with the actions today now I'm NOT a political person at all but the matter of the fact is if the government keeps this mindset a LOT of people are going to die

What I'm saying is if there was stronger measures like banning flights etc even a lockdown of sorts look at South Korea and Singapore for example

This is starting to get scary now and not to mention it's a matter of time

It would appear the 171 new cases released in the update were Scotland ONLY. Someone's published it a bit early by the looks of it. Expect a sharp rise once all the data is added later.

Scottish test numbers issued at 2pm today

A total of 4,895 Scottish tests have concluded. Of these:

    • 4,724 tests were confirmed negative
    • 171 tests were positive

I don't understand how they could make a error like this I just hope that this is the full number
