  1. I actually cancelled a social event for Thursday, even though it is in a pub. Used work as an excuse, but the main reason is if I am unable to drive and this thing kicks off nearby I wouldn't be able to forgive myself. Also when storms are due (or even a remote possibility) I find it hard to concentrate on other things. Already planning chase supplies: I have two cranberry and vodka drinks for my chase and a gin and tonic (only 1 is for me - the other two are for my gf to keep her happy if she wants to come chasing). I have enormous storm patience but she gets bored easily when there's no lightning... Also last time I took a pack of mini scotch eggs and beef hula hoops as a snack, amongst other things. Had no storms that night but I ate like a king!
  2. Sloped roof with a 3 storey fall onto a busy main road... Not perfect, but if need be...
  3. Well I am now free on Thursday and Friday nights to watch this thing - and also heading down to bath on Saturday for bbq so should be able to see something, at some point, somewhere! The next few nights are 'get all my jobs done so I don't miss the action when it happens' nights. That - and getting excited watching developments :-) I don't care if that makes me uncool - I love it - bring on the storms!!
  4. Unofrtunately my office window looks out towards NWW. Anything sliding up from the south is obscured by a wall and a hillside. So planning ahead where I'll be placing myself if something starts creeping up towards the central southern coast Exciting times to come, I hope!
  5. well I ordered a second hi-speed SD card off amazon and hoping it arrives by thursday or I'll be off down to WHSmiths to buy an emergency one! Not having camera no. 2 out of action when and if the action kicks off...
  6. Bit worried our area is brewing and exporting at the moment :-( Stop taking our clouds London!
  7. Got this coming over They seem to get more threatening looking each time
  8. Sweepstake on what time the first sferic on the UK mainland will be, anyone? My punt is 16:22 Edit: going by blitzortung :-D would do but camera is downstairs in the van ATM
  9. I'm happy with towers shooting up. Anything else shooting up outside my window I would probably call the police
  10. http://www.dus.com/dus/webcams/ There's an ominous funnel shaped object in the distance, may just be an optical thing but made me wonder a bit. Awesome storm they have there, not seen any forks yet tho
  11. Anyone know if 60fps video gonna be enough to get some good frame-by-frame lightning strikes? My newest camera (the one I use for video now) has 1000+ fps slo-mo feature but the resolution is quite, quite terrible. Also does 400 fps and that's slightly better, but still not brilliant by any standard. Still, could be interesting. Finding that long exposure can't handle the big-uns too well, as I discovered in the last storm - unless I'm lucky and it goes off just at the right time. This time I want to get some nice crisp shots. My main camera is 5mp - which is the one I use for the long exposures - wondering whether that's enough. Anyone else avid storm photographers and know a bit about best camera specs and settings etc?
  12. I now have an arsenal of 2 cameras and a perfect position from which to view the storms as they cross over our little valley. Only one tiny thing I still need to make the setup complete - a thunderstorm ;-) Hopefully tomorrow will provide this, and failing that friday or sat. But tomorrow night looks pretty good from what I've seen so far...
  13. Got to be half an hour or more of lightning from the same cell for it to be a storm in my book. Get frustrated when people say "we've had a storm" when there was only one flash. Trade descriptions!
  14. Well at least you haven't been pumped up with excitement over 'thunderstorms' when even 'thundery-rain' isn't a likely possibility. Just naff. I have better things to do than chase imaginary one-strike storms. The one we had last month made me realise it's proper-storm or nothing - so yes these false forecasts are annoying. Sorry to any forecasters out there I'm not angry at you - in fact not angry at anyone - just frustrated with exciting looking but ultimately weak-willed clouds.
  15. What a waste of a storm day. Went to london and there was probably more thunder in the Arctic. So I leave godalming for a few hours and a net gets sucked up into the sky - but seriously so what? France got amazing storms and none of us did if we are honest. Some may say bitter - but I say brutally honest.
  16. Left godalming for london ad got huge rain storm there. Now hopefully you understand my frustration ;-)It's clearly me that has the shield - not godalming
