Been a bit of a thunderyawn today. Lots of cumulus with the right look and potential, but - like the England team - the performance is lacking. Saw some really fast growing towers over central London earlier, but they just fizzled away eventually. Would be nice to be surprised by something later on but not counting on it ;-(

Should this no all be in a new thread - convective discussion June 23rd onwards? Just tricky with 49 pages an' that

Am I missing something here - warm out, lots of acas which i suppose to mean there is instability and looks very similar to a fortnight ago when we had big storms. Is tonight definitely going to be storm free for the Surrey area?

I'm ready and waiting for anything convective - got my new camera with 1200 fps video mode :-D Looking potentially good for next week with a more unsettled theme... Anyone taken a look at the science charts?

I want a stormy outlook to get excited about !!!! But not too soon because I'm waiting to get my new camera :-)

Looks possibly good for around the 22nd and again for the end of the month. Eastern and central areas so it seems...

Your best unexpected storms.
Flash bang flash bang etc replied to Lauren's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Gotta be the one last Friday! Admittedly the forums on Netweather had mention of sonething possible but I honestly didn't expect for us to have any thunder at all, let alone an all-out storm. I went storm watching down at Devil's punch bowl first and could see flashes but that was from a fading cell over Portsmouth and feeling like we had lost out I headed back and thought I'd get one quick look from Guildford. Didn't expect to see another cell develop to my north and as that faded the monster moved in from the NW and gave the best lightshow I've seen for about 10 years! -
BBC forecast plays down anything happening at all tonight other than 'the odd shower'. Then again they seem to be denying anything happened last night so I'm keeping an open mind...

I went right down to the Farnham roundabout and realised there that I was heading into the storm. There were forks dropping over towards hook way every 5-10 secs so I went round the roundabout and headed back up toward Guildford. There's a lay by just before the Godalming turn-off and I set up there for 10mins. A few tall bushes there but with the right angle/ height/ tripod you can get a good shot across toward the north/ NE. Bit high up and exposed for a direct hit so went home to watch the action after that :-)

I don't do any prep but last night was a little unnerving as tere were flashes all around the horizon but no way to know what the clouds were doing above so I felt a but better when the storms got closer as I knew where they were and they lit up the underneath of the clouds overhead so I could sort of see what wa going on. The only thing I prepare is a raincoat and a tripod!

Was weird last night cos I went to the Mount in Guildford first and could see a storm way off over Berkshire area but the forks were clearly visible. However I had a pang of nerves being so high up ad not being able to make out the clouds nearby so for safety I got back in the van and headed off.Got to the Hog's back and realised I had miscalculated the direction of the storm... It was heading right for us! Got out and got a few shots but this time I let the storm get a lot closer. What's weird is I felt safer even though the storm was much closer than before, dunno why this is.When I got home I knew that even a direct strike on the houses over the road was unlikely to hurt me, although it would probably have made me lose control of my bowel! So I had the window open and was leaning out and the strikes were all around and right overhead - but I felt completely safe! (I did have a glass of wine so maybe that helped!)I think the slight danger is what makes storm chasing so exhilarating... Each storm makes me less nervous too - 15 years ago I wouldn't even look outside during a storm

here's my haul from last night I did a bit of shopping and cropping but only on the colours and sharpness, the rest is exactly how it happened! Missed a spectacular double strike tho. Was sticking my head out the window for a moment to get a good view of the next flash and as luck would have it there were two CGs touched down right in front of me! I nearly wet the bed! Anyway got a couple of classic shots will be going in my storm montage 2014! Lets hope everyone who missed out last night gets something later on :-D

All gone now. Seems to be dissipating over the channel. Was an awesome storm - all the things you would want - pink and bluer lightning and plenty of forks . Reckon ther'll be some reports of direct hits tomo. Bed now. Happy with what we got tonight - was cool!

Thunder gone and lightning movin off to the south. However, seeing flashes to the north west and think that's the MK / Aylesbury cell moving closer. Part II? :-D I have seen a lot of CG / straight liner strikes this evening, are these more prevalent in homegrown storms?
