  1. looks like it could be finishing soon, and it has been a full snow event here with no rain. road outside is tricky, and this is the main route to 50% of the town.
  2. AND the chaos continues, cars abandoned, roads gridlocked, still heavy snow, and that all at 150 to 180 ms imagine what its like higher up, in the Peak District.
  3. fellow midlanders come to North Derbys for the snow, looks like some of the schools could be closed, total white out now. as usual side roads and most od the B roads have not been gritted. could this be a total snow event here, only turning to light rain late afternoon ???
  4. moderate snow here now, everthing white over, looks like its going to be quite tricky on the roads for a bit.
  5. What about this - 1990 (December): 1. A low formed dramatically over central England on the 7th, large quantities of RAIN, turning in many places to SNOW, fell on its western and northern flanks. On the 7th and 8th very HEAVY SNOW fell over northern England, Wales, the Midlands and south west England, with heavy drifting in GALE FORCE WINDS, causing considerable disruption to traffic and cutting power lines. The snow did not freeze, however, but melted very rapidly during the next few days, as the temperature rose a little. By late on the 8th, many parts of the Midlands had 20 cm or more of LYING SNOW, Acocks Green, Birmingham reported 42.5 cm on the 8th. The Peak District had 38 cm at Middleton and 25 cm at Winksworth, while in Newcastle under Lyme 28 cm was recorded, and many other places had more than 20 cm. DRIFTS up to 60 cm on motorways in the Derby area, and at Carlton in Coverdale, near Leyburn, a report of 240 cm. SNOWFALL on the 9th in the Dorchester (Dorset) area in 1990 was the heaviest pre-Christmas fall in that area since 9 December 1967. 2. A notable outbreak of TORNADOES on Christmas Day, when a number of tornadoes were reported between Devon and Lincolnshire. On the Severn Bridge (the only one extant at that time), a GUST of 92 kt was recorded on the 25th. On the 29th in 1990 a WHIRLWIND caused extensive damage to houses in South Wales. Now this is the sort of December i would like, from a selfish point of view.
  6. i agree with M B, i can not remember the last time tempratures here reached double figures, my old cheap weather station has recored 8.2 one day but it has been months since it reached 10c. Quite staggering really, becauce over the last few years ( ignore the even larger teapot era theme) there has always been some winter days that reached 11 to 14c with odd year getting over 15c.
  7. it fell to to minus -7.1 here in the early hours and a high of 3.5. while washing the car this morning at 11.00am the water froze on the drive, and stayed frozen all day. looks like it may get even colder tonight. currently - 0.8. Frost stayed on most fields out out of the sunshine.
  8. well still looks good for here for some snow today. Been out all morning in the Peak District, crikey miles and miles of snow fields. Even quite a few roads are still white over, and the small B roads and C roads are only passable with care, especially around Parwich, Biggin, and Newhaven. Some of the snow in the village car parks is still 5 to 8 cms. So for us lucky few in West Derbyshire with some ellevation i can see another 5 to 10cm tonight and tommorrow (hopefully)
  9. whoa good covering here. 12cms from this event. did;t tell kids so they will be pleased this morning. Best thing was being up at 5.00am to watch the first few flakes fall. temps were -3.8 so it all fell as snow and settled straight away by 5.30 everywhere was white over with thin cover, went back for 40 winks So when i woke a 7.00am (although kept looking out of window between naps) it was great to see a thick covering everywhere.
  10. just about finished here for now, unless i get a rogue shower later. started at 4.53am put down 12cms. just been for walk. All roads are covered even the main A6. good event really, lets hope theres more this week
  11. sure has been a nice morning, looks like i've got plenty more snow to come. I think rugby training at 10.00am will be cancelled. To be replaced by sledging .
  12. Hooray, just started here now, 4.53am god what am i doing up at this time. temps -2.7 and snow flakes are quite large, falling on to solid frozen ground instant white covering, best way for snowfall to happen. As i type it just gets heavier.
  13. well, just got back from hammering Preston 5 v 3, and i definately would say i live in the East Midlands, or North Derbyshire, anyway looking good for some snow here over the next few days, most of the town is at 150 to 250 metres. Also when i left Derby it was dry as a bone at 10.30 but theres been a rogue snow shower here giving a light dusting on the grass and cars. But this morning the snow line on the hills around here was at about 200 metres and some cars had over 2 inches of snow, most of the fields were white over. I heard on the radio that Snake Pass was passable with care. So all in all looks good for the rest of Feb snow wise that is.
  14. uick postfrom work, although i only live 5 min walk away from home. moderate snow here for last 30mins just starting to settle on the car park.
  15. continual snow now, driveway is white over again, so is the road outside where the 4x4's had worn tracks
  16. light snow been falling for most of the day but nothing really settling, temps fallen back from 2.2 to 1.3 at 3.00pm. Just been onto the fields and must admit its still over 6 inches of level snow. changed from all dry powder to more sticky stuff, but its better for building with.
  17. well experience from the past ie 70s and 80s tells me that the mild temps and mini thaw will not effect North Derbys, where i live we just have enough elevation and being in the centre of the country we tend to hold on to the cold surface temps longer. I remember a few yeras ago maybe in the 80s not sure, but after a cold spell the atlantic weather systems tried to move in and on the second or third attempt the mild air reached Stoke. they had mid day temps of 4c but over the southern pennines here we held on to -1c, it only reached 1c plus in the afternoon so the heavy rain crossing the counrty fell totaly as snow here, achieved unbelievable amounts. I think this may happen this time round when the atlantic eventually forces it way in. the embeded surface cold over the snowfields will be hard to shift. My comments may not be scientific and i'm only going on past experiences over the last 35 years, but this cold air is going to hard to shift. B)
  18. well yet another snow shower here, really been continous all day, if tommorrow pans out like the met off warnings then theres going to be some serious accumalation in these parts. Looks like as the ppn moves North West and comes up against the Southern slopes of the Pennines starting at say Ashbourne northwards then i;, confident that the ppn will intensify. Should be enough lift over the eastern slopes to give the 15 to 30cm that the met off warn about ( although only 60% )
  19. currently have my 7th snow shower here, this been ongoing for 15 mins quite intense. Just seen the Met O Update for warnings. OMG, Derbyshire has now gone orange, possible upto 30cm in hilly areas, and upto 15cm of new level snow, yes car,nt beleive it another 15 to 30cms. No grit left here so looks like tractors only from Monday morning (HA HA) ALSO noticed the wind is getting up now and its really blowing around
  20. another heavy snow shower, big flakes again. This is the 5th shower since 7.30am, crickey at this rate its nearly continual snow falling, wow as i type its got really heavy.
  21. Hi, I;m in Matlock, just walked down to the town centre for some newspaper. those showers out East have really pepped up. When it snows heavy Riber Castle and surrounding hills dispear, temps at -2.2 so no thaw. What falls is settling and accumalating. You must have some good snow depths in your location.
  22. WOW, This is slowly turning into dare i say an epic snow situation, snow cover had shrunk down to 9cm, but last nights heavy showers and the four heavy burst this morning have the snow on the garden table back at 16cm, and there looks plenty more to come from the showers out East, pretty impressive becauce i live right in the middle of the coutry. all side roads white again to maybe a depth of 5 to 6cm. Even the main A6 was thick with snow slush and white bands down the middle. Looks like the council have finally run out of grit ???
  23. moderate snow falling here, must be another 2cm and its still snowing steady.
