  1. Thinking the Welsh mountains could gobble up the worst of the rain here in the south of the region. Looking horrendous for north Lancs & Cumbria though. Hope you guys up there stay safe.
  2. Only had two very light coatings of snow this Winter - both of which melted after about 2 hours. At least in 2013-14 the only covering we had all Winter one evening in the February lasted until the next morning. So for me this Winter has been the worst I can recall around these parts. Still a couple of weeks to salvage something a bit better but even it did this would still rank as one of the poorest. Both in terms of snow & frost. After a chilly & promising end to Autumn things quickly turned sour into Winter.
  3. Well after light covering of snow first thing this morning which was gone by about 10am it would still be nice to get a thicker covering that lasts longer. Meanwhile storm Dennis on the way but he doesn't look as strong as Ciara.
  4. Depends where you live too. If I recall you live near Flixton? Probably one of the least snowiest parts of Gtr Manchester given it's close to sea level. I worked in Salford & there was loads of times when it was snowless there but a covering of snow at home here in Oldham. But even here I'm noticing the lack of snow. Next Winter could be colder than average but there's no getting away from the fact that things have warmed up. Look at the Met Office maps for snow cover & frost. There's a definite trend to milder. And I think when the maps are updated again in the future we'll see it go further still.
  5. Think I'm done with this Winter now. Today just rubbed more salt into the wound. If we get a snowy March then great but after this garbage Winter I wouldn't bet a lot on it happening. We'll probably get a warm one like 2012.
  6. It is bizarre that the showers are hitting the buffers half way between Northern Ireland & Isle of Man. This has been a consistent thing in that area since last night.
  7. Unfortunately it takes lots of pieces of the puzzle to get a notable cold spell these days. Obviously going off this Winter low solar activity isn't the most important factor. It's very telling that somewhere as high as snake pass (510m) has not even been shut because of snow this Winter - not once. Most probably a consequence of the climate gradually getting milder. I remember lots of times in the past when it was frequently shut for days at a time.
  8. Think everyone is baffled Kev. Seems like everything is going against us. Just when things are right synoptically speaking it's as if someone's cloud seeding above the Irish sea.
  9. I think it'll be too marginal again tonight. Air temps look like being just a bit too high for any settling snow below about 300m. Could be wrong but it's just not going to be cold enough.
  10. Had a real mix of snow, ice pellets/hail but no proper covering. As I look east the tops of the hills have a slight cover. Probably last chance saloon tonight?
  11. A warming climate means Winters like this one will happen more frequently. Winters are definitely not as cold or as snowy as they were when I was growing up. (Born in the 1950's) Okay it was never like Canadian or Russian Winters but they were for sure more wintry compared to these days. Something has changed & it's steadily going in the milder direction.
  12. Snake pass not shut at all this "Winter" sums up how diabolical it's been up to now. If somewhere that high up (510m) cannot even get a good covering just the once we're screwed in the future.
  13. Looking good for northern members of our region. Thinking the Lakes will get a good dumping tonight. Think I'll log off for a bit as it's like pulling teeth here at the moment. Good luck everyone.
  14. Yorkshire Dales getting a good pasting of snow judging by the radar.
  15. Can someone tell the Irish sea to bloody wake up?! A sugar dusting doesn't cut the mustard.
  16. Still looking good for high ground but for lower ground I just cannot see any accumulating snow. Could be wrong but I reckon air temps will be a tad too high. Dews are conductive for wintry precipitation but any snow on lower ground will most likely be wet.
  17. Monday night/Tuesday morning coming into view on Euro4. This is as far as it goes up to 1am Tuesday morning. According to this the Peak District & Cumbrian fells have about 15cm of snow by then. Of course it's best to be sceptical with these charts as we know they can be wildly innaccurate!
  18. Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday the Peaks buried in snow. At this rate probably be avalanches when it melts
  19. Getting gusty but not too bad yet. Looks like the real fun & games begin during the early hours onwards.
  20. Feb 1991 was great here. Slightly better than 2018's two beasts. I was knee deep in it here in 91 so on the Pennine summits it must have been easy to the top of the legs.
  21. I think early next week is looking too marginal for low ground. Even 200m looking a bit iffy. It does however still look extremely good for ground 300m plus. Buxton area & the Pennine passes in particular looking very snowy with frequent heavy snow showers & gales giving blizzard conditions at times.
  22. At this moment in time it is looking extremely snowy over high ground early next week. The likes of snake pass could be absolutely buried. Potentially serious conditions over these trans Pennine routes. Heavy snow plus gales would bring large drifts.
