  1. It has crossed my mind that this *might* have been deliberately put in China to try & decimate it's population with huge reprocussions on its economy. America doesn't like competition. Having said that obviously with world travel it can get elsewhere including the US.
  2. Approaching squeeky bum time this Winter with time slowly running out. Never thought I'd say this just 6 years down the line but this Winter is up there with 2013-14 so far round here. Still a few weeks left to surpass that awful statistic of just 1 brief partial snow cover. And if we get a colder than normal March that will suit me just fine. Snow is snow whenever it comes. March can more than deliver. And anyway light levels in March are still not long enough to sit out late into the evening enjoying a few pints with company. The warmth can come in April.
  3. That's nothing too unusual there on the Iraq-Turkey border. It's over 4000 feet up as well. The climate there is a tad different than Baghdad which sits inside the Arabian desert.
  4. Certainly a good chart with less marginality than earlier this week but typically it's 10 days out. No doubt it'll change to something milder closer to the time.
  5. Had a light covering late on Tuesday morning on the grass, bin lids, car etc which melted within an hour. That has been our lot so far this Winter.
  6. Woke up to 5 inches of snow during that Easter. Was a really nice surprise. A good half of it melted away through the day once that late March sun got to work.
  7. Depends what you class as special. To get this sort of deep cold like we experienced in Feb 2018 I would call special. Especially these days with a changing climate & cold becoming even more rare to get in this country. Even the middle of March brought another onslaught & another dumping of snow. So at least 2017/18 brought a couple of potent cold spells. Better than probably anything we saw between 1997-2008.
  8. Only had a light dusting on favoured surfaces which was gone within an hour! But at least it's not been completely snowless. Hopefully we get something more substantial before Winter & Spring is out.
  9. No point in posting them all as they're not good but pretty much all the models on meteociel showing a mostly high ground event in the morning (300m+). I'm afraid it's looking very marginal for us below that high altitude. But they've been wrong before we'll see.
  10. Yes still too early in the evening for anything particularly wintry. 3am onwards looks to be the best shot at snow opportunities - especially as we are due to bring in a w/nw flow around then introducing the chillier Polar Maritime air. Might set my alarm for 5 or 6.
  11. Indeed. I'm not on FB, Twitter or anything like them. Most people on them are addicted to getting likes & comments & pretending their life is better than it really is. I don't read the news very often either. I'm convinced the rise in anxiety & other less severe mental health conditions are to do with reading too much information that's now available to us these days. We did not evolve for our brains to be bombarded like we are now. Life was far simpler just 20-25 years ago.
  12. Well I'll take this. Shame it won't turn out that way. Met Office one not looking as good. A mix of rain & snow.
  13. I'll take this one for round here. Although XC get their forecast data from GFS which exaggerates snow potential.
  14. No panic stations from me yet. I think the government is right about the low risk given we haven't *officially* had any confirmed cases here. Obviously if we start to get a lot of them then it's right to up the risk level. The only concerning thing if that happens is how the heck can the NHS cope with people needing a bed? It's already stretched now as it is.
  15. Wouldn't be surprised if it's already been in the UK for a week or longer. Let's face it the authorities aren't always transparent with us. People that have it could have been misdiagnosed with flu or a different respiratory illness.
  16. Cold isn't unheard of in Florida. Especially northern parts of the state. Tallahassee's record low is -19C would you believe. Obviously in tropical Miami where coconuts grow it's more rare but even here frost has been recorded in the past & snow falling but not settling. Orlando has experienced settling snow in the past. The only place in the contiguous US never to record an air frost has been Key West in the far SW of Florida.
  17. Would be interesting to see sunshine totals this Winter. Could be me but I think it's been extremely dull. At least with wind & rain you get sun in between systems.
  18. Yes around the 28th has been showing this possibility for a couple of days now. I guess the unreachable dangled carrot had to come sooner or later.
  19. It was a great snowy period. Blackpool got around 40cm of snow back then. Pretty unusual to get 1cm there on the Fylde coast but to get this much was something else. My brother was living there at the time & he said he couldn't get his car out for 3 days.
  20. Yes mentioned this event the other day in the regional thread. Had plenty of trees fall on the lane here. Certainly one of, if not the worst storm I've experienced here. Had gusts to around 90mph on my anemometer. It was like a storm they experience in the western & northern isles of Scotland.
  21. -5.3C here this morning. Dense freezing fog out there at present. Finally at least a bit of a wintry feel to things.
  22. Well if we get a February like 2018 it would compensate for the poor Winter so far. Although earlier in that Winter we already had a couple of snow falls. One light covering was technically in Autumn at the very end of November though. But nothing compared to the end of February. And then another 2 decent snow falls around the 1st March & 17/18th. So can February deliver the goods? I'm not bothered if March is cold as well. The days are still a bit too short to sit out in the evening. The warmth can come in April.
  23. Not had a storm as bad since the January 2007 one. Had close to a dozen trees brought down on the lane here by that storm. My window panes were literally creaking with the strength of the wind. My anemometer recorded gusts close to 90 mph. BBC NEWS | UK | Nine dead as UK struck by storms NEWS.BBC.CO.UK
