The July 1987 Greece heatwave was one of the worst and probably just as dangerous as this current one. It was over 40c then for a number of days.

Don’t think many Brits would be cancelling a Greek holiday in the summer of 1987, when we were witnessing a truly dire run of cool summers.

Summer 1980 in the USA was probably even worse compared to this current heatwave in Europe. The daytime highs were regularly hitting and exceeding 35c-40c.

    It’s all happened before.

The heat haters just love to latch on to the fact it’s becoming dangerously hot, because they hate the heat, and want everyone else to live in a world where it’s damp and cool all year round.

The 1936 July / August heatwave also in the USA is unprecedented of which many records still stand today. The town of steele North Dakota recorded 49.4 degrees on July 6th along with Alton in Kansas also 49.4 degrees which are still the hottest temps recorded in the contiguous  USA outside of the desserts  , Bismarck exceeded 38  degrees from the 5th to the 12th with 3 of those days reaching 44 degrees .Altu  in  Oklahoma averaged a max of 43.2 for the month of August and Ozark in Arkansas topped 38 degrees for 20 days in a row during the month.  Towns in Texas were over 38 degrees from July 12th till Aug 27th.Even Wisconsin had temps over 45 degrees among many days over 40 .Many states suffered and night minima of 33 degrees  must of been harsh when air conditioning was non existent with giant ice cubes placed in front of fans and people sleeping outside. Nothing like it has come close and that's how people coped. The media would be in a frenzy now but this was 87 years ago.

This happens because the mainstream media are using weather and climate for political reasons. I can post 10 pages of the lies spread by mainstream media regarding the southeast Europe heatwave starting with the Guardian. Inaccurate temps in every single article, fear mongering, they should be ashamed all these journalists. As a Greek living in UK I have all the sources back in Greece to destroy every single "news" from the Media about this heatwave.

It's an absolute disgrace what's happening and it would have been hilarious if these "reports" weren't affecting people's livelihoods. As it is, they're destroying tourism, a lot of people are cancelling their holidays because "omg you're going to die at 42c".

Yes, there's a heatwave and possibly a prolonged one. It happened before, it will happen again dozens of times in the future. We all need to use our brain and common sense. Turn our back to the fear mongering media, we're individuals with critical thinking and suddenly the majority are relying on a nanny State to tell them what to do.

Yes it was laughable when the main bbc news report yesterday on the heat in Spain .The reporter  finished his report  saying the south of Spain was becoming an extension of the Sahara desert a MAN told me..(WHAT MAN).. Reliable or what..

I like winter when it’s either cold and bright and calm or snow.

I hate the constant damp that permeates everything.

Nostalgic rose tinted glasses I’m sure, but I remember days in my youth where you would have snow or ice on the ground and it would be calm with bright sunshine OR you would get freezing fog which would be really atmospheric.

Nowadays it’s just windy and wet and overcast the whole time.

I think another issue I have is for the past few years, winter seems to have clung on far too long or only got going once spring arrives and that’s super tiresome.

I agree  and  reminiscing   really do remember wonderful winter days with  the pouring water from buckets on the slope of the church across from our house  and dozens of high spirited teenagers    and allsorts sliding down the wonder of our instantly rapid freezing slope bringing exceptional joy and happiness which was normal for me in the 1979 to 1987 period as a boy to a youth ..Those days are long gone for now..

I used to be a labourer on building sites, hot weather was fantastic to work in. I also worked on digging the roads up for gas and water, where we go paid by the metre. I also did landscaping for 15 years, building fences, turfing, paving etc. Sunny, hot weather was amazing! You could fit two winter working days in to one and so it was very cost effective.

Cold weather doesn't bother me in the slightest, but working outside in 25 - 30°C was where it was at!

Wish I could do it all again to be honest, best days of my life.

I am a landscaper and from an early age chose to work outdoors . When hot and sunny weather is  on tap it is the most gratifying.. I thrive on heat.. There is a Quietness on the streets.Hot sunny days are rare for me so the last 3 weeks have been heaven and when you have to have the sweat towel out  it is good times being out in type of weather our continental neighbour's mostly used too. I love all seasons and every weather type and although we might have a boring climate we can love the extremes and at least for my occupation! Can work all year round and have bonus days off when we lucky ..(snow ..wind ..rain ..red orange warning..love it..

I've had a few friends and family members visit Santorini etc and they never mentioned any strong winds, and they've all shown me photos of them eating outside, having drink/food on the beach etc.

Not sure if they just got lucky or you got unlucky with the wind situation, who knows.

I'll give you a shout re any recommendations for restuarants etc! I'm not doing Santorini but probably Naxos, Paros, Koufonisia and maybe Milos.

I was there in 2007 in July and it was calm with heatwave warning for most of greece and temperatures were 39 degrees on the island our volcanoe trip was almost cancelled and our flight home was delayed until midnight as they said the runway was too hot.. Or Ryan air possibly made that up..It was some heat though even the hotel pool didnt give relief..I think Athens recorded 46 degrees that week and it was during the tewksbury floods in this part of the world
