  1. @Don Indeed. I am so tired of that old chestnut which has been cropping up almost every day on here over the last couple of months.

Back on topic, I have a feeling that at some point during Feb will provide us with another cold spell before winter is out. Winter does frequently arrive back with a vengeance after false springs. :cold-emoji:

  2. I do a like a good cosy storm every now and then, but it has happened so often this winter that it has now become boring and I want a break from them. Hoping February gives us some more crisp and sunny weather. Snow would be nice too.

I'm still looking for cold charts until early March, but if we get to the last third of February and no cold on the horizon, I then make the switch. Probably the only exception would be if we got a holy grail synoptic, like 20C and sunny. I would enjoy that, despite how ludicrously unseasonal it would be.

February seems to be turning more into a spring month these days. I wouldn't be surprised if we see another 20C day in February at any time in the next few years. Becoming more commonplace as the years and decades go on.

  4. I like weather to be seasonal in all four seasons. So I am not a fan of warm autumns just as much as I'm not a fan of cold springs. But here's a general summary:

Late November to early March - I am interested in cold during this period. By the time we get to March my interest starts switching to more springlike conditions, though I am still happy for it to remain wintry during early to mid March.

Mid March to end of May - Fully in spring mode now and no longer interested in cold. During this period, I like it to be mild or warm with sunshine and showers.

June to early September - Warm or hot sunny days with thunderstorms is what I am interested in during this period. Much like with winter lasting up to mid March, I am happy for summer to last up to mid September though my interest does wane as I begin the transition into autumn mode.

Mid September to mid November - I have lost all interest in warmth by this point and start looking for something more autumnal, though that doesn't necessarily mean unsettled unless it's a good storm or two (not constant mind, like during this winter). Mild or cool sunny days with chilly nights is what I am mostly after during this period.

What worries me about this extreme mildness is that it not only affects mid-winter, but potentially spring also due to nature going out of sync, as I've said.

We desperately need a cool (but not wet) March now. A 2016 re-run for the next four months would be by no means the worst outcome.

I personally find that prolonged false springs more often than not seem to lead to mediocre at best springs. I'd much rather have spring like days during the actual spring when the daylight hours are longer and to keep nature in sync. Winter also always seems to arrive back with a vengeance after a false spring, which is a shock to the system for not only us but also for nature.

April 2021 synoptics during March would be good.

Appears the chances of a cold February are now fading so looks like another winter down the tubes is likely to be on the cards for cold seekers, despite a couple of cold weeks with disappointing snow event for most!

This is why I don't hold my hopes up anymore when it comes to cold. It almost always gets watered down, pushed back or cancelled altogether.

Milder than average on the other hand almost always verifies.

Just hoping for a decent August for a change!

August 2022 was decent, though I do agree it would be nice to have another decent one as there haven't been many decent Augusts over the last 20 or so years.

Since 2004, only 2016 and 2022 stand out as being decent.

  8. I am going for a largely unsettled March, then an April of two halves with it being quite cool and unsettled during the first and dry sunny and at times warm during the second, then a largely warm and settled May with thunderstorms later on.

Very frustrating that the deep cold over Scandinavia is going to get blasted away by the Atlantic next week!  It would seem that February is looking less promising for cold weather fans now?!  Those of a milder/warmer disposition have never had it better and this is likely to continue in their favour moving forward!

Hardly surprising really, given that February seems to be more like a spring month these days. It would be nice for once to have February as being the coldest month of the winter.

  10. Another beautiful sunny and crisp winter's day, despite an air pressure of 992mb.

I don't understand the moaning to be honest. Yes, snow would be good, but what we currently have is still miles better than what we had throughout last month. In the UK, sunshine can be hard to come by all year round, yet alone during winter. For that reason, sunshine is never boring.

    And it's dry.

  11. Am I the only person who is enjoying this current coldish spell?

I agree that it would be more interesting if there was snow, but cold and sunny is the next best thing in winter if we can't get snow. I am also thankful that it is dry for a change after weeks of gloom which dominated throughout last month.

  12. Definitely not. Whilst cold spells are still very much possible and happen at some point in almost if not every single winter, what is considered as cold now was once considered as fairly mild. This current spell for example is on the cold side for today's standards. But 40 years ago nobody would have thought anything of it and would have just got on with it.

With the way things are going, we'd be chasing frost let alone snow.

Come February we can and often do see the first spring-like weather with temperatures into the high teens with sunshine. That’s what I’m looking forward to now. A repeat of February 2019 would be appreciated.

    No thanks. 🤮

I will of course be wanting spring weather come early to mid March, but despite what many on here seem to believe, whilst being able to give us spring-like conditions February still isn't a spring month. It is a winter month just as much as August is a summer month. Not a fan of unseasonal months personally, whatever the time of year.

I do appreciate that I am probably in a minority. 😁

June 2023, July 2018 and August 2022 is ideal in terms of how those months played out in my area.

Book-ended by May 2020 and September 2023 for good measure 😎

I would be very happy with that. 🙂

    Particularly after last July.

Properties in the Nottingham/Lincs area are still waterlogged, some of which haven't flooded in a hundred years, they're not all beside rivers.

I haven't mentioned any freeze, deep or otherwise.

RE: guilt tripping. As there are near daily whinges about heating bills, directed at anyone who hopes for normal winter weather, and have been since about last November, it seems odd that one remark about flooded homes should instigate an accusation.

Exactly this. I am personally tired of hearing that old energy bills chestnut. What about having to use the lights more during those mild and dull spells? Or having your home flooded with water? Funny how those things hardly ever get mentioned. In regards to the energy bills, I haven't been using my heating any more than I have during the mild and wet December just gone. The sun being out makes a huge difference, even when it's cold.

I like cold winters and I will never apologise or feel ashamed for it.

    Rant over. 🙂
