Winter 2022/23 - Moans, Ramps & Chat
Empire Of Snow replied to cyclonic happiness's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
"Pretty good end"? I'm from Greece originally and this is one of the worst winters snow wise I've experienced in my whole life. -
Model Output Discussion - Into February

The biggest issue is that GFS has lost all its remaining credibility. When you have hundreds of amateur meteorologists saying for 3 days that GFS will not 99.9% verify and the people running it don't care there's a big problem. Yes I know, GFS got right some of the features, but this is not enough. GFS is the "go to" model for many, especially the ones like me that have more than 20 years of model watching. It becomes a habit. That said, I'm almost really done with it. I'll keep studying it here and there but right now I'd rather watch CFS for fun. I don't also care about summer and if GFS verifies with the bloody African subtropical anticyclone. Sorry if it sounds like a rant but it isn't really. I'm just stating the facts. -

Yes the other models are definitely feeling bored watching the GFS show. They might come on board in the morning to join the fun. -

You can't compare summer to winter weather patterns. It's always easier for most models to forecast the west African subtropical anticyclone. -
Thank you. I didn't know that. Rebs Abbo shared the photos but he's in Wolds. I can't see there more than 10cm, maybe 15cm? Yes, it can happen with a stream of organised bands of showers. A proper snow event for me is 20cm+ with continuous snowfall 12h+. I'm coming from a place where snow events are coming from Ls and last 48h-72h and in big events we're talking about around 4-5 days of non stop snow. My standards are a bit higher unfortunately.

Yes but we're talking about showers only. Why do we expect a decent event without a proper meteorogical cause? I see all the time the line "have the cold first and everything will follow", this is so overrated. The same applies to an Easterly. We need a proper setup. All these years I'm in Harrogate the best snow events occured when we had a low depression, when fronts were stalling, when organised troughs came through from NW. Sometimes people think that the Irish Sea or the North Sea are the Great Lakes or something.
