Major Hurricane Ian.
Empire Of Snow replied to matty40s's topic in Hurricanes, Cyclones and Extreme weather worldwide
It's always the case with hurricanes like this one. Another aftermath is that the sea temperature dropped around 10c which is quite impressive. -

I'm certain Max has the full video. I haven't seen him commenting about the resident(s) of the house. This probably means that the outcome wasn't good and out of respect he decided not to say anything. As you said, life comes first. Everyone needs to evacuate to safe areas under this kind of hurricanes. There's no way you can save your house or whatever. It's also so strange to me that all these people that move to certain parts of Florida take these risks. Don't they know they'll be in danger a lot of times? Different mentality than us maybe? Whenever I had to move houses inside UK I was always checking and avoiding flood prone areas. -

This is the most shocking storm surge video capture I've ever seen. At 0:05 someone at that house opens the door and then goes inside again. I really hope whoever was inside there evacuated the area but I have a bad feeling this wasn't the case eventually. -

Vince Waelti is right now streaming from the centre of Punta Gorda. Whole area is without electricity of course. -

Yes, kinda like a tornado inside the eyewall. Rotating wind gusts. -

It's a palm tree. They can survive up to 165-170mph gusts I think. I'm afraid the catastrophe at Punta Gorda will be devastating. -

Wow. This is absolutely insane in Punta Gorda. -
It's bizarre it didn't blow warm air earlier! These fans are ok for temps around 30c and some brief relief. After a while they just circulate the warm air that keeps on building inside the room. This is why places in Greece and Spain use fans that also spread a bit of water droplets making it more fresh.

32.8c max here so far. it's getting breezier and cloudy. Humid night incoming. As I've mentioned before this is the main issue, humid and warm nights. I know there's a microclimate factor in Harrogate but METO forecast for max T was a bit off. At least the amber warning was justified, no need for a red one here.
-
Good call. I was thinking to do the same but decided against it and sent all of them to school for 2 reasons. Firstly, we come from a Mediterranean country and our children are quite used to high temperatures. Secondly, I predict that max T up here won't go above 35-36c in this heatwave. 39c or 40c makes a big difference.
-
Just for reference, here is the 1987 heatwave in Greece that killed around 1300 people in Athens. Max temp was 41.9c which isn't extremely high for Greece but the event was prolonged and the main issue was the max temps in nights. Humidity and night temperatures are the most important factors for the elderly under a heatwave. List of heat waves - Wikipedia EN.M.WIKIPEDIA.ORG METO for now believe that relative humidity will be quite low, the Amber warning is mainly for activities and night temperatures. If something changes there will be a red warning tomorrow with schools and public services shutting down.
-
Current charts show that the extreme temps aren't going to last more that 1 and a half day. The amber warning is justified. Old people with underlying problems must seek cool places and I hope local councils are informed so they can provide these. Fortunately this looks like a brief heatwave snap and not something prolonged. Could have been much worse. It's just a heatwave, we might have some records broken but nothing extraordinary. It happened before.
-
Exactly my thoughts. Even though I'm from a country where we're used to heatwaves in the summer I can't understand why and how people over here find this kind of weather enjoyable. Humidity is through the roof, 90%+ homes don't have ACs, the same applies pretty much for workplaces, it doesn't make any sense tbh. I can deal with temps in low 20s, max mid 20s, but everything above these is just unbearable.

Model Output Discussion - Autumn arrives

Sorry for the slightly off topic post. An amber warning almost 6 (!) days before it's very concerning. I really hope none of the charts verify. -
Spring and Summer weather moans
Empire Of Snow replied to Community Team's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Why a very windy day with gusts over 50mph here is described by METO as "breezy" in their text forecast? Am I missing something? Just over a month ago they were issuing yellow warnings for the same conditions. -
Model Output Discussion - Early Summer and Beyond
Empire Of Snow replied to mushymanrob's topic in Forecast Model Discussion
If we had the dry, warm weather and above average temps of 2 weeks ago in April, wouldn't be down to global warming again? Don't get me wrong, I understand your point but we seem to overreact because our lives are affected. If we go back in meteorological records we can see the same weather patterns occurring in 1930's, 1960's etc. Spring is a transitional season. When people in Greece face a cold, snowy period in late March they know it's normal and they're not surprised by it. Why a cold snap and some wintry weather over here in UK in April makes people moan constantly is really bizarre from a meteorological point of view.
