Sigh... weather and climate are 2 completely different things. Can I predict the weather on August 4th, 2014? No. Can I predict though that it will be warmer than today? Yep, with almost certainty. That's the difference.
Sigh.. That sums up your blinkered arrogant attitude Magpie..

I'm sick of being fed lies about one thing or another. I WILL be making efforts to find out the infomation for myself. The difficulty is seperating the facts from the drivel.
I would just like to add that whether GW is caused/accelerated by the human race or not - we all still have a duty to keep the planet clean, continue searching for clean renewable energy sources and stop raping the planet of it's resources.. My concern is that we will switch off from the whole GW thing and become complacent with regards to looking after our beautiful planet.

Hi Jono and welcome to this excellent forum..
I am very much of the same opinion as yourself. The problem is definitely separating the facts from all the agenda driven drivel and for that reason I didn't watch the programme last night and do not often get drawn into these threads for that reason. I am quite happy sitting on the fence for now, but feel that the things you mention about our duties to this planet need to happen regardless of GW/AGW.
On the face of things it is fairly clear to see that temperatures have risen/are rising and there are plenty of graphs and data to back this up back as far as the 17th and 18th Century. My main problem is that we are dealing with such a young and underdeveloped branch of science where things are far from cut and dry. We cannot accurately forecast the weather more than 5 days in advance, so how are we going to fair any better trying to predict 20,50 or even 100 years away? To my mind there are just far too many variables that influence climate that we haven't yet taken into account..
Evening everyoneYes we should amend our ways, a cleaner world is better for everyone, thank god we don’t all burn slack on our fire at home any more, who wants thick acrid smoke to breath in, I do my bit for the cleaner planet by cycling 5 miles to work everyday, and recycle as much waste as possible and that includes 100% of all my garden waste, back into my own garden, we all want our children to live on an unpolluted world.

Nice post Paul it pretty much sums up how I feel as well.

really! thats a lot.
do u think this will be a ongoing trend for all the months to follow?
We have been on a trend of above average months for quite some time. Last March was the last below average month I believe, although August was fairly close to average.
As for how long it will last, who knows?! A lot depends on how active the atlantic is over the next 6 months. If it continues in the same vein of continuous low pressure after low pressure and summer is a washout then perhaps we are with a chance of a below average month. My hunch is that this will not happen and we will have a similar summer to last year, without being record breaking, but that is just my hunch..

surly temps have been above average in some places already!
They have to the tune of 1.7C above the 30 year average...

The current N-W UK tracker figure for March 2007 is: 7.49°C
(difference from average March CET is 1.19°C)
CET: (Mar 1- : 7.2°C (+1.7 degC)
E&W Rain: (Mar 1- : 40.5mm (215 per cent)
E&W Sun: (Mar 1- : 42.0hr (169 per cent)

EDIT: not quite sure how the smiley's appeared..

Yes I was just going to post that myself! Whilst last night will have nudged Phillips figures up quite considerably, I can't see it catching the tracker, even a CET of 11 for today and last night would give around 7.2 and thats without todays tracker rise. We had a similar situation in reverse last month when the tracker fell away far more sharply than Manley before the figures started to coalesce mid month.
Today sees slightly less disparity in the results:
CET: (Mar 1- 6): 7.1°C (+1.7 degC)
E&W Rain: (Mar 1- 6): 45.8mm (324 per cent)
E&W Sun: (Mar 1- 6): 28.1hr (154 per cent)
c) Philip Eden (If you wish to use or copy these figures, please acknowledge the source)
The current N-W UK tracker figure for March 2007 is: 7.38°C
(difference from average March CET is 1.08°C)
As Mr Data has already pointed out we have had exceptional rainfall already this month. It is also interesting to note the trend for above average temperatures, above average sunshine and above average temperatures continues...

The current N-W UK tracker figure for March 2007 is: 7.16°C
(difference from average March CET is 0.86°C)
CET: (Mar 1- 5): 6.5°C (+1.1 degC) c) Philip Eden (If you wish to use or copy these figures, please acknowledge the source)
Quite a reasonable difference between the NetWeather Tracker and the CET from Philip Eden's site.

So the triple-6 record goes... by a whisker.
Ian - I haven't got to grips with what is seen as the "official" figure. Is this what appears on the Met-Office website?
-
The Net-Weather tracker came out at 6.07°C..
CET: (Feb 1-28): 6.05°C (+1.85 degC) from Climate-UK, C Philip Eden.
Happy with how it turns out regardless of whether it ends up being 6.0C or 6.1C

Stick me down for 7.5C please.

Ooooooh - it's so close...my punt of 6.0 *might* make it the first time my guess has been spot on (after being out by a country mile in January). Come on baby, just level off a little...
Looking close for the few people that went for 6.0 and 6.1. This is the closest I have been since I nearly fluked the July CET last year..

Morning all,
CET: (Feb 1-18): 4.8°C (+0.8 degC) © Philip Eden (If you wish to use or copy these figures, please acknowledge the source)
The current N-W UK tracker figure for February 2007 is: 4.74°C
(difference from average February CET is 0.54°C)
I am not going to enter into the mathmatical debate, but feel that I stand a good chance of being quite close with my punt (6.1) this month.

The current N-W UK tracker figure for February 2007 is: 3.72°C
(difference from average February CET is -0.48°C)
Climate UK is currently CET: (Feb 1-12): 3.7°C (-0.3 degC) courtesy of Philip Eden.

Same on top of my 1 inch of snow!!!!!!! Which is not 1 inch now ... Right you lot where can i go north that is still snowing and has more than 1 inch for me to visit??
Hiya! Head up the A34 towards Newbury and stop off at Beacon Hill..
-
The netweather radar shows that SE Birmingham to London is now rain - that's not true is it? Can anyone confirm. My BF needs to drive down to near Heathrow this morning and it's taken him nearly an hour so far to get over the hill at the top of the parking bay.
My boss told me not to expect a day off regardless of the weather so I need to start out in a few minutes too. Bah, humbug - I want to play in it.
Cheers.
Jo
Odd that! the sleet, snow, rain seem a little too blocky to be realistic IMO.
I am south of the M4 in Newbury and it is still snowing here quite hard. We currently have about 8cms here.
-
Errr....no it's not.
The pennines run across the spine of the country from Derbyshire northwards towards County Durham\East Cumbria up to the Borders.
I know exactly where the Pennines are PP, but thanks anyway for the geography lesson! I was making a reference to someone saying that there would be no laying snow south of the Pennines...

Lancashire mate
nice one

Ah im getting depressed. We've still got very fine and fairly thick powdery snow driving down, but it must be on the way out by now. The radars are all suggesting the main brunt of the snow is starting to get beyond me here. Bit to come, but probably scaling down.
Stall goddamnit!! The clouds are doing their best around here to pep up on the spot, but im not sure theres too much more to be had. need a few follow up waves.
Sounds very similar to what we have here at the mo. My suspicions are that is all for the heavy snow, but all eyes on the radar in the hope of being proved wrong... by the way anyone know where the Pennines are?
-
I'm not going to go through the last thread but I can only assume that large parts of southern England now have snow given what I have currently?
Snow here about 3-4cm deep. I am presuming that Abingdon (15 miles away to the north) has some too...
-
Good Morning all!
Started snowing here at 03:00 ish and is still going strong, albeit smaller flakes now. Off out to build a snowman!!
-
Hiya - it was at 3.8 last night.
I think this is where taking only 1 min and 1 max gives a slightly higher reading than a tracker, because in a generally cold day there's usually just enough 'thermality' fleetingly to lift the maxima up.
As posted above the Net-Weather tracker is now 3.41C
-
WIB seems to have stopped posting his daily updates on the CET progression, the potential IMO for further cold shots later in the month with the jet on a southerly course. Could we get an average to slightly above month ?
In which case I will post the 2 that matter:
The current N-W UK tracker figure for February 2007 is: 3.41°C
(difference from average February CET is -0.79°C)
CET: (Feb 1- 6): 4.2°C (+0.2 degC) © Philip Eden (If you wish to use or copy these figures, please acknowledge the source)
I suspect that the widespread overnight temps and this morning will have a bit more of an impact on the CET on Climate-Uk.

Devonian - you and Magpie obviously didn't read my post. I am not an idiot and appreciate the difference between weather and climate. I do not appreciate being patronised about it by Magpie, but unfortunately that appears to be the attitude of some people that predominantly post in the environmental threads.
I understand it perfectly thanks..
