  1. I agree with some others that 2022 was pretty much the best you can probably get for a spring and summer combination in England.

March to early September was a mostly sunny, warm and dry affair. May was warm and dull but all the other months were sunny.

There are definitely better springs like 2020 but I don’t think we’d have a spring 2020 followed by a summer 2022 or 2018 or if we did it’d be a once in a lifetime event. It’s just not the climate.

Actually I think I might be mistaken. 2003 looks very similar to 2022 if not better by stats but I don’t remember it.

  2. Being in the midlands we get a mix of both northern and southern features.

Summer 2020 is remembered for having intense heatwaves surrounded by weeks on end of dross. It was a very dull summer but 31 July was phenomenal considering how it sprung up out of anywhere and early August was extremely hot but was very wet, cool and dull afterwards.

Summer 2021 was more benign in comparison. There was no notable heat but it had a nice first half of June and a normal heatwave in mid July. Late June/early July was very wet and August was a drab, dry, dull month.

I’ve never before seen that app show such extremes. Even when one of the main computer models throws out extreme output. Wonder what model it uses.

God knows! I don’t doubt it’ll downgrade later as we don’t get temps like that round these parts (at least very rarely) but it’s definitely looking promising for a colder spell!

  4. The late 00s/early 10s was clearly a notably cold era but does anyone know WHY?

All the winters between 2008 and 2013 had notable cold spells but it wasn’t just the winters either. The summers of 2011 and 2012 were notoriously cool and it was near constantly cold between April 2012 and June 2013.

Then just like that from July 2013 we never saw anything like it again until Winter 2017-18.

  5. What is the hype about 1976? This one is mentioned by the general public and not just weather enthusiasts but you never hear of 1995 even though I’m fairly sure it was drier and had a hotter July and August, or July 2006 which is the hottest month on record. 1976 was an impressive heatwave but it wasn’t the ONLY impressive heatwave clearly as stated in this thread. It’s really strange.

Whilst January is rarely renowned for sunshine, it tends to be sunnier than December and a good chunk of November, and therefore should be welcomed.

High pressure and associated sunshine tends to have greater staying power in Jan than in Nov or Dec, but in recent years has been lacking in Jan. This Jan is looking to be very different..

January has been unusually sunny recently. I can’t recall a sunny January before 2022 and then we had 2 in a row. Hopefully it turns into three!

Spend a long time on this board you will soon learn its all talk and no show! Don't get major interested until it's within 5 days and excited when within 2 days

This! For the first time since I’ve been on this site (since 2020) I’m just not bothered about looking on the MOD thread for this reason. Any sign of cold is a historic deep freeze and it ends up as two frosts and perhaps a fleeting flurry.

OMG thats rubbish , but becoming more typical,  sad.

It’s weird to think what era you grew up in could influence the way you view seasons. I was born in 2001 so grew up in a period of cold and snowy winters from 2008-13 and was flabbergasted by the snowless 2013-14. I used to think snowy spells happened every winter!

  9. My predictions for 2024:

January - a chilly month, quite wet with multiple minor snowfalls.

February - a mild and wet month, little of interest.

March - very mild first half, cloudy with mild nights, then colder with snow showers after the equinox.

April - cold and wet to start, warm and sunny middle, cold and wet end.

May - Mostly warm, dry and sunny with a notably hot end.

June - very wet and cool, a stinker month.

July - poor start then a hot, dry and sunny month with a few thunderstorms later in the month.

August - mixed with an intense heatwave in first half, average second half.

September - mostly warm and dry with intermittent wet spells.

October - average but dry for the first time in years.

November - mild and very wet.

December - mild and wet in first half, cold and dry in second half, notably so in the last few days.
