  1. I'm not as complacent about the future as you are. I also feel responsible for what I do, and I know that if, (as a species), we were both more responsible, more grown up and more intelligent we could all live happy lives without needlessly and carelessly polluting the oceans, land and atmosphere and needlessly despoiling the biosphere beyond recognition. I can't just wave that away I'm afraid.
  2. Do you notice the sun fluctuate and the climate follow it? No, you don't. Does the sun's output vary? Yes, by tiny fractions of a percent - it really is a middling star of steady output and thankfully so.
  3. It should be obvious this thread isn't about when the sun nears the end of its life? I meant that the effect of changes to the solar cycle (s?) on climate is minimal over the time scales we are talking about viz years, decades, centuries.
  4. Gael F, I highlighted this part "There was a theory somewhere, that the SC is affected by gravitational effects from the planet's within the solar system," because its bunk. You've replied with a paper talking about a solar effect rather than a planetary one. I wont be using the word bunk for that as the sun is the big thing in this solar system. How big is the sun's effect on climate, or volcanoes? It's small but, maybe, non negligible.
  5. Is bunk. Or, rather, is an effect like that of a pound coin in a pocket has on the length of a human lifetime.
  6. It's ever more clear that if humanity carries on as it is that people after us will live on a very different , far more degraded, planet. That is awful to contemplate - I've understood the basics of climate science for a long time, decades, but for us to actually be where it said we would be? Well, firstly several decades have past (how time flies) an the science is thus being shown to be right and secondly, gulp How this madness will be averted is increasingly less clear to me - indeed I fear humanity is reacting to what is increasingly obvious by doing less not more about it. I thus get what drives people towards XR. Sadly, XR people are part of the 'elite' in that they are educated and thoughtful and humanity is headed away from that and instead listening to those who pedal lies, fantasy, anti-education and anti-science.
  7. Perhaps they need you as a leader? How about it?
  8. Weirpig might say they should march on Beijing...
  9. I just don't get why people sneer at those who do their best. Do you want people to be quiescent sheep?
  10. The number of people like four is going to decrease, simply because the evidence is going to keep on increasing. The question is not if but when the world acts. Trump, or other populists, can rant but as time passes what is going on will just get clearer and clearer to humanity. How much damage will be done before humanity 'gets' it? Sadly, awfully, terribly, I fear it's a lot more. End of the world stuff? Nope. I do wish I were like four - that every bit of evidence was just more proof it isn't happening because, well, it's just a bigger and bigger conspiracy. Then I would post in a style like his and be utterly complacent with it. I could scoff at those who are concerned, point out the odd hypocrite and thus futrher bolster my self belief. But, again, he's wrong. He'll never admit it but he might, just, come to see it yet.
  11. No, look at the graph, three scenarios...And do read the article I link to.
  12. Yup, it's an anthropogenic effect. But, do you know how much of the UK is cities?
  13. Yes, climate models have been amazingly accurate. Even Dr Hansen's climate model from 1988 (30 years ago) is doing very well compared to observations,
  14. It is destroying and it could eliminate - no inconsistency imo
  15. She is a close member of my family - you think when people talk about close family members it's mere 'anecdote'? I told you the truth...
  16. Well, the one I'm related to has worked her guts off in the NHS until 'retirement' (though, at aged 64, she's still working two days a week) and now has been on the XR protests in London. If that fits your stereotype so be it....
  17. Freedom of speech and assembly - who needs it eh?
  18. What is an 'ordinary' person? I see this term used quite often these days, is it some special, better, new sort of human being? How can you tell an ordinary human being from a human being?
  19. You do what you can... What do you do? Have you been to China to protest and if not why not? Isn't China a big polluter because people elsewhere buy it's products? So, isn't there another way???
  20. I suspect if they did 'go over there' you'd be criticising them for all the CO2 they were responsible for in getting there. Criticism delivered from a computer chair is a 'heads I win, tails you lose' kinda thing...
  21. You're plumbing new depths of insouciance....
  22. Yes, in a way it's sort of like the reverse of the famous 'blue marble' of Apollo (17 or was it 8?) days. Our waste is everywhere, from the very depth of the oceans to the very top of the atmosphere. And yet some still don't think action is urgently needed.....
  23. Geoengineering without addressing the source of the problem is (I'm afraid) a cover up. It's a little like using perfume to mend a broke sewer...it's a symptom of the point blank refusal of most of humanity to do what is needed.
  24. As per usual, not an iota of evidence or data - just the conviction that comes from deeply held cynicism.
