  1. Fingers in ears, singing 'lalalalalala' as loud as possible while the planet approaches burning point.
  2. I have a special reason to be vitriolic. I've been off here for a while as my son got hit by a non-electric car while cycling to work. Lucky to have his head in one piece.
  3. Look at the impacts of climate change. We need to wean ourselves off cars and soon, amongst a hundred other things, or we're all screwed. (Some one tell Putin too, preferably with an ICBM.)
  4. Christ on a stick. You have heard of the little word 'change' haven't you?
  5. The showers we had in the middle of the day were of big blobby rain - definitely a sign of spring which is quite a relief. Tomato seeds will be sown tomorrow.
  6. Two old codgers after breakfast: 'Bit windy out...' 'Oh I thought it was Thursday!' 'Well let's have a cup of tea then...'
  7. Nuclear isn't clean by any stretch is it? How much CO2 is produced during the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant? But the point is that they're not as polluting as coal and gas, so maybe part of the mix. Although proponents of renewables like solar, wind, hydro and tidal will say that with more storage, these sources will be enough as long as enough projects are built. But there'll always be folk who seem determined not to change. I was... now I've got a grandchild.
  8. That's from Paddy Lowe, about two thirds the way down the article. I've driven my share of miles using diesel and petrol-engined cars and bikes over the last 40 but I think we really need to wean ourselves off having such resource-hungry machines. There's no single solution to this but a change in people's mindsets is part of it. For example, if I want to shop at a cheap supermarket, it's a 25 minute drive each way, or a 25 minute bus ride plus 10 minute walks at each end. I got my pensioner's bus pass a while back but I still have to remind myself which way to go.

  10. It's so mild and damp here that the car windows were misted up inside and out this evening. I can't remember when it was so mild.
  11. 1.5C and recent rain. Not even sleet. I would expect anything else with the current profile.
  12. We have tiny bits of snow left in shade just around the village and it's now freezing again. I think there'll be a decent cover over most of the Black Isle away from the immediate coastal strips and south-facing slopes, although it'll be thin so unlikely to last beyond tomorrow. I've been trawling the few uncorrupted memories I have left of winters from 25 years ago and trying to pick out similarities and differences. The number and duration of the cold and snowy spells doesn't seem that different - bearing in mind that every winter is different. But what is different is that it's been several years since we've had a run of ice days (so snow doesn't hang around so long) and several years since we've had a really heavy drop of snow that's been seriously disruptive. From maybe 15 years ago, going back, we'd expect at least one heavy drop most winters. Our boys were young then and snow days weren't unusual; we'd be out with the toboggans locally; and inland walks would be in winter wonderlands. Just my twopennyworth.
  13. Temp just creeping up now as the cloud thins slightly, and the snow turns to liquid. This is March in the Scottish Athropocene for you.
  14. We have a recent dusting - the radar looks loaded but that always deceptive for here.... edit - ok, it's on again!! Just got to keep those wet baws cold enough now
  15. We had a narrow band of what looked like small, angular icy fragments that could have been hail pass through a couple of hours ago. Now dry and a stiff (Mandy) northerly breeze making it feel RAW.
  16. Weather Underground is your friend... Our local(ish) station reports temp 5C and DP 5C too.
  17. Eased off considerably and brightened up in the last half hour. Doesn't quite fit with either BBC, MetO or radar. No, really.
