  1. Drama indeed! I think Lomond this is the bit I can't quite understand, I have very limited knowledge of all the various parts which make up weather, but in my simplistic view, I can't quite see how the block can be totally obliterated just like that? perhaps amore middle ground between the two, but what would that be? who knows it's intersting watching for sure
  2. Clouding over here now already, what's it like up North Pete, Gilly, NL? >>Model thread don't like to keep mentioning it, but that was a new form of low - I'm thinking it was no more than frustration and a slack "no mans land" between doubtful runs (re the E'ly) which let the trolls in and unfortunately caught some unawares.. needless to say I have 2 more trolls members on my ignore list PS: I think I now see a snow shower just over to my West and yea Huntly traffic cam is showing it too PPS: thanks as usual LS, appreciate reading your summaries, & looking forward to this evenings round ups
  3. Nice charts GraemeB! Quiet sunny morning here with a nice deep covering. Yes Pete, I think it's looking good for you & Gilly et al for this evening/tomorrow morning Good Luck!
  4. ah that's good, I won't tell you about the rest of my day then, as it would only make you even less jealous Nice reply LS! all I can say is what a day! ran out of weather superlatives a long time ago.. but we're here [home]. Road is NOT clear, no amount of clearing was going to do that today, car is not here, most drivers are nutters (and we haven't even got the length of the really bad stuff yet apparently!) was at a meeting earlier an feel the need to use bullet points for emphasis: SS you make me giggle CMD, no I've never seen anything that blue, I've led a sheltered life yes it's still snowing sure you will all see it again soon in 10 days time I'll check again yes I've been drinking mulled wine, that's what socialising in winter is all about, isn't it?
  5. Lots of blowy/snowy showers this am, just as DS went out to school it became a blizzardy style whiteout, bet he wasn't best pleased Last night around midnight with around 2inches of new cover it then turned to rain fort about an hour, which then subsequently froze allowing the new powdery to lie again, but also making the driving conditions absolutely treacherous, worse than the great big dumps as the ploughs could not beat the wind or traffic.. DH says lots more cars of the road this morning than in the last spell in all there's still about 2" cover but obviously harder to guesstimate this time because of the blowing! like Northern Lights said it was all that was missing this winter, however it's not likely to be nearly as pleasant - Still snowing and blowing at present the tail of that curly swirl does look somewhat like it might clip Aberdeen, going by fate probably right around teatime rush hour? - look out!!
  6. Quick report, but will be back tomorrow.. driving home at 5pm through very wet sleet, have just finished work and looked outside there is about an inch of the white stuff lying on all surfaces.. trees are white again already, thought it would take a wee bit longer than that to lie after how wet it was earlier! temp +0.6C DP 0 PS: it is still snowing, and it's very wet stuf
  7. <--- signing back on for the roller coaster - and another to add to Scottish Skiers prediction method haha.. it's actually quite true SS, I may not read all of the model thread but just watching how busy it is can be an indicator all of itself - and I lolled when you said that Great chart and the positively balmy here too, though it's now very windy too, temp sat around 8c all evening and almost went into double figures (9.6c) this am at around 7:30am. The NAE is showing snow (north/central) from as early as thur/fri is that right, or mainly high ground only? - and I'm reading about a warm sector somewhere is that still on? Have been doing a fair bit of driving this week hospital visiting and driving over the Learney (Torphins) it was always white and/or snowing, in other words it was still never very far away. .. was reading the model thread last night, after reading here first of course! so thanks LS and others who keep it real for us - looks like there's definitely something brewing again - so I am off to get loads of work done in case I need some snow days at the weekend or next week! excuse if I don't chat until excitement gets too overwhelming, gonna work hard so I can play later - but I am reading..
  8. Morning All, A lot gone here too, still big piles though, higher up behind the house on the other side of the trees which is directly exposed to the SE it's very green and our wooded area is saturated.. the neighbours weather station is situated there and recorded a wind gust of 47KTs earlier 4am.. and is still averaging 23kts. In other words real windy.. and is also pouring with rain. Our and many front gardens still have total snow cover - it's west facing and is sheltered from the winds - and though the rain is trying it's best to remove it, don't think it's moving too far yet.. which is not a bad sign re: the old wifies tale that it could be waiting around for some more  Worse.. tree branches came down and snapped our Sky cable  small child not amused so DH & I got well and truly soaked and froze our fingers off temporarily rejoining it.. not a pleasant day out there at all!!
  9. Evening folks, sorry broke one of my rules of not reading all previous posts first so I apologise if I'm repeating.. .. that is an amazing photo of the Funicular - thanks for showing the scale!! - I suppose it's really hard to understand how different this winter is ALL around! - it's a bit (loose connection!) like me digging and digging our access road, done it heaps of times before - though this year it's on a much grander scale., weeks as opposed to days We're "used to it" apparently, and I presume by the digger/blower photos that you are too (well at least you're prepared for the "just in case" ).. ONLY for us all (even those further south) it's possibly X 3-5 magnitude perhaps? - PS: don't bite if those figures didn't quite happen in your area please .. We here still have total snow cover too, despite the thaw, which is not surprising given the amount - 50cm at peak cover - -though tomorrow may well bring yet another different picture. The novelty/weirdness if you like, here the last couple of days is that the greenery, tree, bushes etc.. have been green again, that 's the biggie (and I unfortunately remember some of the "winters of old" though not quite '63..) I cannot remeber when so much snow stuck around for so long.. We, despite being a few miles inland from the coast DO NOT have the ice packs that are being so widely commented on.. I believe that is also because not all areas are being compacted by unnatural means? - there is a path through the park which has been walked for the last month which is ice ice baby.. but the park's snow level (i.e, the uncompacted bit) is still as deep - the "thaw" or mother nature has kept it all in balance.. now to me that's what has been missing for the last few years.. PS: anyone peeking their heads in, just to see.. there have been winters past that we may have had a couple of inches (or more for a short time), but were to scared to report/photo/enjoy the fact because "it was expected" here - so please let me take the opportunity to say that if you want a pleasurable Forum experience, accept what you have is because of you live, it's not a competition that you're going to be able to score points from or be remembered becasue of.. no matter which year you post! We have a saying in Scotland (well in these parts anyway) that what goes around comes around.. that pretty much sums up Mother Nature doncha think
  10. Thanks Paul, Admins, Mods & all other powers that be !! And thanks LS after the model thread I came here hoping you'd done a summary for us before 12 and I find a great summary and the good news that we are to survive to chat another day.. PS: the handbags were definitely uncalled for this time, is there any wonder us lesser mortals are scared to post in there Nite All, see you in a shiny new forum and thread
  11. ** Warning big quotes post as I better get them all in before midnight! ** :cray: hehe, I personally will just have to stop reading so much, never mind taking part.. I come here for fun and banter, it's a hobby and when there's nowhere to go to get away from the SE bias, tayher than get annoyes I usually find it easier to log off and try a bit of DIY charting ditto! I don't either, how will we find LS's forecasts or Mondy's sat pics, Acottish Skiers pics and reports, NorthernLights practicality and reports.. many more sorry if I missed you out! or just "hae a natter" - at least the stuff posted in here is mostly more relevant to Scotland - I have to say that last time I took to reading the General thread (think it was last year or even the year before that) it landed up being the same few posters with IMBY moans ALL the time, so much so that I think it became a self fulfulling prophecy, the more these particular people posted the less everyone else did, which only left the "dry" model thread  Now that's a very good idea, our weather is different regardless of Winter or Summer or the Winter/Spring/Spring/Autumn.. whatever - Surely there has been enough said politely or otherwise about the S/SE/S central bias of the other threads to at least warrant somewhere we can post our charts and discuss them, how else are we to learn to apply local knowledge to them and have some banter fun at the same time? ditto again  It's been a blast, literally as well as figuratively hope to chat with you all again soon, I'm one of those that will go quiet again now, since I joined I think more than half my posts have been in this thread (or the series of them) - but I may well be lurking .. and last but not least, one final report... No snow, a little hail earlier - temps dipped below freezing between 6 and 8pm but have since increased to +1 DP 0 - Not expecting much at all, but who knows.. maybe c ya all sooner rather than later TTFN
  12. ROFL aww Catch.. OK going for the wine, then the MO thread, charts are dodgy on NW so quickest way to get the "drift" (pun intended) is to go in.. back in a bit
  13. Have my hard hat on because 1. It's hailing outside! and I have to take the dog for a walk and 2. I'm going to try and brave the MO thread after that what's happened to your "band of whatever" Catch? I thought it heading your way nicely earlier on...
  14. the temps are increasing again here this afternoon, affecting even further inland this time - these SE winds methinks +3.6 DP +2 (both highs of the day as of just now) - must be going to be a sharp cool down of the METO Ice warnings are to verify? finally got Oil today and now have central heating yay.. the gutters are thawing nice and slowly, and so far so good!
  15. I believe they did in a fashion, A PR exercise, just in time for them to hold their heads high at the inquisition? http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/1554499?UserKey=
  16. Very Steady drip drip keeping up here too.. temp currently +3.4C up from a low of +2.5 overnight. btw.. Happy Birthday Pete!
  17. is that pic of you Monds? currently +3 DP +1 Snow shifting but slowly, and I have to say I'd rather it happened this way.. Was at school today as parent helper - kids have three outdoor days planned and were supposed to go to the forest today however we stayed in the playing field and built igloos instead Snow started off too powdery but by 11am it was perfect so the school is now the proud owner of 5 igloos and a snow hole came home and widened the driveway by 2ft on either side, can now get the two cars in.. I'm pooped again, but I find it easier to remove the ice edges a bit at a time and the more days we get like this the less problems with the ice pack we'll have. Still just crossing fingers as far as the roof/guttering is concerned the icicles are now "thaw dripping" nicely (rather than freeze dripping), A few friends are reporting water coming into the house as there is nowhere else for it to go, so hence the crossed fingers here. Have enjoyed this spell immensely and there is still plenty going around - more than we have sledged on before - I presume the sledging park will still be fine for a good long while yet we were even skiing on it on Saturday! watching the charts and models this spell has been fascinating, and great to be able to come in here a talk about the Scottish perspective on them, yes I see the Model Output thread has returned to the S/SE/SW England thread Here in East Scotland (sorry CMD) we are looking to remain in the cooler continental feed for a wee while so if the block remains there is possibly the possibility of a more normal reload, winter is not over, not in Scotland anyway - added sorry I see from the latest charts the west is also included in the cooler continental pull now too - this is as opposed to the mild atlantic pull I think?
  18. Morning all, well what on earth happened ?? snow all around us during the night, or flurries, but none here, now it's foggy (or haar?) - looking at the cameras, nowhere else around us seems to be affected - is this like what you guys further south had yesterday and if so will it lift. our temps actually went positive 0.5 around midnight and icicles (I don't think I've ever seen huge icicles on houses!) have been steadily dripping, temps have been steadily dropping since midnight and now stand at -1.8c DP -2 not complaining, except sisters family coming for sleepover today/night purely to witness the sights, she's bringing her camera specially (better Am Tog than I) and now we've lost the view! Any views on what to expect later or is just nowcasting as ever
  19. taking a break from radar watching this evening, so this is mega off topic request but I'll say the temps here are -0.6c DP -1 sp just right for mkore of the white stuff it appears we are right in the gap for now which appears to be closing? anyway my request is for some of you Gaelic speakers.. can you translate this for me, or is just a place name? TIA
  20. morning all, positively basking here compared to most -1c got some more snow going on from time to time as well, the blobs are pretty much dying just as they hit us now already done an hours clearing today, off to the village to help the communal effort now.. before the freeze
  21. me too! I tried, I really did but it's like Scottish Skier the minute I took my eyes of the radar and ..well... tried to do anything else.... IT snowed AGAIN! I'm now hoping by posting that it stops - (I think Freud would be proud?) I spoke to my sister, I did some family history stuff, I tried to quote a job, I answered some emails, then I needed to take the dog for a walk.. that was at 11:30pm  upshot is those little blobs did reach us, I tried to take some photos in night light, I've been walking around like a daftie in the moonlight with camera (and dog for the excuse) - but I have cleared another few cm's of snow.. have snow shovel will travel it's about 50cm+ here now too, not bragging just reporting honest.. even DH's brothers don't believe him and they lived here up until 20 years ago! So the photos are for them!!this really is getting insane - nowhere left to put the snow..
  22. brrrr our temps on the fall again, only to -3c though, the blob bypassed us this time (can't say I'm not happy actually) - though unfortunately it doesn't seem to want to go much further south either, sorry SL2 off to bed, or to check some emails or something, anything but snow for a wee while anyway
  23. sure I'll wrap the next one in bubblewrap to preserve it and send it your way, then you can have fun popping the bubbles while frolicking in snow too
  24. I knew it was close as our temp has risen from -3 to -2, it may just skiff past me here on the northerly, I'll let you know - a few more do seem to be popping up and these teeny blobs are deceiving - we don't get "streamers" here but those blobs can be lethal CMD that's Baltic! :D at least while it's snowing it's not so cold (our heating is on the fritz again, so snow is at least helping keep us warm)
